Camera is disappointing though. I don't expect much from a phone camera but goddamn, this is disgraceful. Thought it was even worse at first until I realised that it was only shooting at 1.3mp. Bumping it up to the full 8mp did help a little but it still likes to overexpose like crazy. Makes skin look really dead as well.
You can use the HDR mode, you'll get way less under/overexposed areas that way.
Its really not the camera hardware at fault, its that the AOSP camera software sucks shit through ten bricks.
I find it hard to believe that better camera software could make the pictures taken much better. Is there any phone out there that uses the same sensor as N4 but produces significantly better images?

I've compared AOSP camera app with the Sense 5 camera app. The difference in quality is immense. I don't know why that is, though.
You can do a shitload of post-processing almost instantaneously nowadays. Noise reduction, sharpness filters, exposure compensation etc. HTC, Samsung, LG and everyone else would all produce in house software and you'd get varying results based on it. The raw input from the camera would be the same but the final output would be different. (example here. I know it's not a phone camera but check out the difference between the RAW and JPEG outputs. the JPEGs get automatically post processed in-body).
To be fair, I'm pretty hype for the DSC-QX10 and 100, may end up buying one of those when they're released in the UK.

I spliced this for all the microSD and removable battery debates.
None of my friends ever replaced their battery, yet they cringe when they see my Nexus 4. Like two of them have SD cards, some no-name brand as well that doesn't even have a class rating on it.
It's people like this that cause OEMs to pull away from these two things.

Literally in /r/android I had someone tell me that class 2 microSD in their Galaxy S was great and didn't cause performance issues.
I just can't sit through these things without brutally slapping down their points anymore.

If I say anything at all.

Nothing more than better software. I remember when I moved from Sense to CM10.1 on my old One X, it felt like I had my dumb phone camera again. And I also lost the ability to shoot slow motion video. Shit sucked, man.
[editline].[/editline]
We should write better software for stock CM10.1 and do a pull request.
There's a program called Focal in CM now, seems to behave better than the regular camera app
Look, if you can't customize your android homescreen for shit, you can always visit my colourscreens for their tutorials.

Are you replying to a post from a few pages back or something?
Speaking of though, in the process of getting mine how I want it. Need a photo frame of sorts that doesn't have shitloads of padding around it like the default one. Could I use UCCW to achieve this?

Would this show up in a derivative of CM like PA? Might flash the 4.3 PA on my Note 2 since the default camera app with Android is garbage. That's at least one thing Samsung did well.
{snip I'm retarded}

Depends if they decide to add it, which they haven't AFAIK. But you could just download the APK.
I tried Focal and pretty much everything about it sucked. The viewfinder was locked to like 10fps in photo mode, the icons had no descriptions (seems that they added explanations if you hold them nowadays), the controls were WAY too cluttered and the final image quality was

I know about that, but post-processing can't really do much to hide the deficiencies of the sensor and lenses. With post-processing you're basically trying to apply filters that you think will make the image look more pleasing to the average person, but that doesn't mean it'll actually be of higher quality. You almost inevitably have to make tradeoffs. For example letting the image have more noise vs. everything looking blurry and smudged out. Then there's the sharpening filters that basically just increase local contrast and introduce annoying halos around edges. Personally I like my images to have less postprocessing because you can always touch them up later on your computer if necessary, but it's hard to repair damage caused by overdone postprocessing.
Jerry Hildenbrand just put up his Moto X review. It's a good read, and very eye opening.
Teaser: /r/androidcirclejerk would call him an iShill for the last paragraph.

So then what's an actually good camera app and can I use it to replace the default when it comes to intents?

I'm still using the one that came with my S1 all these years ago. I don't remember what it was exactly but it got the job done for everything I threw on it, from emulators to playing movies so I'm not one to complain.
Former Nokia employees plan to make android style Nokia phones, and this time get smart phones right.

I'd hope to see a almost stock experience on these devices. However, I don't like the name "Newkia", too many people will think it's a fake clone of Nokia phones. Like the HiPhone

oh boy page 172 will be a battlezone.
get your nokia made helmets, guys.
I have a class 4 16GB and it's speedy enough to not cry about it and I can't really test longevity since it's been like, a week since I bought it.
Yeah I paid $20 for a Class 4 MicroSD, fight me. I ain't buying shit online since I'd probably get a counterfeit that would die in 6 months (see: the reason why everyone cries about SD cards)
Also I never realized the menu for the stock camera app is a tap and drag, now I hate it 100% less.

CLASS 9 OR NOTHING #YOLO MOTHERFUCKER CAN'T TOUCH MY READ/WRITE SPEED #SWAG
But seriously. Cheap brand name class 9s and 10s on Amazon Golden Box deals... The best.
I'm just using it for photo storage for now and I imagine a 4MB/s speed is adequate for that.
I take a lot of photos.

i stole a microsd from my mom who was using it for Windows ReadyBoost before her adapter died
no idea what class it is nor do i know how to check, but it's never failed me

I never understood Windows ReadyBoost. Almost any USB that you plug in is going to be slower than your RAM and your pagefile on your HDD. What's the point of putting a page file on your USB device unless it is an SSD or something?
Bought a 32gb class 10 card for £12.99, died on me after a month and getting a replacement in the post soon

I think with all of these shitty sensors, the most important part is keeping detail and preserving accuracy. Little to no noise reduction, with only focusing on reducing chroma noise. Very little sharpening. That's really about it.

You get what you pay for, really.
If you want something close to good, you need to shell out for higher grade NAND. You get faster speeds as a result, but the really big part is better reliability.

I spent like $50 last year on a 64GB µSD. Speeds are okay (around Class 10) but it hasn't failed on me yet. Also totally worth the price for the capacity.
Got a quick question before I go to bed, is leaving your phone charging during the night bad for its battery health? I've heard overcharging is not good in the long run for phones like the Nexus without removable batteries so should I be concerned since I usually put it on the charger around 10 pm on weeknights and shut it off to charge until 6 in the morning in that low power state.
It's fine, the battery never stays at 100%. As a safe guard, it lets itself discharge once reaching 100%, then once below 100% by a bit, it charges again.
