Seems to be pretty easy to update your phone as long as you buy an unlocked phone in general.
HTC was super speedy in updating all their unlocked Ones to Kitkat even with Sense 5/5.5.
It's just the carriers that cause delays.
the Nexus gets its updates directly from Google, no wait for carriers.
It can take months after the nexus gets theirs for carriers to push out the same update to other phones.
this is the case and reason why i got the Nexus.
Why not a better phone (spec wise) + vanilla ROM + updated ROM?
maybe cause i don't want to wait a month for an update??
and a 5% spec bump doesn't sell me
Why not a better phone (spec wise) + vanilla ROM + updated ROM?
last I checked, it was one of the better specced phones out there, but that was a while ago. kinda fallen out of the cycle so not sure whats the best out there anymore.
from the little googling I did, it's still one of the best phones available and definitely one of the more pretty looking too
[editline]11th April 2014[/editline]
compared to Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, the only difference is 0.2 GHz (with only specs in mind). same CPU model and everything, so to me a Nexus 5 would be a lot more worthwhile. wouldn't even need to install a custom ROM to debloat it either

They aren't the same CPU model. granted the N5 has a snapdragon 800 vs. the M8's and S5's 801 so it doesn't make much of a difference. The only thing both phones have are better batteries, sensors that you may or may not use (ie IR blaster), and an SD slot. And having a vanilla ROM makes the SD card weird, so that's iffy. There's also the M8's speakers and the G5's, um, heartrate sensor?
Speaking of I recently learned I can get T-Mobile to cancel my Verizon plan and just give them a throwaway phone from ebay instead, thus being able to keep my GNexus. If I can just get off my part of the contract (I'm not sure if they'll cancel a single line on a family plan), I think I might just go for it.

was thinking of the CPU, not the chipset (which are all krait 400's)
if you think cost / spec ratio or w/e it's called, then a nexus 5 will give you much, much more for the cash. here in Norway, the HTC One M8 is literally double the price of the Nexus 5 while not delivering much more than it.
if you want the sensors or not, that's entirely on opinions and needs though. to me, the lack of sensors compared to the One M8 is really no big deal for me since I have absolutely no need for it. so I'd say with only specs in mind (GPU, CPU, chipset, you name it) the Nexus 5 would probably be the better purchase, unless you want or need the sensors which comes with the other top end phones or slightly longer battery time (I haven't done any research on that, so no clue how much faster the Nexus 5 runs dry compared to the other phones)
the only downside to me in regards with the Nexus 5 is the lack of SD slot. I've never managed to use all my phones internal capacity so I really don't much need for it myself, but it's definitely a minus that you're unable to increase the capacity of your phone.
Any particular reason you guys are going with the Nexus 5?
For me, basically it was the best phone to get for it's price range. It has pretty positive reviews, great specs and them updates. Apps are probably less likely to break because it's known to be a Google developing device. It's a pure android device that isn't hit with OEM or carrier crap. It's a nexus device of course. The camera is ok but I heard news/rumours of Google fixing camera issues and later adding RAW imaging which would be cool to play with. The 16GB Moto G was hard to find and I really wanted the 32GB of storage. I would miss the SD card but realistically I think 32GB is enough for me at this point. It's also an unlocked phone so I can go to pretty much any carrier in Canada and most around the world. Speaking of carriers, I hate Rogers and will not choose their services for a very long time. I may choose Wind, Bell or Telus (and their sub-carriers) as my next phone carrier in September. I'm also in a computer science course where we will start making Android apps from the ground up very soon.
And of course, I had a potato so it's definitely a huge upgrade.
Also the M8 has a shittier camera than the M7, which only tied with N5 because of OIS
take away OIS and it's literally useless
also purpletintbug
Why not a better phone (spec wise) + vanilla ROM + updated ROM?
The LG G2 released in September as well as any 4.4.2 ROMs such as CM or PA are still horribly buggy and with months worth of builds being very unsuitable for daily usage are a poor substitute. It'll be months before the S5/M8 even get decently stable ROMs rolling.
While I'd still opt for a G2, the N5 is still by far the best bang for your buck plain and simple unless you're signing a new contract. The 800 vs the 801 is hardly significant and doesn't warrant the price difference unless you want the phone with the 801 in specific.
I'd honestly pick up a N5 and wait to see how the 3th/4th quarter flagships stack up against the 1st/2nd and sell your N5 to jump ship if you're unhappy. If this year goes any like last LG will come back with a properly good refined phone instead of their first good phone.
Call me naive but I'm a ricer when it comes to computers and the same goes for my phone, I want as much performance as I can so I'm just going with the best specs which seems to be the S5. I will admit Touchwiz is crap and the heartbeat sensor is a gimmick but like I said I can always flash a vanilla ROM, I can't upgrade the processor. Plus I run a lot of emulators so a larger battery and expandable memory is a bonus.
If the Nexus 6 is a better phone then I can always just sell the S5 and get that later. That's what I usually do.
[editline]11th April 2014[/editline]
I'm also renewing my contract so it's just $200.
Do raw specs matter more than the screen, speakers, and camera?
Also, 0.3 ghz difference does not make too much a difference compared to an extra gig of ram, which is what you'd get on the Z2.

I'd say that really varies on the guy buying it. you plan on using the phone as a camera often, then you should probably go for a phone with a good camera. often use the speakers on your phone? then you should probably invest in a phone with good speakers. same goes with specs, gonna play intensive games? etc.

If all these guys were answering honestly it would be because the phone is cheap

Um that's not what a ricer is.

cheap while also being on par with other high end phones for up to double its price

That, nobody can deny

I always thought it was someone who had an asian car that was modified to shit, but according to Urban Dictionary that's the second most common description of a ricer.
This is what has the most votes for Ricer:
(Ricer: from the latin word Ricarius meaning to suck at everything you attempt)
A person who makes unecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster.

It is, but it can extend to nearly anything.

I always hated that Lanboy case, the idea of leaving your components in the elements is just something that boggles my mind.
That makes me think though, could you run your PC in a vacuum? Would that affect operations or temps in some way?
Fucking Dropbox app on my Xperia T breaks all the fucking time. Is there a way to stop it from stopping after a few reboots? It's getting irritating.

I don't think it would be affected by the vacuum, other than for containers like HDD's.
I tried googling it but all I could find was questions if stuff worked in space or why you shouldn't vacuum clean your computer :v:

I imagine there wouldn't be any air for the heat to dissipate to, meaning it'd fry in seconds.

I was in a car ride with some friends, they are all white while I'm the only Asian. They kept on pointing out rice boxes (which I assumed was Asian import cars).

I can't believe this is happening. We need a new thread.
Android Thread - garychencool becomes a Nexus Warrior edition.
Gary's gonna have a better phone than me. Oh god.

Well, there's negative case pressure which is the vacuum that happens when there's more air leaving the case than being drawn in.
[editline]11th April 2014[/editline]
Unless you mean like space in which case idk tie a laptop to a weather balloon see what happens

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think something might be wrong with my battery monitor.
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/PM5HcQ.png[/t]
Either that or my phone has a nuclear battery.
waiting in the att store for an S5, what're some benchmarking apps I should run so I can get some performance comparisons?
