I doubt that this is the cause, but sometimes my system does this if I have a CD in the drive or a USB storage device plugged in when I boot up. I'm pretty sure it does that because it gets stuck when checking to see if the external storage device is bootable. Try unplugging all of your USB devices, removing all external storage, and starting up. Alternatively, double check your BIOS and make sure your HDD is set to the primary boot device.
Sonicfan574, did my solution work?
The only things I have plugged in are a USB mouse and the laptop's charger. I've tried booting with both of them unplugged. Same shit.
Do you have any other computers you could use to make a live CD for a Linux distro? That might help in terms of backing up. You could use it to put some files onto a flash drive or something.
