...why don't you just replace the wire?
You're talking about someone who makes personal blog-style post
dammit you guys make me regret not having a good digital camera so that i can take pictures of my adorable cats
now that's my kinda thread anyway computers: I installed 8 on my sis' pc because her XP kept eating the wifi card's driver it works beautifully on a computer that wouldn't even start the win7 install and had trouble running xp the fuck
I thought 8 was more resource consuming, and generally less optimized, as it's a release preview?
Even just strip them back a bit, twist them together and tape it up. It's ghetto but it'll hard. Also don't assume everyone has a solder, it seems everyone in H&S assumes that.
Doesn't cost more than a few quid to get a basic soldering kit together good enough for simple cable repairs like this. You aren't going to be fixing SMD capacitors on graphics cards with it but for this sort of stuff it will do. It's a basic tool for any tool box as far as I am concerned, on par with a roll of gaffa tape or a torx driver.
You aren't going to be fixing SMD capacitors on graphics cards with it
You'd be suprised
I've seen SMD work being done with those. You just need a really good tip and a voltage regulator.
Gaben apparently hates Windows 8 My feelings feel justified

[editline]1st August 2012[/editline]
I've seen SMD work being done with those. You just need a really good tip and a voltage regulator.
what?
I just read the news about the Nexus Q preorderers getting a free device because Google delayed the release. WHY DID I CANCEL MY PREORDER LAST WEEK WHY
Mains soldering irons are bad, at least get one that has temperature control.
Yes, They are, If you are doing anything remotely intricate. I have a Hakko station myself. If you have the funds then get one. Those thermally balanced mains irons are perfectly fine for cable repair however (Which is why I have one in my emergency repair kit, along with a butane powered iron.). Temperature controlled irons are overkill for tinning leads.
I've almost nailed my Bane impression. http://puu.sh/NsRa
I've almost nailed my Bane impression. http://puu.sh/NsRa
You nailed it
Fucking shit. My province is making some "environmental handling fee" for hardware and stuff starting tomorrow. brb moving to Saskatchewan or Alberta
Fucking shit. My province is making some "environmental handling fee" for hardware and stuff starting tomorrow. brb moving to Saskatchewan or Alberta
It's not too bad, at when building a computer it's only a few bucks. HST is really annoying, it turns an $800 computer into a $904 computer
I've almost nailed my Bane impression. http://puu.sh/NsRa
Sorta sounds like Deckard Cain?

[editline]1st August 2012[/editline]
At first glance I thought that picture depicted wires partially embedded in skin or something like that
Thats my desk :(
Thats my desk :(
I figured after I realized a kitten probably wouldn't drive headphones through your back so that only the wires would show
oh man I guess I'll have to get a gigabit card if I want to game!!!1 [editline]31st July 2012[/editline]
what?
What do you think the expensive controllable temperature ones use?
giving my 4 year old build some life, Going to contiune on with Asus Rampage, Q6600 @ 3.1ghz and 4870 but SSD with windows 7 and a 1tb WD Black series, Also lol HDD i didn't get anything off cause we sell it for so cheap (we don't make money on it acutally) and enclosure was only like 10 bucks off
I seriously need to upgrade my PC too. Thing is though, i need to sell all this shit so that i can get the money to do it How much do you guys think i can get out of 18 PCs, mostly P4 3GHZ boxes with 2 pentium D boxes and an athlon 64 X2 rig? The RAM they have is either 1 or 2GB and the HDDs are either 80 or 160GB

Man. I wasn't able to get a screenshot of the CPU's turboing to 3.3ghz simulating our work load. But I guess 3.2ghz would do. How come I never knew about http://what-if.xkcd.com/? It's brilliant
Today's is much less science-y but still funny. The baseball one remains my favorite.

Oh hey, I finally found a game I can't max-out on this laptop. Crysis it can handle, Skyrim is a breeze, and I haven't tried any other "serious" games. Minecraft + Optifine, near-max settings (4x aniso + 4x AA are the only exceptions) + Sonic's shaders (Ultra + motion blur + DoF) Gives me 10-20FPS. Although it crashes after 10 minutes or so, since I haven't gotten around to installing a 64-bit JVM yet. And I'm actually going to uninstall the current shaders to get rid of the DoF, as that's more annoying than good, honestly. We'll see how that goes.
