• About to get the iPhone 4S on Verizon, some opinions would be nice

I've owned an iPhone 3GS and I currently own a Nexus S. I'd agree with others are saying -- for what you want to do in terms of apps, Android may be more suitable -- but I can understand wanting to switch away from Android after the god-awful experience I hear the Droid X1 was like. Last time I checked, there were working VNC apps that let you connect to any VNC server (VNC is a common protocol: as long as it's a compatible server, any client should work anyhow). Using your iDevice as a thumb drive will be annoying at best and downright irritating at worst, so you might want to watch out for that (as marcus5 said, you'll have to use external programs). Just for comparison's sake, though, have you tried out a Galaxy Nexus? I'm aware you mentioned the reviews and whatnot, but getting hands-on experience is crucial to making a good decision. The issues you had with your Droid X were common to all owners: Motorola took a dump on Android and generally ruined the phone, leading to plenty of issues. The GN is considerably less broken and functions much better. I recommend you go with what works best for you. Both phones can be very reliable; it's just a shame that your current experience with the Droid X and Motoblur has tainted Android for you - the newest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, makes Android far more usable. Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy it!
From what I've seen there are no devices with the quality track record that iPhone has, and after doing a lot of Galaxy Nexus vs. iPhone 4S, I believe every single review (5+) all said they would prefer the iPhone (even on one Android site). I just want something dependable, and if that means sacrificing some freedom, so be it. As long as I can use FTP (which I remember, FTP On The Go), SSH (I remember an SSH app), and VNC (would be really nice to have this, but not a requirement) I suppose I'm set. I don't mind wiping my phone as long as things like texts and app data don't get reset, and I really don't plan on needing a reset. I kinda just want to get a simple design with nice wallpaper down (get one of those invisible icon apps and make everything pretty) and just use it normally from there. I know I used to load my iTouch with tons of crap from Cydia, but I'm a little too OCD for that now.
Just putting in my 2 cents. I work at Bell up here in Canada, and we do not sell a single Android device that has a better experience in the user interface than the iPhone 4S, because they don't exist. Even the flagship Galaxy Nexus still is incapable of scrolling through lists smoothly at times and due to poor code from Google the icons for widgets in the app drawer are not cached so when you swipe to them the phone stutters while it tries to load them in and play the animation simultaneously. Some of the live wallpapers cause the phone to become sluggish in every area, and it's still not as responsive as iOS or WP7 either. The only Android phone that I've ever seen come close to the iPhone is the Galaxy S II with the Exynos chipset, but that'll be old news soon and even then it's still not as good as the 4 or the 4S. Unless you really care about being able to do some serious tweaking to your phone I would definitely recommend the 4S. Another big advantage of iOS is that the devices don't go EOL for a long time and this leads to constant updates. iOS 5 has 75% of iOS marketshare now, Android ICS has 1.6% of Android marketshare.

You should just get your 4S and get a thumb drive.
I plan on getting the 32GB iPhone 4S (black) now. Another thing that I really hate about Android is a lack of a central "sync" area, or at least a music manager. At least with iTunes all of my music, apps, and anything else on my iPhone will be in one place. The other thing with the Galaxy Nexus is its size. My Droid X is kinda big (I don't have huge hands), and the Galaxy Nexus is even larger - not something I really want. I suppose I can do without downloading in the browser (most of what I did can be done via FTP anyway), and I get the VNC thing - just poor word choice on the publisher's part I suppose. I did compare my phone to the Galaxy Nexus at Best Buy once (just put my phone up to it - the Galaxy Nexus as off/had no battery/was only chained on), and it's a damn large phone. And yeah, sorry, but the Droid X totally ruined my Android experience. I suppose what I really want though is something dependable, and I was pretty sure that's what an iPhone can do for me. Oh, and garrynohome - thanks for that, it puts my mind at ease a bit more. I get that switching to iOS will be a struggle since I've been on Android for 2 years, but I think in the end it will be worth it - or am I just totally crazy right now?
You're not crazy. Also I doubt iOS will be that hard to get used to. More apps conform to the guidelines Apple put in than people do to the guidelines on Android (afaik these were only recently made for Android), so the menu system in most apps is the same. No buttons are generally hidden so everything's easy to access
I suppose it'll help that I've used an iTouch before - has that much changed since iTouch 1g?
The general user interface experience is the same. There are just additions, like -Wallpaper -Pull down notification center -Dedicated search homescreen -Multitasking via double-click home button -Hold down home button for Siri, whom can be very useful Trust me though, getting used to the UI will be the last of your concerns. Hell, with an iPhone, you don't have a lot to be concerned about.
I'm really looking forward to the notifications. Oh, and that reminds me - can I customize what is displayed there? I saw the stocks in my mom's notifications - but I don't give a flying fuck about them...can they be disabled? And since double click home button is multi tasking, is there any popup to control music anymre?

And the music popup is still in the double click, just swipe to the right on the little bottom part and then you have music controls there.

On an entirely unrelated note: perhaps you may want to try out WP7 phones? Despite the stigma attached to Windows phones, they're actually very polished and usable. I'm just throwing suggestions out to make sure you make the best purchase (two years is a long time!)

The whole platform of WP7 isn't anywhere near as exciting as iOS or Android, and I speak from experience. It doesn't feel like a smartphone OS to me.
Honestly, and many people will probably disagree with me on this, changing your iPhone by jailbreaking or other methods to obtain the amount of freedom as Android phones only leads to countless problems in the future. I've done it in the past and have current friends doing it today and they now have problem after problem, slowly leading to a full wipe for the cycle to repeat. If you plan on using the default iOS, then I have no reason to be tempting you away from it, but from what I can determine from your wants, you will be more happy with Android and the increased freedoms that come with it. Now, I know you said you are sick with Androids problems, but the top models on the market today are far, far superior than the first generations. I beg you to at least look at the customer reviews and comparisons before making such an investment.
The problem with many people who jailbreak their phones is the fact that they use untrustworthy sources. I let someone whom I thought knew what they were doing add some apps to my iPad right after I jailbroke it. He added some sources for cracked apps and it ended up messing up the entire theme and plastered ads all over the home screen and even the settings. I was lucky enough to save a backup before I did it, I put it into recovery mode, and now I have no problems. I just don't use a source if Cydia gives me the warning about it unless I absolutely know many others have used it without problem.

I recognize that, kinda :D! Is there any way to develop iOS apps without a Mac though? Do they provide any Windows-based IDE somewhere (or is there an application that does this)? Last I heard it cost $999 to get the software on Macs though, but I have a feeling that's really wrong...
i think you need xcode to develop apps. i'm not sure if you can develop iOS apps on a windows laptop without hacknitoshing it.

I'm currently trying to figure out how to get my own simple one to go from my website to my phone through jailbreaking, but I'm not finding any answers on how to do so. You pick a payment type to be used and it only complains about problems. Pretty sure it doesn't fallback.
You pick a payment type to be used and it only complains about problems. Pretty sure it doesn't fallback.
okay, I guess we'll just wait and see 2 days!
by the way, I got it fucking godlike
Awesome. Depending on what the iPhone looks like in the next iteration I'll be cutting myself off the family plan and getting an iPhone.
