[QUOTE=GoDong-DK;27898455]I like this very much.. And the fact that you actually have the resources to do this makes me more excited.[/QUOTE]
Thanks for the support! the only thing I need is to draw up detailed designs, with more precise measurements so I can get properly sized aluminium or steel sheets for the project.
This would be pretty damn useful. Our studio has a pair of XServes and a custom PC in an audio rack frankenstiened to work for it. Had casters and an Airport station. We wheel it around to do either heavy rendering or high power data processing. This sounds like a cleaner awesomer version of that. Just make sure you put a wireless N router in.

Thanks.
Anyone wanna help draw up some simple schematics? I suck at it.
[editline]6th February 2011[/editline]
I hate to bump, but is there any good computer modeling programs I should use to use to create a more detailed mock-up? Or should I just start sketching on pencil and paper. Also, does anyone have measurements for the mATX MoBo mount screw alignments?
[QUOTE=Johnbooth;27909084]Thanks. :smile:

What about the mounting hole specifications? And should I go full ATX or mATX?

I just put up a tinychat room. I'll be on quite alot, and can update with ideas in the thread from there.

Go for full ATX, gives you room for upgrades, and more powerful hardware.
The DELL stuff reminded me of the old 'Dude, you're gettin' a Dell' commercials.
Sorry if I completely missed something out, this idea is incredible it looks so cool, but in this situation what are the servers going to be used for?

Ok. Does anyone know the screw hole positions for mounting a full ATx Motherboard? I am planning on drawing up a detailed plan after classes, and probably making a simple mockup out of wood.

Thanks, and at this point I have no idea what the servers will be used for. Most likely just hosting game servers at LAN events. And maybe even more, if my [url=http://www.speedtest.net/result/1146659011.png]upload and download speeds[/url] allow it.

I already saw this stuff. It's no help, because it doesn't give me exact measurements. It gives me this.

Sure about that?

You will definitely want to host a local web server on one of the servers (something like ALP) to organize big LAN parties. ALP is pretty old but there are newer projects like it.

Ah.. I don't know why gameservers didn't cross my mind but that is a capital idea!

Could you please link me to one of those "newer" projects, Trying to find them forever now.

Some guy was writing a updated version of ALP (don't know if he was affiliated or not). There are Joomla plugins out now that add the same functionality as ALP though.
So I am home from classes. I got a piece of wood, and I am starting on the drawer design. I can plug in my webcam, and livestream if you guys want. This isn't gonna be the actual drawer, just a mockup of what it will probably look like. And I'll take comments and suggestions as I am streaming. I am in tinychat, too.
There, streaming.
[url]http://www.livestream.com/johnbooth[/url]
That would actually be really cool, if you set up a stream.
IF you watch the stream, get in the chat
[editline]7th February 2011[/editline]
So I got the holes drilled in the wood, and some standoffs mounted.. But this is just a single mockup, as I will need a total of 30 standoffs for the 3 drawers. If you have any spare, give me a hollar!
I will throw some pics up of the MoBo mounting tray in a bit. And Probably cut it down to size, too. Tomorrow I could work on making the PCI mounting slots for the case. I fear this will be the most difficult!

I know, it looks like crap. But it's a start, right?
[editline]7th February 2011[/editline]
Im getting on tinychat, if anyone wants to talk about ideas for this, or just chat.

Broken thread?
Looks good. Can't wait to see what it looks like in the end.

The funny thing is, I can't wait, either!
Okay so John contracted me to build two builds, a $500 one he would use twice and a $600 one to be used once. I just finished the $500 one, give me feedback, please.

This is WITH 8GB of RAM.

Oops, forgot to add the second pacakge of ram... :-(
[editline]7th February 2011[/editline]
Still good, though.
oh, so it's only 4gb? Well still should be enough for hosting a game server.
eh depends on what your going to be doing - i would love to help with planing a LAN event for seattle! we dont have any good LAN events here
Yes ineedateam1, I would love to help plan a LAN event! I will be back in ~20 mins, and hopefully with more ideas.
[editline]7th February 2011[/editline]
So I'm back.I think a LAN event would be a great summer idea, especially after this server is finished.

tiny chat in OP...

Depends on the game(s) being hosted on it.
But a little too much RAM is always better than a little too less.
