• GTX 470 or 5850/5870?
The 470 is a monster. People might complain that it runs hot but in reality if it does it might only be a few degrees. The card runs just fine and it all really depends on how well ventilated your case is. Remember that GPU peak temperatures can be much higher than other components in the computer. I'd go for the 470, even though the 5870 is pretty similarly priced (depends on where and when you buy it) the card has a few bonuses.
If you have decent airflow the heat isn't even a variable. [editline]07:38PM[/editline]
Ahaha, that's a silly argument. If it does that, are all your components 1C from melting and your case a steel box?
No, it makes sense. Say you got crap airflow and a GTX 470 underload. That would make your CPU run hotter also. [editline]07:39PM[/editline] And all your shit will shut off before it even comes close to melting.
...The hot air from a GPU is exhausted out the back of the case for a reason
Someone should do something about that... like make the vents at the front between the VGA adapters n shit
silicon melts at what, 130-150C?
silicon melts at what, 130-150C?
Really? Thats not good
Yeh but a gpu wont get anywhere near that
Yeh but a gpu wont get anywhere near that
It could... it could. [editline]09:22PM[/editline] But you'd have to be a retard to let that happen, like destroy the fan or take off the heasink....
Yeh if you lived in a sauna [editline]09:22PM[/editline] But you would have others things to worry about...
Yeh if you lived in a sauna [editline]09:22PM[/editline] But you would have others things to worry about...
I think you would have more of a problem with moisture before heat in a sauna.
Exactly And the fact you are living in a sauna.

[editline]09:00PM[/editline] JUST a little fact, we are not running Pentium 4s. New computer parts actually have sensors and tell the chip to shut down should it reach a certain temperature. [editline]09:00PM[/editline] hope i am informative

But of course when is that going to happen.
+ warranty? edit even before it shuts down from overheat, it'll crash/slow down/error out because it is running too hot.
I wonder how long it will be before the argument that fermi will double your electric bill and start turning your case into plasma will die out? I mean, granted you put it in a gaming comp, especially one built from advice here, it will have adequate airflow and a good psu, thus pleasing the fermi gods once and for all.
You'll be seeing artifacts way before anything bad happens.

[editline]10:43PM[/editline] just adding on/expanding

just guessed, power bills here haven't changed since the "oil crisis" in the US
now you're just being complicated/difficult.
This is why he is on my ignore list :)
out of sight out of mind.. no problem

He's said his house is rather old, so it doesn't have AC. That will certainly contribute to heating up his PC.
If you have the space/slots/power to handle it, Crossfire'd 5830s outperform all three cards you mentioned.
Get the 470 if you have a nuclear reactor for a power core and want a blast furnace for a computer (User was banned for this post ("This doesnt help" - birkett))
derr derr derr
translated from /g/imp into regular english
just report him.
but why do just that when I can have the best of both worlds?
And i'm guessing he lives with his mum? Almost spelt it mom Silly me :arghfist:
Are my current on-load temperatures, CPU gets to around 47-50 at times.
And i'm guessing he lives with his mum? Almost spelt it mom Silly me :arghfist:
I have no plans to move out until I finish College and university.
He's said his house is rather old, so it doesn't have AC.

And what gpu is that
