I haven't done any benchmarks but on my laptop performance versus win7 is very noticeable. You know ms has taken performance seriously when they put processor features as requirements. Performance is better than win7 and faster than a windows server 2008 r2 fresh install (which I installed so I could burn the win8 dvd).
Though my win7 install was filled with all sorts of crapware, and the windows server one didn't have drivers. What certainly is good about win8 is that my laptops fan speed can barely be heard anymore. So that's cool.
Edit: And I can barely see the light of my HDD anymore but this could be because it's a fresh install but I'm not sure yet.
