How did harddrives get so expensive all of a sudden?

Why does Thailand produce the majority of harddrives in the first place? If its cause of cheap labor why not China or India?

I suspects it's cause they still want a little bit of quality in the product.
But seriously,
maybe all the resources they need are already in Thailand? Thus cutting down on import costs.
Just a guess...
Heh, good thing I have a spare laptop hard drive lying around
don't expect prices to come back down for a long time
like a year+

your username does not fit
No, it decreased the supply, not the demand. Demand is still the same, just not enough supply anymore.
But, wouldn't the demand go up as the supply cant supply the demand?
If people believed there would be no increase in supply for a while, that might cause an increase in demand as people tried to stock up before the supply runs out.
However, as demand increases or supply decreases, or both, prices will rise. The higher prices tend to keep demand down, since lots of buyers will hesitate to pay the higher prices.
Hey it's just what I heard I'm not claiming it to be true holy shit people calm down

Pfa. Somebody linked me an HDD that quadrupled in price recently.
No, really.
Hmm Thailand you say? I thought it had something to do with how we are running outta rare earth metals or something.
Pardon my stupidity.
We throw those away at work. heh
I've got 3 of them. Don't know what to do with them.
Probably go with my 10 IDE optical drives.
So glad I just got my 2TB for under $80.

Take them apart and sell the magnets to some kids.
How much?
It would probably cost alot to ship the drive to the US
Pepper;33243888']It would probably cost alot to ship the drive to the US
True, But if it dosen't have to cost me $120 for a 500gb I would love it.

Sell the magnets to the Juggalo Science Group. Breakthroughs in how they work would be a miracle in this day and age.
Best Buy just pulled a total bait and switch, they put out ads today advertising Seagate 1tb internals for $55. Turns out none of the stores have them and the website refuses to ship them.
I thought that kind of shit was illegal, like if you advertise something you need to have enough stock for people to reasonably buy it. The guy at the store even said "We didn't have many to begin with..." while he tried to upsell me on something $50 more expensive.
natural disasters are illegal
somebody sue them

How is that bait and switch? They advertised something, they didn't have enough and made it instore only.
They don't have to guarantee anything.

Just like how people bought those giant TVs for like a penny. As long as they refund your money, they don't have to give you jack.
You would have a point, if they jacked the price AFTER the transaction was made (which I'm sure IS illegal).

That must be the textbook definition, then. I figured "bait and switch" encompassed any scenario where they advertise something, you show up to the store, and are told for various reasons they can't meet what was promised in their advertisements. Usually followed by an attempted upsell to more expensive inventory.
Gonna be a long time before I can buy a decent hard drive for $50 again.

Sort of like "Big screen TV for $20[SUP]*[/SUP]!"
[SUB]*in 24 monthly payments[/SUB]
Well hopefully they will be making the factories capable of making the new drives salt based and we should see 8TB drives a reality withing the next 2-3 years
