I'm hoping the new Hangouts SMS thing will bring the messages to all devices like desktop Google+, not just show them on phone.
To add to what sdwise said, Google makes money off people using their services (buying things on the Google Play store, buying subscriptions to services, etc). More people using their devices, means that people are more likely to use their services. However, Google makes most of their money off ad revenue so I'm sure that's a nice benefit, not their main goal.
And, as most people overlook, google gets your data when you use their services. Your data is dollar signs to them.
Which is why using an adblocker on google services makes you an asshole. You're getting a free service and you're literally worth nothing to them.
When you use a Google service, you are compensating them! Not with currency, but with your data, which translates to ad revenues.

Depending on how it works and such, I'm sure my friends will use Hangouts more often. Woo
Of course Facebook revamps their Messenger app on the day Google announces important updates to Hangouts.
It's probably still shit. And 95% of my Facebook friends are shit. It's those 5% of people I'm friends with that are keeping me on that shitty website (and I think that's the case for 95% of Facebook users).

Was just thinking, I use Hangouts on my phone, tablet, and desktop chrome browser. If an SMS came in on the phone it would be cool if it displayed in the browser version too, and if replying that message is sent back over SMS via the phone.
Almost everyone in Australia has unlimited SMS so it's very popular still.

Yeah if I chatted with people over Facebook often, I'd use Facebook often and I don't.
Although I will try the app out, I remember how bad the previous versions were.

I'm also semi-scared because, Facebook

yup, I could basically nuke my Facebook account. The few people that I am in contact with from my friends I have on WhatsApp, Skype.
But I'm too lazy and it's a great stalking tool.
I read here that they just want to popularize the Android platform, not make profit. Which is great. I find the Nexus 5 to be superior to other smartphones and its half the price.
I will wait for some reviews to surface, though. I want something that I can use for many years.
That last sentence basically tears it. The Nexus is the only phone almost guaranteed to keep getting updates until it just can't run them anymore.

I just have so many apps tied into it... They could be migrated, but I'm too lazy for that.
Also, I use Down, so...
The Messenger app is less Facebooky so I will actually try it out today and no one is gonna talk to me over it

That's great. I didn't do enough research when I bought my current phone (Sony Ericsson G900) and a few months later I found out it was discontinued even though it was a year old or something.
Facebook needs to update their actual app and make it NOT FUCKING BROKEN.
HTC, now with Bullets by 9mm!
Too late
And it's not uploaded yet
Wouldn't it be nice if Google actually told everyone when their product announcements would be, you know, like every other company does..
anyone else having issues with the play store? it keeps throwing errors trying to update apps
To add more information than just a Disagree: Nope, I just updated Twitter and Snapseed, no errors in sight. Maybe a local server went crazy?
Me and my friends all got errors for about 30 minutes during dinner once. Same time, same location. There's some shit wrong with the Play Store.

It now crashes when I look at pictures.
New Facebook Messenger better have Light/Dark themes. All white themes on OLED is just asking to get fucked in the arse.

Hangouts update rolling out.

My GF got the updated play store yesterday and I got it sometime in the last couple hours, can't wait for KitKat. By the time AOSP roms start all moving up my G2 should finally have some solid AOSP roms, excited as hell.
What logic does Google Hangouts use to determine which device to notify? I installed the Chrome extension but it seems to be preventing my phone from getting notifications about new messages.
Enabling chat in gmail seems just as wonky, sometimes my phone will get a notification, sometimes it won't. It seems to really struggle to determine when I have the tab or chat window open and when I'm only on my phone.
I'd really prefer it to just notify everything every time there's a new message and then clear them when you read it. It's one of those things where I can tell something just isn't working right but I can't tell what.
California Cop tickets woman for driving with Google Glass
Chickenshit cop doesn’t know a goddamn thing about Glass, I guarantee you that. As it says in the article, if that dick can’t prove the woman was watching a YouTube video or something, she should have been let go.
When you give power to the ignorant, this is what happens.

It's hilarious how Facebook uses HTC phones, as if those are the most common ones with Facebook.

The notification is sent to every connected device, it just doesn't work sometimes.
That's a defect. You can get it fixed under warranty.
nah, I googled and a lot of people have the same issue. it's also not that bad, but noticeable in low light

Any word on whether the update currently being rolled out addresses it?
