I only trust furmark torture tests for temps.
because everyone is running stress tests all day. think about others [editline]08:20PM[/editline]
I'm a little worried about the heat though, my room can get pretty hot and I'm very paranoid when it comes to my computer. I can't overclock due to being scared that I'll get worse performance after I finish overclocking than when I started, and if the nVidia is running up in the 80's-90's I might start feeling as though It's eating itself to death. :tinfoil:
if you don't want to overclock, don't. You're missing out though, and there isn't really a risk. The only card I know of that can be damaged by OCing is the 8800 GT, which if you push over 1000MHz memory it will crap out eventually. My card doesn't go over 80c with a 750Mhz core clock (much more from the stock 600.)
It's not worth the understatement of it's better because of DirectX 11. Not many games use it and when Nvidia performs better, the margin is very small. You're missing the fact that the fermi use twice the amount of power and do generally run warmer with a larger heat output. [editline]05:18PM[/editline]
haha what nowai does the 4870 x2 beat the other cards more like 4890?
dx9. [editline]05:18PM[/editline]
the 4870 x2 2gb beats the 5970 2gb? That makes no sense, how does that happen?
dx9.
oh thanks for clearing that up Are you a gamer? If so, get a 470 Are you a 3d designer? If so, get a 470
This is completely wrong.
prove me wrong [editline]06:53PM[/editline] I don't think so Tim
get the gtx470 it do better in dicks 11
470 is nicely priced for what you get. 480, ehh...not so much.
prove me wrong [editline]06:53PM[/editline] I don't think so Tim
That's more like it. And as you can see, after the GTX 470 is subjected to 100% activity for a while, the fan (which was on auto) finally kicks in and drops the temperature to 72C. What all of these websites are showing are absolute maximum temperatures, which don't matter if you're going to increase the fan manually anyway (which is basically what auto fan did in that Furmark picture. It rose up to around 60% I believe.)
high five very nice
"fermi runs hot" jokes aren't funny anymore. They're just as funny as all of the old and overused 4chan memes. stop posting them, or get out edit: OP, the 470 can beat the 5870 in DX11 sometimes, which may or may not be important to you. You can't go wrong with a 470, since it is between a 5850 and 5870 (price and performance wise). They overclock quite far which might even put it ahead of a stock 5870 in some DX10 games. you can't go wrong with the 5870, or the 470. If you can't get the 5870, but can afford the 470, get the 470. If you can afford the 5850, but not the 470 (its only 50 bucks more, but hey..)
So they don't overheat like hell? Because that's what I've heard :v:
Get the GTX 470
If you like to do folding@home go for the gtx 470.
So they don't overheat like hell? Because that's what I've heard :v:
no also @ above, GPU3 isn't out yet, sadly
So they don't overheat like hell? Because that's what I've heard :v:
No, they don't.
That's more like it.
The numbers on the graph still follow a similar range. The 5850 is the coolest, the 480 is the hottest (not talking about the other cards/sli/crossfire, only 5850/5870/470/480).
Yeah but this graph isn't off by 27C.
True, it probably wasn't the best choice. The ratio of the temperature remains the same.
True, it probably wasn't the best choice. The ratio of the temperature remains the same.
No it doesn't, the 5850 and 5870 gained ~27C while the 470 and 480 remained basically the same.
Seems like most people are looking towards the 470 on this one, I'll clear a couple of things up: My computer is on all day whether I'm using it or not. I'll definitely get a lot of use out of the card ( 6-8 hours a day ). At the minute I have: 8800gts 320mb. E8200 @ Stock clock. 650w Coolermaster Power supply. I'll be running games at 1680x1050. Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L motherboard. Linky here ( http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2615&ProductName=GA-P31-DS3L ) My motherboard only supports PCI-E x16 but I am told that even though the card is PCI-E 2.0, it should fit and the performance should be incredibly minor. Apart from that, if the price of the 470 drops below or the same as the 5870 I'll get the 470. Although it does seem odd that for the past few months facepunch has been sleeping with the 58XX and now I'm told to get the 470, but they've just released.
All cards you get will be bottlenecked by that processor. Overclocking it would help a lot... PSU is fine for all cards. i don't think any of those cards would really use more than a 8x (16x pci-e 1.0) but I may be wrong, if I am, the difference will probably be minimal
With that being said I'll see if the price comes down on the 470, if not, I'll get the 5870.
So they don't overheat like hell? Because that's what I've heard :v:
They're made to run hot.
I'd still rather have the cooler one, for piece of mind.
I'd still rather have the cooler one, for piece of mind.
The 5870 gets to around 80 C occasionally and is only made to withstand around 90C however the GTX 470 and 480 have been seen as high (Under damage testing) as 115C with no damage. Personally I would rather have the card that stays the furthest away from its damage threshold.
Heat doesnt matter, the 5xxx are designed to be cool, but not resist heat, 4xx are designed to resist heat
Heat doesnt matter.
end of argument, don't bother continuing because we will be right back here. tell us what card you get OP, and take some pics when you get it
If it was my choice I'd get the 470. Performance is generally all within the 5 fps ballpark and the 470 is a much more well-rounded player. Don't worry about heat. in fact i think when you get the card you should overclock your old one and see how awesome it is :science:
Oh and, don't fucking leave fan on auto.
Heat is a niace added bonus, but it isn't something serious to consider if you are buying a graphics card. Performance is the only thing you should consider. Also, heat measurements through programs are not entirely accurate.

If you're hitting 80C you either have shitty airflow, or a messed up heatsink on your GPU. Or even both.
