So better battery life, better screen, expandable memory, replaceable battery, and better daytime camera don't matter? Personally I think they're exactly as good as one another. Despite the things I just said were better about the S4, I will admit the One is built better and is more aesthetically pleasing. HTC Sense is also a far nicer experience than Touchpiss. the S4 wins for me because of a richer ROM/Kernel selection. More people buying it = more devs behind it.
I feel like the S4 is better for the hacker crowd, and the HTC One is better for the person who just wants a great phone that works well and looks good while it's at it.

After briefly owning an LG Optimus G, which is a pretty damn nice phone especially for its time, I can't ever again own a phone that doesn't have a rich selection of ROMs on XDA for it. The LG had like 2 good ROMs and the rest were beta unofficial, unfinished shit.

Personally I think they're exactly as good as one another. Despite the things I just said were better about the S4, I will admit the One is built better and is more aesthetically pleasing. HTC Sense is also a far nicer experience than Touchpiss. Only reason I picked the S4 was because of a richer ROM/Kernel selection. The One does better in standardized battery life tests in everything but video playback, which is AMOLED dominated due to low APL. Better screen? If you only value "vivid colors" and contrast, sure. Realistically, outdoor visibility is worse, burn-in is common, the display is anything but calibrated, and high APL scenarios like web browsing won't end well. Expandable memory is something that people just don't use. I've recommended the GS3 and GS4 to people because they wanted removable battery and expandable storage. I have never seen those people use a new battery or add a microSD card, at all. Better daytime camera is true sure, but as soon as you step indoors the GS4 camera is a pain in the ass. LLS basically makes it impossible to take sharp shots and makes the shot to shot latency in the range of seconds, and detail without it is horrific. The lack of OIS means you basically need a tripod in those scenarios. I personally regret recommending the Galaxy S line to people now because when I do, they come back and bitch to me about how ROMs are either horrible Touchwiz or unstable, feature-nonexistent AOSP ROMs.
We must be looking at different battery tests then, because every source I've seen put the S4 above the HTC One in all walks including standby, talk, web browsing, and video playback. The screen isn't as bad as you make it out to be, either. The S4 is reasonably close to where it should be in terms of calibration when using Movie mode, burn in isn't realistically a concern because after 3 years the only burn in my Fascinate S1 had was where the status bar was and you only get to notice that on a pure white background. The S4's screen isn't the best, sure, but it's no slouch either. [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] Also I can't for the life of me figure out what APL means on Google. [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] Probably something something luminance [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] Oh and also to some people, especially music or movie buffs who don't care for streaming, having the 32 gb additional space is a godsend. I won't argue the other points though.
Better battery life? The One does better in standardized battery life tests in everything but video playback, which is AMOLED dominated due to low APL.
Yeah pretty much every test I've seen said the S4 lasted longer...
Better screen? If you only value "vivid colors" and contrast, sure. Realistically, outdoor visibility is worse, burn-in is common, the display is anything but calibrated, and high APL scenarios like web browsing won't end well.
Believe it or not, a lot of people like over-saturated displays. I dare say most people aren't going to look at a phone screen and whine about its lack of realism with its colours. But those people would be very impressed by a very colourful screen with perfect contrast. Do most people care about accurate colour reproduction? For TVs, sure. On a phone, it's just not a big deal that the colours are "too vivid." To be fair, let's just agree that neither of them have the better screen as fact, and that it's entirely up to the user which screen they prefer, because they're both amazing. I will admit that the S4 screen's visibility outdoors is shit though. I had an iPhone 5 before it and it, at 50% brightness, was much better outdoors than the S4 at 100%, which is pretty pathetic. It's practically the only downside that pisses me off though.
Expandable memory is something that people just don't use. I've recommended the GS3 and GS4 to people because they wanted removable battery and expandable storage. I have never seen those people use a new battery or add a microSD card, at all.
Well seeing your friends/colleagues using their phones won't give you much of an idea about the general public. On XDA, people tend to really closely favour phones with expandable memory and swappable batteries. It's not a crucial feature but having it is far nicer than not. Especially when you think forward to what happens when the battery decides to take a shit.
I personally regret recommending the Galaxy S line to people now because when I do, they come back and bitch to me about how ROMs are either horrible Touchwiz or unstable, feature-nonexistent AOSP ROMs.
Well then those people are idiots or they suck at doing research because XDA's S4 ROM/Kernel selection is fucking amazing. There are plenty of great Touchwiz ROMs like Alpha and Goldeneye. Want pure Jellybean? There's BeanStalk, KANGABEAN, ParanoidAndroid, etc etc etc, and they're all stable ROMs clusterfucked with more features than you'll ever probably use. The S4's ROM selection is actually why a lot of hacker-type people prefer it over the One. It was my mistake for trying to ask which phone is better because as I learned, they're different devices aimed for entirely different types of people. It's not really fair to say one is overall better than the other.
I kinda messed up before sending my phone in for repairs, I was messing around with the cerebrus app to test it out. I accidently changed my unlock code, and thought I'd keep it that way. now I've gotten the phone back and I've forgotten that code, and cerebrus can't connect to my device so I can't change it through that. there is no "forgot password" button either, only emergency calls!
Reflash?
don't really want to lose everything I have on it, isn't it possible to unlock it somehow?
don't really want to lose everything I have on it, isn't it possible to unlock it somehow?
Keep putting in false unlock information and it'll eventually ask you to log into your Google account and then to change your password.
Keep putting in false unlock information and it'll eventually ask you to log into your Google account and then to change your password.
tried that, now I'm at my 40th try, still no google account option

Nice! Last time I sent my phone in for repairs they reflashed stock for no reason.
Very tempted to get a Galaxy Note 3
I'm intrested in it myself, but have they said anything for a release date? I think I saw the 25th of sept for the UK but nothing else really.
Can't decide on a wallpaper yet. I can swipe up or hit my home button to bring up the app drawer. [t]http://imgur.com/fdWRO3o.jpg[/t] #longshadowcirclejerk #dattime
the galaxy gear has a 1 day battery life who the fuck is going to buy this [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] Also in other news I smashed the screen on my S2 - apparently it can survive multiple drops onto solid concrete just fine but one onto carpet? Nope. Gonna buy a nexus 4 at some point but in the meantime I'm loving my shitty sony dumbphone which has a battery which lasts for fucking days and charges in a matter of minutes
You got WIFI / 3G turned on?
not, but the problem fixed itself! Cerebrus suddenly decided to follow my commands and removed the lock.
not, but the problem fixed itself! Cerebrus suddenly decided to follow my commands and removed the lock.
Pleased to hear it, but if you ever do get locked out there is a way to reset it using ADB, but you'd need USB debugging enabled.
Any way I can partition my phone, and allow mass storage upon a partition? At the moment I have no Mass Storage but I really need it!
Any way I can partition my phone, and allow mass storage upon a partition? At the moment I have no Mass Storage but I really need it!
Mass storage is gone.
One day battery life? The reason I love my pebble so much is because I don't have to put it on the charger next to my phone every night. And when I do need to charge it, the magnetic charging makes me happy it's dead, just so I can enjoy the magic of sticking it on that convenient little cable.
Not to mention the Galaxy Gear charging looks complicated as fuck for no reason other than Samsung being Samsung. I'm just gonna sit here and wait for an actually serious smartwatch concept by someone who knows what they're doing (hopefully Google).
Also, downloading media to my phone on a hot day makes me feel like my pocket is about to combust.
sdwise, are you still deciding on the Moto X? In fact, does ANYONE here have the Moto X?

It makes me feel like a robot charging itself

Been waiting on them to ship mine for months.
sdwise, are you still deciding on the Moto X? In fact, does ANYONE here have the Moto X?
Unless the nexus 5 has a cdma radio, I'll be getting the Moto X come may. I'm waiting until my contract runs out because buying off contract with cdma is pointless. [editline]5th September 2013[/editline]
Lucky you. Been waiting on them to ship mine for months.
I preordered mine in february. Got it last montth after a couple weeks of calling Best Buy over and over to get shipping dates and checking their shelves as close to opening time as possible. Had to settle for red instead of black (it was the last one on the shelf the one day i went and they had one in stock), but I put the black carbon fiber Skinomi skin on it. Looks nice. And the carbon fiber is the second skin I've had on it. The first one got destroyed saving my pebble from what would have been a disasterous gouge in the face. This is why we use screen protectors, people!
I still haven't applied my screen protector. Can't be arsed honestly, it's bumped into millions of edges and hasn't had a scratch yet.
