IN MY OPINION if you have the money for a GTX 295, it is worth it. The performance is great. Go for it.
IN YOUR OPINION the GTX 295's price does not justify its performance gain.

Let's say the 4870 X2 costs $380, as the $350 one on Newegg is just for this weekend.
Let's call the GTX 295 $510, since the cheapest ones on Newegg are that much without shipping.
The GTX 295 thus costs 34% more than the 4870 X2.
In WaW at 1920x1200, the 4870 X2 averages 105.8 FPS while the 295 averages 110.5.
4% performance increase.
In Crysis at 1920x1200, the 4870 X2 pulls 31.5 FPS to the 295's 29.6.
6% performance decrease.
For Far Cry 2, the 4870 X2 is getting 77.3 FPS and the 295 is getting 86.9.
12% performance increase.
In Left 4 Dead, the 4870 X2 is running at an average of 123.5 FPS to the 295's 147.5.
19% performance increase.
In World In Conflict, the 295 has a 7 FPS lead on the 4870 X2's 61 with an average FPS of 68.
11% performance increase.
This is all for a 34% price increase. If we wanted to compare the price of the GTX 295 w/ shipping to the price of that 4870 X2 special, we have a 49% price increase for the 295.
You do the math.

Heh, I started working on my post before I saw that.
Great minds think alike!
The way that you're gathering data is awful. Dollar =/= FPS. You can't compare percentages of two different things. To prove this, do the same comparison on lower end cards like a 4870 and such and you'll start getting some fucked up numbers.
Obviously, money doesn't matter to you.
I predict you being up to your eyeballs in debt by 30.
However, I like to think carefully about my money.
If I was looking at those two graphics cards, I'd also be looking at my wallet.

Money does matter very much to me. I guess that's why I only buy computer parts that I actually have the cash for. :downs:
I was looking at my wallet. Do you know how much this GTX 295 cost me? $145.
Finally found somewhere that's gonna hire me. Now I may apply for a loan! |3
I've narrowed it down to a couple cars.
A 2007 MazdaSpeed 6:

Or a 1999 BMW M3

I unno. The Mazda would be a lot more fun, but I could pay off the BMW a lot sooner. Thoughts?
This appears to be the Mazda you're looking at:
http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=3&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-|E-|M-_30_|D-_7751_|N-N|R-10000|I-1%2c7|P-PRICE+descending|Q-descending|Z-13326&aff=national&paId=310255524&recnum=186&leadExists=true
Looking on the dealer's site, the BMW is $10,000 OBO.
Looking at the KBB site, the suggested retail value for the Mazda is at least $20,000.
Insurance on either of those cars for a high-schooler who's already totaled one car must cost out the ass. Either of those cars would be a horrid choice financially for someone with a minimum wage (or low-wage) job who also has to think about college.
Obviously, you're not as awesome with money as you wish you were.
What do I drive?
Pretty much this, just not my picture:

I pay less than $500 a year for insurance, and it's a hand-me-down from my parents, so I'm not worried about payments. Sure, it doesn't go fast, and it doesn't look as pimp as either of those cars, but it gets me where I need to go.
just because you got a card for 165 does not mean the OP is getting it for that price
Wow sure is dumb around here
You obviously don't understand what I'm saying. Let's take the 4870 and the GTX 285 for example. The 285 is over double the price of the 4870, yet most of the time it doesn't come close to throwing up double the framerate. That is an irrelevant comparison. Or even a 4870 and a 4870X2/4870's in crossfire. Double up on 4870's, double up on price, don't come close to doubling up on framerate. That is a very inaccurate comparison to make. By that logic, you shouldn't be getting a GTX 295 or a 4870X2, or anything but the shittiest of cards because the price percentage increase isn't worth the framerate percentage increase.
1. Okay as you can see that wasn't me, so you were saying you would "digg up dirt on me" for no reason
2. see one
No, I was talking straight to Prismate in that respect. You too are straddling that line between insulting me personally and trying to offer help.
GTX 260 is the counterpart to the 4870
Nvidia's highest vs ati highest is a fair deal

So? Get over yourself. I have a job that will provide more than ample payments. If you must know, the M3 is $7,000 and the MS6 is $13,000. I don't just go out and buy one for $20K because that's what it says on KBB. :downs: I actually look for deals because I am good at managing money. I can get a 60 month loan on the MS6, make a down payment of $1K plus trade in and old hand-me-down Explorer for 3K, bringing my payments down to like $140 a month even on the more expensive car. That is way more than manageable on my paycheck.

so does anyone remember what this thread is about?
I kid, I kid
anyway I'd go with the 4870x2
Yeah, it is good quality and powerful. Value for money.
i personally would rather get a gtx 295 if i had the cash, since it gives higher lowest framerates than the 4870x2 meaning it wouldn't dip down as much
yeah, i think i get the HD4870X2, and nevermind that post about brands, cause ive found it like $110 cheaper in another shop, and there they only have sapphire
you missed the total and utter shitstorm. if i had to choose it would be HIS or Sapphire
How powerfull PSU do you need for HD4870X2?
Dual GPUs, like the 4870 x2?

Lol, I have never overclocked and I'm kinda scared of it for some reason
