So my mom went and bought an S4, because both her TF101 and Sprint S2 suddenly have passwords on them that she didn't set.
What the fuck
And then her S4 inherited the password. I DON'T EVEN...
Could this be a rogue app shared across devices? She's always had her stuff set to auto update
Is it like a passcode lock? Or just some random prompt asking for a password?
It's a password lock, letters and numbers, and it's not her gmail password because it's 2 characters too long

The only way an app could is after it's installed the app asks the user if it can set a password for your device. It's really impossible to miss this as it looks like this:

If you wanna check which apps have this permission go to settings > security > device administrators, apps that are checked are prolly doing it. If nothing is checked, either someone is taking her phone and putting a password on it, or it's not a password lock.
http://omegadroid.co/wanted-knox-void-warranty-0x1/
That's why I will NEVER EVER buy a Samsung.
The stupid part is that the KNOX is two parts, the actual KNOX flag which voids your warranty when tripped (eFuse for flashing), and the CUSTOM flag, which only trips when the phone is rooted, but doesn't void your warranty at all.

So you can root your phone, you just can't do anything (really) with that root (no custom recovery/ROMs)
whoo I survived MWC
I want a phone with an external SD card, replaceable battery, and (upgradable to) Kitkat, that isn't from a scumbag "no fun allowed" company. Wtf are my options now.
The LG G Pro 2 has all of those and will be available very shortly in Korea, it's basically a bigger G2 with 3gb of ram, a slightly bigger battery and a SD card slot. You could also go with a Korean LG G2 if you're not too concerned with the band differences.
I'm guessing Samsung/HTC/etc are also going to be making this change in their ROMs as well, so I can't see it hurting anyone. Nexus devices don't have SD card slots in the first place, everyone else will be running a ROM with the change included.
Samsung said that since they are partnered with Google, they are going to comply with the standard and use the sandboxed SD access. Motherfuckers.

This is the most depressing read.
I feel like murdering someone after reading that.

Xperia Z2 has everything but battery.
If the M8 is easier to repair I'd probably recommend that but I'm not going to hold my breath.
Oh man I'm refraining myself hard from pre-ordering the Z2 right now because of 3 reasons:
1) I can upgrade in September
2) Sony have done 6 monthly refreshes in the past
3) There is nothing wrong with my current phone
Posted a review, got a reply from the developers. A first for me, and I think this pretty much confirmed that 25fps video recording is impossible. Darn it.

Xperia ZR has all that + waterproof.
I wish more manufacturers would look into putting e-ink displays on the back of their phones. I feel like it would be useful as hell (I would definitely read a lot more books).

I don't want to spend an arm and a leg to import that russian phone that has one

Google and everyone who made device specific camera API seems to have completely ignored PAL

Time to voice your opinion if you have a device with MicroSD card slot (or like to use file managers)
Just bought a 16GB Moto G for the girlfriend.
Can I be your next girlfriend?

Community is tearing Jeff a new arsehole in the most polite way.
SD cards are so 2010
Cloud storage will never replace SD cards. Even if we get to a point where everyone has the bandwidth and the data caps to handle it, we'll still have batteries that die after a few hours of streaming music over 4G
I like not blowing through my data cap in a half hour. 4G speeds are cool but not being able to use them effectively is not. So until Verizon gets their head out of their money-coated asshole, I will be using SD cards to store music.
My HTC one was quite easy to root.
- get unlock key from htc
- fastboot
- fastboot oem unlock
- enter unlock key
- flash recovery (twrp is nice)
- flash ROM/su
It sounds very difficult, but the guides are very clear. Anyone can do it. HTC's unlock thing is actually a really good thing. They don't want you to S-off your device, but they are totally OK with custom ROMs and root.
I have 4.4.2 running on my Rezound(Plain Andy at XDA), and it was dead simple. I used the ADB tools and the phone's USB cable
HTC unlock, reboot
Flash Philz custom recovery(also at XDA)
Reboot to that recovery
Choose the wipe option, choose the clean to install new Rom(uncheck that binary option first)
Install zip, choosing the PlainAndy zip file you put on your SD card
reboot
Before I did this, I was running Infection 2.9.1 also from XDA. After installing Infection, I ran that Rumrunner file, also at XDA, to get S-off. Rumrunner worked great however it requires no anti-virus and no firewall to be running, among other things. Even closing processes that I thought shut that stuff off, I could not get Rumrunner to work using Win 7. So I booted a linux live USB stick(Mint) and ran the linux Rumrunner. That worked right away.
If you don't have S-off, then you need to extract the boot.img file from your custom ROM zip, put that on your SD card, then flash that after you flash the rom. That's how I installed Infection. I used Amon Ra recovery, since they advise you use that if you're coming from 4.0.x to 4.2.2. Once you are at least to 4.2 or higher you can switch to a newer recovery.
Guys, Nexus 5 red or Z2. I can't decide.
so i just saw a commercials, where you buy a kitkat and win Nexus 7
that shit was like months ago, and now they decided to bring the contest here

Z2, it has a better camera

Maybe by then there'll be some fancy battery system that lasts weeks so you can use your 4G all day long

LG G2.
My girlfriend traded her Galaxy S4 to a friend who had a LG G2 after she got tired of the horrible battery life, the garbage user experience of Touchwiz and the unusability of any AOSP ROM. Sadly I think simply being the Sprint variant contributed significantly.
Took me 3+ hours and two visits to two different Sprint stores to get the retarded phones traded and activated. Apparently half of the Sprint phone techs are absolutely incompetent and happen to get very angry with you when you tell them what they can do. After today's experience I would never recommend Sprint after experiencing every deadzone in town with it as well as the absolute horrible clusterfuck that is their terrible network and infrastructure.
Either way, we're now a happy family of LG G2's!

Damn that was quick.
