What do I need to set up so I can stream video files from my PC to my tablet? Win7 on my PC and Android 4.4 on the tablet...its a DigiLand DL701Q (yes yes shut up...I was dragged out for Black Friday and figured I might as well get something)
Have you guys been able to connect your phone to a TV and play San Andreas with a keyboard and mouse?
I tried streaming Vice City over wireless to a Chromecast. It worked at a decent framerate (~30). The latency and frame drops were sort of eugh though, but it had no performance impact on the phone itself (which is sort of amazing).
I haven't tried an MHL adapter though.

I've had good luck using Windows file sharing (SMB), with ES File Explorer, and MX Player. At least over LAN. Worked well on a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 2012 over Wireless G.

If your device supports it, I'd recommend using Slimport or MHL for any real fast action gaming. There is always this lag with Chromecast so I stopped using it. However, when I was using Slimport, there was no visible lag. And don't get a shitty adapter, those suck and disconnect from the TV a lot.

How do I use file explorer to view a network? I only know how to make it view the devices internal memory

Noted. Now if only I had a decent sized display with HDMI. Also, can you use USB OTG with MHL. I don't own a Bluetooth keyboard.

Press the Menu button in the upper left corner -> Network -> LAN. Then tap new to add the file server/PC. You just need to know the local IP and the username and password to login (if you require it on the PC). I don't think it can discover them on its own.
Then the files should show up.

It only clones the display so you might as well plug it in and ignore the device display entirely. It doesn't extend the display like on other operating systems. The only main thing to consider is whatever your device display resolution is, is what the output resolution will be to the HDMI and there is no way to edit this (that I know of, maybe Android 5.0 fixed some issues I had with 4.4.4, not sure). You can literally use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse via bluetooth (since OTG wouldn't really work considering the micro USB port would be occupied with the adapter) and forget about touching the device unless important stuff like the nav buttons (back, home buttons) are physical. You can root the device (if root is available) and force on-screen nav buttons, that fixes the hardware buttons thing partially.
Keyboard and mouse support is there on Android but it isn't the greatest. Many things prevent it from being as useful as it could be, but then again it is Android.

I'm trying to follow this guys tutorial http://www.techlife.net/2014/05/how-to-stream-movies-from-your-pc-to-your-phone-or-tablet.html#null
Everytime I try to add my video folder it says server not found. Much like him I'm using AARON-PC/Downloads as a server with my downloads folder shared to everyone on my network
Hold up got it to find my pc on the network but now no password will work including the one for my workgroup
Fixed it....got annoyed and just removed the password for everything.

welcome to the cool kids club
is there anyway to make my nexus 7 (2012) perform better. its performance has degraded alot since i got it years ago.
Girlfriend has an s2 that is fucked and for Christmas I said I would get her a new one. She hates phones and doesn't really use them. What is an okay upgrade from the s2 that isn't too expensive for somebody who doesn't really use their phone

Anything is too expensive if she hates it and doesn't really use it. Give her a walkie talkie instead.

Moto G?
Flip phone is best answer

If all she does is call, get her an old Nokia.

I'd say a moto g for super cheap or a moto x for a bit of a nicer phone.
[editline]30th November 2014[/editline]
They're both on the smaller side which she'd probably like.
She uses it for internet too so can't go for old like a Nokia ha. Mainly wants good battery cause her s2 has to be charged like 3 times a day its so fucked

Try switching to F2FS, there are guides on XDA. It made my N7 feel like new again.

visually it is off. CM11s bug problems woo

My WiFi bugged and requested me to log in and it auto went to my mobile data while waiting for me to "sign in". This is new right?
Also the second delay in changing between data and WiFi is now gone
Android had the notification telling you that you need to log in, in previous versions, but in 5.0 it seems to open a dedicated window just for logging in similar to how it is on iOS devices.

I know it had the notification but it would not let you use mobile while you were connected to the network you needed to sign into

disable wifi
disable wifi
I mean that before 5.0 thats how it worked. In 5.0 it let's you use mobile until you sign in.
Also is it just me or does the text selection work differently in 5.0. It seems to respond differently (in a bad way)

seems to work fine for me and responds very similar if not the same to 4.4.4.
Does anyone make Android phones with ~4.0in screens? That's the perfect size for me but Google only makes the Nexus 6 which is a great phone but way too big for me. I'm using 4.7in and even this is too big for me.

Unfortunately there hasn't been a higher end 4" phone in a while.
Aw that's disappointing. I've been loving Android 5.0 but there hasn't been any hardware to match it for me.
