Got my nexus 7 a few days ago, still moving my music library through the slow ass method of uploading it. I installed some basic apps, but anyone got some reccomendations for a beginner? Completely new to android, besides having an android phone a while ago but I really only used it as a phone.
Got another reason to hate media transfer protocol, it doesn't support windows explorer's f5 refresh. lmao. I couldn't find a new folder for ages because of that
Why alcohol though? Does it add a protective layer?
Rubbing alcohol is nonconductive. No danger of shorting your phone out if it happens to get into the cracks and crevices.
nexus 5 is leaking more than a senile old man without his depends

Damn that black/white looks fucking hot.
I'd probably buy black, just because it's so neutral, but if I won a black/white one, I'd keep it.
I'm seriously considering updating to the Nexus 5 if the Play Store opens devices for Czech Republic in the following months. I mean we got Music with All Access this month so I'll believe anything.
I heard from several people (including an optometric technician) that using a dish wash soap on glasses adds a protective layer. I wonder if that applies to glass on electronics as well. Obviously you should be careful and you shouldn't rinse it off with water (unless you have a waterproof phone).
I wouldn't mess with that for a lot of reasons.
I'm getting a HTC One in two weeks. Which other phone should I consider checking out before that isn't the S4?
LG G2, Moto X, Nexus 5(should be within 2 weeks)
I'm super happy with my LG G2, battery like is crazy insane even on the stock rom even after snapchat locked the camera and tried to run the battery dry for 45+ minutes.

I have one and I like it, the writing feature seems to work decently well. Though it is my first smartphone so.

Why does the camera change position on the side shot vs the back shot?
Why does the camera change position on the side shot vs the back shot?
Because it's a render.

Those are all good phones, but honestly the S4 and G2 are interchangeable in my eyes. Both are Touchwiz or Touchwiz-esque UIs, both in visual style and design philosophy, both have very similar hardware design, especially with the glossy plastic aesthetic.
That said, G2 blows the S4 out of the water any day. LG still hasn't gone full retard like Samsung has lately.
The N5 is really just more of the same, a kissing cousin of the G2.
The Moto X is the only option for those that want a phone that isn't the size of a GS4/One/G2. Otherwise I can't really recommend it.
Too lazy to customize my homescreen properly at the moment so just left it as a single screen with a clock and a shortcut for all icons.

I'm not really sure I agree with considering both interchangeable at all. My GF has a GS4, very little is similar enough to the GS4 to say something like that. It has just as many similarities to Sense as Touchwiz.
The phone feels completely different in your hand with more of a neutral weight in comparison to the GS4 which has a bit more of a top heavy weighting. The shape to the phone I think is a little more similar to the HTC One too.
The LG software and stock rom is actually really great despite what every reviewer has to say. I'm incredibly impressed with how smoothly it runs but small things like the Touchwiz/iOS style bubble SMS app wastes the screen space incredibly and constantly returns to the top of the convo. I desperately want the CM/AOSP messaging and gallery app for this phone. If I could switch for those on top of being rooted so I can get Adaway and Light Flow it would be about perfect.
The N5 according to the G2 boards is going to have very little similarities other than OIS and the Snapdragon 800. It's really more a cousin compared the sister phone which most people are trying to pass it off as.
I got to play with a Moto X a little bit and honestly if you take the N5 out of the picture with just the HTC One and Galaxy S4 being the flagship alternatives I would have jumped all over it provided T-Mobile carried it.

It is on T-Mobile, it's just $600

The design philosophy is very much like Samsung's, they really like all the Air x and Smart y. The visual style is very much apparent. The G2 is very much a different animal compared to the S4, but that's the product of being on the 8974 platform as opposed to 8064.

The shape shares more with the One to some extent, but that's because of the battery design. The material choices share much more with Samsung's Hyperglaze ID than HTC or Motorola.

I never said the stock ROM was bad, just that it's really quite similar to Touchwiz.

Which is why I called it a cousin. Broadly similar in platform but there's still plenty of differences.

I wouldn't. The Moto X is really not that good of a phone in my opinion. Camera is nothing special, display isn't well calibrated, battery life is merely average. The only reason why it's notable is the size and shape.

I'd like to interject for a moment that the Moto X actually does do decently in battery life (for me). I've used pretty much every other phone (other than the G2) available so far, and the Moto X does better for me by far, even with location services (when they were disabled on my other phones).
It's also great in size since I've got small girl-hands.
Held a Xperia Z Ultra on friday, my cousin bought it, and I must say, I didn't expect the device to be that thin. Probably going to switch to the Z1 when and if it comes out in the US, LTE variant at least.

LG phones have always had crazy battery life, I managed to go a full 3 days on my G Pro with moderate-heavy use on the stock rom
looks like samsung got burned

Sheesh, all popular technology companies do is slapfight like a bunch of kids.

The size is the big deal.
Battery life is meh by any objective benchmark.
[editline]27th October 2013[/editline]
I must qualify that by saying that it's meh because it's not exceptional. It's good, but not what it should've been.
I've heard that the battery life is about as good as the other flagships out there...

The Smart View stuff and "samsung gimmicks" are all disabled by default. The design is similar but I would expect that from two korean companies in a Samsung dominated market.
I never said the stock ROM was bad, just that it's really quite similar to Touchwiz.
I never said you did, I just couldn't find a online review praising it at all.
Which is why I called it a cousin. Broadly similar in platform but there's still plenty of differences.
Yeah, I was agreeing. Just wanted to reiterate it lol.

I was never aware of it being a $600 phone, I got my LG G2 for $600... It seemed like to me as an amazing entry level/mid range phone. Cell phone cameras are never great and I find the GS4's to be super mediocre.
BBM Android just opened up, no line. At least that's what I got out of this email that I read the subject line of and discarded.
Anyone else using it here? I need contacts so I can actually check this thing out.
What Facebook apps do you guys recommend?
I've tried oStream, Spatio, Friendcaster, Tinfoil but feel something is missing but not sure what.
Never used the official app before as I've heard how terrible it is.
Try the official one before going to unoffical ones. In my experience on my Galaxy Nexus and now my Note 3, it's always smooth and battery life seems normal. Before they switched from an HTML5 wrapper to an actual app, the scrolling and UI sucked. Now it's decent.
The FB app is still a design nightmare, it runs like crap on everything I've tried it on, and it has this creepy stuff about it, too. Like, looking for other data in the device.
I use Spatio on my CM device and Klyph on my others. I can accept the limitations of third party apps (which are really because of FB's API) because the FB app is so bad and creepy.

I uninstalled facebook messenger after I realized there was absolutely no way to turn it off
You couild kill every process it was running, and as soon as you got a message the annoying overlay would pop straight back up
Once it was running invisibly over everything, I tried to tap a certain button on the screen and Facebook just opened the friends list
I installed BBM, saw it took up about 45mb and wouldn't stop crashing, then I uninstalled it. Why someone would make something so clunky and intrusive is beyond me. Whatsapp are the only ones who have done it right IMO.

works fine for me.
