How effective are Android Anti-Malware apps. My brother's phone is infected and so far Avast and Malwarebytes didn't find anything.
Define infected, what is it doing?
I unlocked it to call my phone to locate it, and the browser opened up and it searched "skyim argonian porn" The other tab was a porn gif. I check the download history, and it's downloading R34 and other stuff from all sorts of places. I open up ES File Explorer and find none of these supposedly downloaded images, just folders for adware. He's just a kid. I think I found the apps that are doing this, one claiming to be "Fast Racing", but is like 600 KB when Google Play says Fast Racing 3D is 50MB. A "Gun Builder 3D" at 300KB.
i think your brother is not telling you something
i think your brother is not telling you something
He can't lie for shit, and isn't tech literate enough to clear history. This isn't the first time he got malware on his phone. He had a "Assassin's Creed wallpaper" app that just spammed him with ads. The phone opened these tabs as I was trying to call mine. [editline]3rd May 2014[/editline]
How old is he?!
He turned 13 in November, and hasn't hit puberty. I'm not stupid, my first thought was that he was looking shit up.
and this is why you leave verify apps on
Maybe the ad ware came from the Google play store
Yup, my sister's done the same stuff with her android devices, her phone kept getting these shortcuts on it that were just ads, as well as notifications and shit. The Nexus 7 actually got so bad it bricked it when I tried to update it.
Should have deleted or factory reset before updating
Yeah, didn't really think about that or care. Not like she lost anything valuable or anything.
I just told the electronics store that it wouldn't turn on after I updated, and they fixed it (after they had it in for repairs twice), for free.
can a phone even get bricked when its not rooted? well I mean unless you forcefully interrupt the update process it's bound to be bricked, but other than that, is it even possible? it doesn't sound like it's possible as apps without root access don't have access to system files or anything responsible for it to generally work
I have no idea what happened, really, I just ran the update, and then the installation failed, and Android was corrupted.

So I have a friend that messed up his HTC M8 while trying to Root it. It doesn't boot past the HTC bootscreen. I can't factory restore because it just takes me to the TWRP screen and I can't restore from there. What are my options?
So now that all the flagships have sd card support, we should resurrect the age old question of "what file format do you use". exfat seems like the best option, despite the fact some custom ROMs dont support it (since exfat is licensed by MS)

If you want to put a ROM on it, download the one for his specific model, and flash using TWRP.
FAT32 might stick around because it's compatible pretty much everywhere
I would do that but I can't seem to get my computer to see his phone to be able to transfer files to the phone.
you won't be able to without getting into a ROM which is what you need. like I and otto said, you will have to use that RUU, and then you should be able to flash a factory image in TWRP
FAT32 might stick around because it's compatible pretty much everywhere
The 4gb file limit is awful though. exfat seems to solve that problem but has the same problem as FAT32 when it comes to interruptions. NTFS handles file transfer interruptions much better, but is barely compatible with Android
Exfat wouldn't work natively in Windows xp so people would complain that their card is broken, format it and lose their stuff. And currently all microsd cards come pre-formatted as fat32 except for some 64gb cards as exfat. Ntfs doesn't work natively in Mac os x because Microsoft and Android wouldn't like it
Yeah, I get why FAT32 is still so common, I was just asking which one seems best for individual use cases. I just got my 128gb card in the mail, and I wanted to know which format would be the best.
