Assuming that you got the S4 4G i9505 and not the i9500 and if you are brave enough, I recommend you flash Foxhound ROM and Faux kernel. It is miles ahead of the stock ROM and you don't lose any features. Faux kernel is a must since it also significantly improves the screen calibration (night and day difference).
ViPER4Android FX is an app that requires root access, you can read all about that in the OP, which gives you more advanced options into sound processing. I mainly just use it to take off the gain limiter from -1.9dB to 0dB.
Light Manage/Lightflow is also recommended for notifications since it lets you pick what colour to have your notification light blink per-app.
Easiest way to root the phone is to download the Galaxy S4 Toolkit and then it comes with a one click root kit essentially. Too easy.

I can confirm this to be true, can't stand using any other player, especially Youtube
viper is all gimmick. like seriously, "cure tech+"?

That's why I just use it for adjusting gain since the S4 comes with a limiter in place. Also the equaliser can be handy for global settings, rest of the settings are mostly gimmick.
How come Poweramp has much better audio quality than the stock player, Google Play Music, and Doubletwist?
their custom audio engine for EQ and tone adjustment is very nice (while being more battery efficient than stock audio effects)

I don't know anything Android, is rooting my device akin to jailbreaking an iphone? I know android devices are more "open" but I'm not sure how much more open they are and I'm afraid I'll horribly fuck it up somehow.
There's a checkbox in Security settings that lets you install random APKs, instead of just stuff from Play Store, that's akin to jailbreaking an iPhone.
Rooting gives you complete access to the phone, way past what you can do on iOS.
To the end user, rooting is a lot like jailbreaking, but it's way more than just jailbreaking.

Apparently an updated audio engine is coming out soonish, around this month.
There's three levels of "jailbreak", in my opinion: Allowing non-Play-Store apps (which is what most people want), which you can achieve by going into the settings of nearly any Android device, rooting (which allows you to do a hell of a lot more than iOS can even accomplish), and flashing a custom ROM (which probably doesn't actually count to most people because it changes so much)
I think removing the carrier lock will unlock my bootloader...
Yes, it is also possible to find custom ROMs that are based on the stock ROM and are direct upgrades.

I thought Winamp was being discontinued.
I thought Winamp was being discontinued.
Speaking of, is that as bad as the PC/Desktop version of it?
I thought Winamp was being discontinued.
It's been bought by someone else after all

We were talking about PowerAMP, not Winamp

Installed Kitkat on my old Galaxy S. Holy jesus it looks horrible on low resolution devices. The toast notifications look like compressed unreadable cancer. Is there any way I can theme Kitkat to look like Jellybean or is it best to just roll back to 4.3.1?

I had an iPod that was jailbroken, with root access, so it's not really that much more when you root as opposed to jailbreak.

There's an xposed module that reverts the toasts back to JB, that might help
I have no idea if that is serious or not, considering this is the most sarcastic place on the web.
Not sarcastic, you're already turning this into your own Steam app basically. And considering you're doing all that by modifying an already compiled apk, I assume that only increases the difficulty to really do anything other than modifying icons, yet you've still done it.
Valve should be really fucking ashamed that you could make a better Android app by hacking their apk than they could by hiring a developer. (edit: and fuck, I'm pretty sure they could pay for the best Android designers and coders out there)
I said something about two dollars before, if you want them, I'm here.
Well, on that note, if anyone does want to, PM me.
But thanks, thanks a lot (Seriously), it makes me realise that I'm actually doing a good job and people appreciate what I'm doing.

How's the holo mod for the Facebook app?

I doubt they do, the way Valve works, the mobile versions are probably just side projects of someone -- of Jason Mitchel in our case

There will always be people who appreciate it when someone does something to benefit others, myself included.
I don't use Steam on my phone at all, but I'm looking forward to your future projects with app development and how you'll progress over time.
Keep up the good work!
Doesn't Facebook largely use some kind of an online switch to give you different designs, rendering any changes in the apk possibly worthless/way too complicated? I know they've had two designs for the stable (I know, good joke) version of Facebook for quite a while, one with bottom black tabs, one without.
Facebook Alpha build has a "HolOS7" (forgive me, dear lord) design, at least.
How's the holo mod for the Facebook app?
No progress yet, by the looks of it, it's all on their servers. As some people have a different UI to others, while using the same app version.
I bet that somehow explains the bad performance of the app.
Can't remember who wanted that volume application updated, it might of been dsidwed, either way, I've updated it to be more holo than before, haven't changed any of the icons, if you want them changed, just ask.

So I FINALLY found a way to transfer files from desktop to android without losing the file dates
Boot into recovery and adb push it, that's the only way

I don't know about you, but I still use the PC version daily. :v:

In addition, flashing rom requires unlocking the boot loader which sometimes requires carrier unlocking first.

As I said previously, I'm not expecting UI miracles from Steam, even their desktop app UI is pretty bad. But the current android app is a disaster.
The websites (profiles etc) have been improving a bit lately, so I'm hoping they're planning UI redesigns for all Steam apps soon.
It's even worse when they haven't updated the app since March 2012..
