I'm getting a 3G Ipod Touch 32 gigs as a graduation gift and I need some recommendations for free apps I should put on it.
Seriously, the only app I can think of right now is a twitter app.
And I tried TTR, didn't like it.

[*]Skype is free, you can send messages to friends online (although im+ can do that although what im+ can't do, is call people, which skype can). If you have skype credit you can also phone mobiles and regular phones.

[*]Springpad - General work management and organisational application that syncs to the internet.

You can usually find free copies of applications on the app store, complete with adverts. However most games and apps you will have to pay for.

CookingStar. It's a fun cooking game, obviously. P.S. Don't jailbreak it. The jailbreak app is too hard to work with, and you won't be able to sync up anymore music. I tried to use it for a month, and didn't figure it out.

Just because you don't know how to jailbreak doesn't mean that he should refrain from it. And Cydia is perfectly fine, you go in it, download a package and it installs it at the same time. How is this hard?
Jailbreaking is simple, jailbreak with BlackSn0w (or whatever it's called now) and use Cydia to manage stuff.

You can still sync music, you're an idiot.
I just jailbroke my 3G using redsn0w. Multitasking and all the features I don't get on the 3G are enabled. They work smooth, I don't know why Apple wouldn't allow multi-tasking on the 3G (other than making people upgrade).
But really, Air Mouse is handy for me. It's a remote control and a mouse for PC/Mac. Also:

I recommend you jailbreak to see for yourself what it's like. Some people like it, and others don't. If you don't then it's pretty easy to remove it. As for apps I would get:
•[B]OpenFeint[/B]- Every day it sponsors an app that goes free for a day. They don't cheap out usually and sometimes the app can be really fun.
•[B]Free App a Day[/B]- Same thing as OpenFeint but with a different sponsored game.
•[B]Slacker Radio[/B]- In my opinion, much much better than Pandora Radio.
•[B]Windows Live Messenger[/B]- If you have an account for it.
•[B]AppMiner[/B]- Shows you which apps go free. Usually they are crap but sometimes you can catch a gem.
•[B]Facebook[/B]- If you use Facebook.
•[B]iBook[/B]- Newly released from Apple. I don't know if you can use it without iOS4.
•[B]Dictionary[/B]- Portable Dictionary.com that doesn't require internet (for the dictionary part at least.)
•[B]Flashlight[/B]- Turns your iPod into a white screen (or you can custimize it to any other color.)
•[B]Flixster[/B]- Movie showtimes, reviews, ect.
•[B]Wikipanion[/B]- A more iPod-friendly way to browse Wikipedia.
•[B]Text Plus[/B]- Free unlimited texting to any number.
•[B]IMDb[/B]- If you go on the site a lot.
•[B]TeamViewer[/B]- Remotely control a PC with your iPod (requires you to have the client installed and running on the PC you are controlling.)
•[B]Tilt to Live[/B]- Fun, free game. Might not be free for much longer.
•[B]Freaking Inkies[/B]- Another free game that might not be free for much longer.
•[B]Phyzios Studios[/B]- Free physics simulator similar to OE Cake. One of my favorite apps.
•[B]Quick Graph[/B]- Graphing program. Useful for school.
•[B]Lightsaber[/B]- This is a classic almost every iPod/iPhone user has had at one point.
•[B]xkcd[/B]- If you like his comics.
•[B]Dog Whistle Free[/B]- An annoying whistle program. Normally this type of program is useless but what I think is neat is how you can change the pitch with a silder from up to 20 kHz down to 0 kHz. 17 kHz is the "white noise" that supposedly only the young can hear.
•[B]Aquari Web Browser[/B]- A browser that saves no browsing data or history at all.
•[B]Spider Hornet Smash[/B]- A preview for a game that has enough content to be its own game. You control a spider and must tackle hornets for points and build webs to trap other bugs.
Other than that, keep on top of the App Store's top 50 free apps list. Don't download anything with fewer than two stars and always read the reviews first. Lots of idiots download useless apps like the fake mirror app and push it into the top 10.
If you are going to get OS4 as well, abuse the folder feature. I condensed six pages of apps into two and it looks a lot more organized.
