There are better ways.
1: Right click, View -> Show Desktop Icons. Makes sure that if things add to it, the desktop isn't messed up.
2: Install Fences. That way he can keep the icons and toggle them off and on just by double clicking his wallpaper.

besides, some of those things on his desktop look like actual files and not just shortcuts. we don't want to delete those unless he's done with them

I'm sorry but how is that even relevant? You're comparing a very dirty and trash filled room with a desktop (that isn't even 1/2 filled) of functioning utilities and games?
Firstly your point is invalid because a room filled with trash is caused by laziness. His desktop has icons on it which he's clearly grouped in ways that he's familiar with ergo he's put effort into sorting them in a way he likes and is familiar with.
Secondly you're telling him to delete the icons on his desktop, why? The only reason I can think is because you personally don't like them, which frankly shouldn't even matter to you because it's not the screen you look at every day.
Just because you don't share somebody else's preferences doesn't automatically make them messy or bad.
If it works for him, why bother talking about it at all really?
So, I tried to do a new colour scheme and ended up doing the same as I do every other time. I realise that the systray icons are dark and that annoys me too, but I don't want to change my icon theme.
