Looks kind of metro.

Looks like iOS 7.
Looks like some kind of weird baby of iOS 7 (translucency, blur, more shapes other than squares) and Metro (typography focused). I don't hate it.

So how are you dealing with all your friends and people you know fleeing from What's app to other unknown messenger programs? So far I tried to get people to use hangouts, but they just say "duh that is from da google they spy on me" and then move on to something else.
I've never used Whatsapp and never knew anyone that did. Everyone I know just uses Steam, Skype, or Facebook Messenger. v:v:v I can't get people to use Hangouts for the life of me, mostly because there's no standalone desktop client.
because there's no standalone desktop client.
?
I used whatsapp waaaaaaaaay back at is inception and uninstalled it because none of my friends were using it. Since then I've had people get mad at me for not responding to messages in whatsapp. Same shit happens with imessage to be fair. My iPhone using friends still have issues with texts they send to me being converted to imessage almost a year since I last used an apple product.
Has the I message issue too, unregistered my device through some Apple site. A quick Google search for something like "Apple unregister device" should get you what you need.
?
What do you mean ? There's no client for Hangouts. You either have to use a messaging client that supports Google Talk (which doesn't support Hangouts' features properly) or keep a web browser open to use it.

We use Facebook messenger sometimes but not near as much.

Granted, it operates through Chrome as a background process, but for the most part its frontend is its own client. [editline]7th March 2014[/editline] It the Hangouts Chrome extension btw.

It thinks I'm always at my PC and clears the message notifications on my phone immediately

Got my Nexus 5 today, it's my first Android and I really like it so far. So, should I bare with the whole hangouts thing or is there a good alternative out there?
I really like EvolveSMS.
I've never been one to use google's social services, So I'll defiantly give this a whiz when my Nexus arrives this coming week
excuse me but why dont people just text each other?
excuse me but why dont people just text each other?
That's what they want to do, but there's 8 million different SMS apps I'm fine with hangouts
excuse me but why dont people just text each other?
Texting is really expensive in some places. Its also really bad for group messaging and photos
excuse me but why dont people just text each other?
Overseas texting is expensive.
Here at uni half of the students are from overseas and a percentage of them don't have UK numbers, and as we have campus-wide wifi, using apps that can run just over data are much more useful.
I've never been one to use google's social services, So I'll defiantly give this a whiz when my Nexus arrives this coming week
why did you buy a nexus the epitome of the google ecosystem if you don't like google's social services [editline]8th March 2014[/editline] i'm serious. more so than any other android device, the nexus line was designed to push google services

The only two google services I use on mine are gmail and hangouts for SMS, I disabled almost everything else and it still works perfectly
Because you don't need to use them? The only two google services I use on mine are gmail and hangouts for SMS, I disabled almost everything else
Legit, I don't actually use gmail (I do have an account) Microsoft emails for life :> (C'mon Boxes)
Legit, I don't actually use gmail (I do have an account) Microsoft emails for life :> (C'mon Boxes)
MS email services have actually gotten decent lately. Far as I know though you still can't do "you+somestring@outlook.com" though.
excuse me but why dont people just text each other?
Because it's really old-fashioned? Texting has so many limitations compared to instant messaging, and also is sometimes unstable. The biggest limitation for me is not being able to see if the message is delivered/read. There's also the factor if your phone is off or lost signal, and you get a bunch of messages, they start very slowly coming through when your phone is turned on/receives signal. The unstability in SMS sometimes means messages can take hours to come through or actually don't get sent through at all, I've had that a few times. tl;dr the SMS protocol is old, limited and sometimes unstable
