Well I made an interesting discovery. When AMD extended x86 to "64 bit" they only extended it to 48 bit Virtual, no more, no less. It appears that although the virtual bits are set in stone, manufacturers keep fiddling around with physical. By having fewer address lines, they save considerably on the memory controller and interface. The drawback is limited memory - 36 bits comes out to 64GiB, while 40 bits comes out to 1TiB. The good news is, everything should be compatible, and once 48 or even a full 64 bits of address lines becomes necessary, they can make processors with it that are 100% compatible. AMD even made sure to require the unused bits to be set a certain way, so nobody tries ugly tricks with them that would break compatibility.
