if you like the mac feel so much you can just put an install of darwin or some linux variety on there and theme it so it's like OSX instead of spending oh say 3x the amount you need to

we're telling him that a mac is not the best computer for him since he's not going to use the exclusive software o mister registered today and this is your first post so you're probably an alt

Probably. And still, he has his eyes set on a mac, he never asked if he should get a mac, he asked if crossover games works well with his games.

roughly equivilant to the computer i'm using (phenom II @ 3.2 ghz x4 cores, 4gb ram ati 6650) which i made for 600-700

exactly equivilant to a mac pro (except 1 gb more of ram)

the reason i'm debating so fervently is because their proprietary bullshit hipster business model pisses me off
Austin2 how much money could you spend

PSU and 1 more gb of ram aside yes it is
that's a 5770
that's 2.8 ghz of cpu power (sandy bridge instead of xeon but xeons are overpriced as fuck)
[editline]9th July 2011[/editline]
that's also quad core

i swear ifaux is gonna be the doug of h&s
from what i understand OP thinks it's too hard to make a computer so he wants a prebuilt mac because he likes the style.
in that case it would be much cheaper to buy a decent $400 pre built computer and get a OSX theme on it with Windows.
... or he could do research on computer building and realize that it isn't that hard and 10 year olds can build computers with no problems

'hurf durf clocks are the only indicator of a CPU's power'

yes i know there's cache size and such too but the clock is the biggest indicator
Holy shit no wonder that fucking Mac Pro has that price tag, I checked the price for the CPU on Newegg.
1,229.99USD
[editline]10th July 2011[/editline]
Here's a literally equivelant build.
In case you're wondering, it throws in that McAfee automatically and I couldn't be arsed to remove it.

why the fuck would you get a xeon for gaming
I can't do that cause my town sucks.
Craigslist? Just go to Craigslist > Services > Computer Services.. Trust me, you'll find someone to build you a computer.
[editline]9th July 2011[/editline]
PS You're a dumbass if you buy the Mac and intend to game.
As soon as I saw Mac in the thread title I knew this would be the staging ground for the monthly H&S Mac vs PC crusade.

ftfy
The title is annoying as hell, it isn't "is"...
I remember building my first PC. I was so afraid at firs that I would break a piece and end up having to buy the part again, but honestly, if you don't spasm every ten seconds you will be fine. Just watch some YouTube videos to get an idea for it, and after that we can whip up a parts list and have it shipped to you. In addition, you will be able to tell people that you are smart with your money and can build a computer. I say that I can build a computer with pride every time.
What is the point of getting a Mac for gaming? You gonna end up spending a lot more money on it and for what? Windows has the same features as a mac and they usually a lot cheaper than a Mac.

you're paying 1500$ for a brand name

Considering you think a Phenom is roughly equivalent to a Xeon I don't think you should really make comments about the price of a Mac.
Considering you think a Phenom is roughly equivalent to a Xeon I don't think you should really make comments about the price of a Mac.
OP doesn't need a Xeon, though.
I'm not saying he does, I myself suggested he should just get a high spec iMac. But in the case of the Mac Pro it isn't a $1500 brand name charge. The equivalent components that you put together run to $1800 roughly as you showed. Apple's profit margins are well known to be 30%. 1800*1.3 = 2340. Given Apple's penchant for nice round numbers I'm guessing they simply rounded up the price to $2499 and pocketed the extra $150.

it really is pretty similar, i think the xeon has the bigger cache out of the two though
it really is pretty similar, i think the xeon has the bigger cache out of the two though
You should stop arguing about CPUs, because Dr. Egg is apparently more knowledged than you, in this case. No offense, but a Phenom comes nowhere near a 5*** xeon, both in price and performance.
