I just got absolutely stunned here.
A friend of mine has a Sony Xperia Z.
Yesterday he set up a pattern lock on his phone, but he forgot it.
He asked me for help, and I told him to boot his phone into recovery mode.
I started looking around on Google, found a few pages for doing so, but it was 12 AM and my mom wanted me to go to sleep.
This morning I woke up and continued my search on Google,
to find out that Xperia devices don't get shipped with a recovery pre-installed :pwn:
Note that his phone runs stock firmware and ROM.
Sony, are you mental or something?
So, can somebody explain how to get this thing 'unbricked' in this state? There's not much to do if you don't have a recovery installed on a smartphone.
Couldn't he just unlock it with his Google account?

Use the wrong unlock code like 5 times and it should ask to login with his google account instead.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S4 a good choice swapping from an iPhone 4 to Android? Or is there a better/cheaper alternative that is just as good?
Couldn't he just unlock it with his Google account?
Does that work if your data/WiFi is turned off though? Or does the account unlock turn it on automatically?
Well, it doesn't seem to work with 2-step authentication at least.

If the device has USB debugging enabled then there is a way to remove the unlock. Other than that, if you can't get to the google account reset then you have no choice but to do a hardware factory reset. Upon researching I found this http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-6722 which shows a safe mode but I'm not sure what you can do in it.

Factory reset is no option on this device, which is what I was aiming for to do on this thing anyway.
Sony Xperia devices don't have a recovery shipped..
As soon as he comes online I'll tell him this.
The recent Google+ app update removed opening a Hangouts chat with someone else's profile you're looking at..

oh, every device comes with a recovery preinstalled, otherwise they wouldnt be able to do OTAs. its just not user accessible.
boot the device in fastboot mode and wipe it. thats the only way.
SwiftKey just crashed on my phone. Then the phone locked up, rebooted, and SwiftKey is no longer installed. :pwn:

Apparently you might be able to reset it through Sony PC Companion.
Where get good wallpapers? I have been using Muzei, but I'm not to keen on it. Other live wallpapers I own include anything by Maxelus (Planets Pack, Space Colony), Custom Beam LWP, the parallax live wallpaper. I like things that aren't too busy, but they can be light or dark.
Look around on Reddit, there's a lot of talented people on there (and some weird ones, just avoid them) Personally, I just have Muzei set up to grab pictures from /r/carporn and /r/motorcycleporn
I just downloaded a half dozen walls from wallbase and set it up in Muzei. The blur and dimming is perfect. I don't like when wallpapers are too bright, it's distracting.

Do this, you can completely wipe a phone through PC Companion. Just boot it up and press repair device. Through PC Companion was how I wiped the Z Ultra with the screen completely broken.
I'm still using 500px firepaper

Except how to get that thing in fastboot mode in this state? I don't think that phone does have fastboot capability right now?

Turn it off, hold volume up button as soon as you plug the phone into a computer.

Same
So what's the best Rom for Nexus 5? I'm running cyanogenmod and it almost seems like I have worse battery than on stock.
i'm running purity, it's a damn nice ROM.
Finally I managed to fix the most annoying bug the LG G2 KitKat update produced, the audio crackling through headphones, with a simple trick! [sp]Doctors hate me![/sp]
Apparently G2 TweaksBox had the solution all this time and I didn't know. It's permament too.
Finally I can return to listening music while travelling!
I have a G2 running kitkat and I havent noticed any crackling?

Depends on your headphones and what music you listen to. In some songs I only heard faint distortion, in others it was much noticeable.
I heard it's not very apparent on the original earphones.

Other one that explains the problem better:

In my case the noise wasn't constant but there was highly audible crackling whenever there was low bass in a song.
Mine didn't come with headphones. :C
I have a pair of monoprice earbuds, and I use a monster aux cable in my car. The only distortion i get is from a bad ground somewhere in my car.
the white part of where the microusb port is on my nexus 5 is now darkend up so much
Mine is still a bright, fluorescent red. I love this color.

I'm running PA on mine, and I usually have like 30-20% left after a day at school.

The (eye bleeding) red back is basically the white back but in red right?
When you plug the cable in more times throughout the next few weeks, you'll probably see it get darkened a lot in that area.
