It will be obsolete soon, like any laptop, except you just spend more money on it.
Also excepting a laptop not being obsolete over 3 years is damn stupid
-Damn automerge-
It's not like a desktop is any different. My old desktop was hot shit back in 2008 but it's not nearly as impressive now.
"Obsolete" doesn't mean "won't run Crysis 3/Metro 2035/Battlefield 4 all max settings 60 fps". Obsolete means it doesn't have the relative horsepower to run the programs I need it to run. What I care about is that runs what I need it to run now but has enough in it that it will run what I need to run in the future.
Besides, if higher-tier laptops are so bad then why do you imply you have one?
If you're just taking in account pure performance between these two cards, the GTX460M is obviously more powerful. But its purpose is mainly for 1080p gaming (if you're willing to take an "17 and lose then more mobility because of its size/weight), while a GT540M can run everything fine on 720p
I have a GT540M and it runs every game (even Metro 2033 on Dx9/Mid settings/1366x768) pretty good.
I bought (and I'm sure this is why the OP is looking for one) a higher-tier notebook because the hardware in it will remain relevant further into the future.
Besides, it's easy enough to put in a newer, larger hard drive or more RAM if you require it. It's not as easy to replace a notebook video card; you might as well get the best while you can now because you're unlikely to get a better one.
ADT is rating you dumb because he's a shit poster. I come in here asking for advice on a good deal for a laptop that I'm getting for free and all he does is blab about the desktop master race.
lol you don't know me enough boy
I am currently using a ASUS N53SV laptop (because I couldn't buy a desktop for pratical reasons) except I just didn't spend a shitload of money to have something that can run any task (games as a bonus).

You're still trying to justify the price of your "gaming" laptop by excepting to run any kind of program in the future, which is impossible to determine like that, especially on a laptop (since you can't really upgrade components, except HDD/RAM)
Um, why did you rate me dumb? I'm dying to know why.
-Gaming laptop
-1080p screen on a 15.6" laptop
-Still a 5400rpm HDD at this price
damn son
You're probably not gonna be able to find a laptop with a 560M and a 7200 RPM HDD for $1000. Maybe a 550M, but the 560M is at least 50% better than it.
I would choose the lesser of the two evils though and get a computer with a better graphics card.
I might see what I can find.
[editline]19th October 2011[/editline]
If you're willing to go an extra 70 bucks, you can get the upgraded version of what I suggested above. It's got 12 GB RAM and a 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD.
If anyone can find anything that tops what I have down here, please say so.

Hmmm I wish the xr1 model had 7200rpm with a smaller harddrive... I might just get the xr1 and get a ssd for Christmas.
I'll see what my dad thinks.
Also someone mentioned the gfx card was gimped in the g53sx model because of the bus pin count or something... They said the g53sw gfx card was better in this case.
Thank you so much for your help!

It is gimped.

I heard they suggest the G53SW range instead. This computer uses a a 460M instead of a 560M but I hear it's still better than the G53SX's 560M.
http://www.excaliberpc.com/603725/asus-g53sw-a1-15.6-notebook.html
Here's what the 460M and (normal non-fucked up ASUS version) 560M are capable of:
460M - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-460M.33612.0.html
560M - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-560M.48313.0.html
Looked up all the laptops on Newegg, and then tried to find the cheapest prices of each of them from other sites. The G53SW is really holding up so far. I will do the same with TigerDirect, then do a Google search and tell you how everything goes.
Cool I guess I'll go with the g35sw-a1 model then.
Cool I guess I'll go with the g35sw-a1 model then.
Alright the G53SW-A1 is the best model I can find. Go get it. Make sure that site's shipping is free too.
I just gotta do a Google search on 460M and see if I can find anything better. Already checked Newegg and TigerDirect's laptop models. It's still the best one so far.

Thanks, you're the man!
Damn it, now I'm hearing that the gimped 560M is still better than the 460M. It's quite the debate.
fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck i am so fucking confused now
How about you decide whether you want the G53SX-XR1 or the G53SW-A1, do some more research, and save me the guilt of possibly recommending an inferior product.

Now I feel bad :(
Haha no harm done I haven't ordered yet. :)
Thank you for all your help. You've really gone the extra mile to help me out and I appreciate that a lot
Post here. This is the ASUS forums. See what they can do. This debate is just too stressful for me, and it seems like they're both the same.

This wouldn't be too bad. I also like the design of it.

That is the EXACT same thing I already suggested, only with a bigger screen and hard drive (same speed). Here's mine.

My Apoligizes, I did not see that.
Then again you might not when you've been up all night and it's 5 in the morning.

Except having a better HDD let you to access at your files faster and also avoid some short saccades in games.
also I'm still ashamed by the fact you guys are recommending gaming laptops (except the first posts which seemed to be more reasonable). Looks like the HW section had gone downhill recently
Also, would be nice from OP to not spend all of his father's money for a "gaming" laptop
-automerge broken?-

He offered me a MacBook air... Which I do not want because I heavily program and use cad and 3d modeling software. Im not picking out a $2000 equivalent. It's none of your business anyways
Alright, I have done the research, and I say the G53SW-A1 wins.
It only took me a day to figure this out too!
Yeah that is my conclusion too!
The websites "free shipping" is $60 to Alaska though

Dare to compare. Type in the zip code the package is getting sent to and sort them out by lowest total price.

Sweet. I showed my dad and he said he'd buy it. He's more the causal computing type for home use (he just bought an ipad 2), but he admires the power of this laptop as he uses CAD software a lot (he's an engineer) and he used to be a hardcore arcade/pc gamer before I was born. I remember the days when he would take me to the computing lab on campus and play Doom and Quake with me. It seems like I've grown up so fast. :/ Anyways it's late and I'm rambling. I'm gonna get some shut eye.
While I was looking for newer drivers on the Ausu forum (I hate bloatware and partitioning, so I'm gonna do a fresh install of windows 7 as soon as I get it), I saw you even made a post regarding my laptop. <3 Seriously, you've been the most helpful person I've ever met on the internet. You've helped me make one of the biggest decisions I've had to make in my young adult life. Thank you!
