And what gpu is that
8800GTS, had it since release a few years back.
The flaming symbol always makes me slightly worried it's going to set on fire.
older cards are known to run hot
Just found http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-135-OK on overclockers, 470 for 280 pounds isn't to bad, although it is a value card.
If it stays the same price I'll get that instead.
I am still a little bit worried regarding the temperatures, mainly concerning piece of mind. But if it's designed to run hot, run hot it shall.
After another look I've also found http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-223-AS for 20 pounds more, but it's Asus and has a three year warranty rather than a two year warranty. So I might be better off getting that instead of the value one.

you're in the UK, don't bother with the 470 unless they sort the prices out
if you're going to spend £300 then get a 5870
ignore the americans presuming their prices are the same everywhere
[editline]12:35PM[/editline]
oh and the flame symbol is just speedfan being dumb, it's meant to show it's warm not it's on fire
use HWMonitor instead
I'll be getting it in around 11 days now, so I'll wait until the day comes to make a choice. Prices change around and if there isn't the card I want in-stock I'll probably go with another rather than waiting.
GET A 470
Dont listen to them mate

what part of NON-US PRICES FOR 470S AND 480S ARE MESSED UP is so hard for people to understand
[editline]01:19PM[/editline]
next you'll be telling him he should have bought a 5830 back when they cost the same/more than 5850s

Why would he?
If you can find a HD5870 for cheaper than a GTX470 then definately go for the ATI. The fact is that in normal gaming the 5870 is faster, quieter and more efficient. Yes the fermi-architecture is advanced and newer than the 5xxx-series but they are overpriced, way too loud(as in you will hear it when you play unless you use headphones). You can clock it 480 speeds, but then noise becomes unbearable (100% fan speed on a stock fan and your ears will bleed :P ).

Remember that the test was done on a game where the fermis should really make a difference(5xxx-series dx11 ain't quite as a good as fermis, mostly tesselation tho) and the 5870 still beats 470. Not to mention that it used less power, produced lot less heat and most importantly was noticeable quieter. Not to mention that it has more oc-capabilities without destroying your ears even.
The way I see it, youve got three choices:
-HD5870 if you want lots of power (you cant go wrong with an Asus, theyre excellent)
-HD5850 if you want good value for money. It even outperforms the 470 on some games and costs almost 100$ less and is extremely quiet and it is easy to oc.
-Wait for GF102-fermis as they should be quieter more efficient etc. or the Ati 6xxx-series.
Personally I would go for the HD5850(as I did ;) ) as it holds the best value for money even tho theyve raised the prices on them. I would recommend ASUS HD5850 for several reasons:
-reference card makes it easy to oc
-SixEngine makes it veryveryvery quiet in normal use(other than gaming).
-Free CMR Dirt2! :D

No, don't wait. You shouldn't keep waiting for stuff if it is more than a month away. Look at all the idiots who waited for the 400 series because they thought it would lower the prices of the 5000 series. Why would ATI lower prices? Their prices are still lower than the 400, and it was quite obvious the 400s were going to be more expensive.
470 is cheaper than the 5870 :(
470 is cheaper than the 5870 :(
by £10-15.

The 5850 does look appealing especially since I've seen a few Vapor-X Overclocked ones going cheaper than the normal ASUS cards.
I'll see what prices are like come June and decide then.

Vapor-X's are great cards, just remember that you wont be able to OC it quite as well as the reference card(thankfully it's already slightly oc'd so)so if you want raise the voltages etc. youre most likely gonna need a reference card. But yeah, Vapor-X is excellent choice.
nevermind
What i thought Vaporx were designed to be OCd
Hence the cooling

uh
isn't the entire point of nearly all cards with non-reference coolers to be more efficient and thus allow you to overclock further

it's not our problem every other country doesn't care about the MSRP.
what do you guys think about getting him to get the 5850 and ocing it?
uh

Well they are,but cos theyre non-reference cards you wont be able to raise the voltages(msi's non-reference cards are an exception) thus reducing the overclocking capabilities which means you can the core clocks to >~1000MHz because the voltages wont cope. If youre looking for a minor performance boost then Vapor-X's cooling does help you.

avatar fits.
edit:
how much more is the vapor-x to the regular ones?
Haha, it really does.
Back on the rails, I dont really think it matters whether you get, whichever you find is cheaper. But Im more inclined towards the 470

Gorgeous PCB

Hopefully that will convince that the 470 way too overpriced for its power.

Ehh...
Not true anymore. current beta drivers make the 480's average FPS 51, its highest 92 and its minimum 30.
I said it once and im saying it again, 4xx cards are better for DX11, 5xxx are better for everything below.

Yeah, the new drivers make the cards much better.
Benchmarks for the new driver: http://forum.amtech.com.vn/overclocking-benchmark/71313-first-review-driver-nvidia-256-76-32bit.html#post689435
Some highlights:
+30FPS (both minimum and average) in Dirt2
For Metro 2033, Avg: 51.226 - Min: 21 - Max: 92 up from Avg: 35.184 - Min: 15 - Max: 49

Yeah the beta drivers do make some games run little bit better (just tested it myself on friends comp) and yes fermi's do have better DX11 capability(mostly tesselashun tho)
but Metro is the only game that really benefits from fermi's and in everything else Ati's take the lead.

the game looks no better with AA on 16 than on 4 (and sometimes even 2). There is no need for that.
Either way, what is their test setup's processor? a pentium 4 or some shit?
this system has no problem here

Um, the settings are different for the 470, a very unfair test
