[QUOTE=Van-man;27930401]Depends on the game(s) being hosted on it.
But a little too much RAM is always better than a little too less.[/QUOTE]
so would it be worthwile to exchange the 1090t for a 955BE and get more RAM?
[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
I got a present for you! The 600$ build is more or less complete. It should perform quite a bit better than the $500 one.

Arctic Cooling MX-2 thermal goop: $9
Total w/o shipping: $546
So this time with shipping it will come out under or near $600!
Could I drop the GPU, since this board has integrated graphics? It would also save some work, too.
[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
And have you mailed the standoffs yet?
The board doesn't have integrated graphics, it's an H55 board designed for the Intel CPU's with integrated graphics in them. It should be fairly simple to find a board with integrated graphics for around the same, though.
It will be fine with the cheap GPU, I guess. no worries. and a retoast of the standoffs Question?
not today, sorry. I had a lot of stuff to do.
[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
Also replace the CPU with this: [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117225[/url] the other one doesn't have hyperthreading.

[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
There is 2 things I am asking from you.. one more important then the other. Do you guys have any surplus standoffs? If you do, PM me. And the other is does anyone have a non-working full ATX Motherboard [b]they are willing to part with[/b]?
[sp]For a small shipping fee, or course[/sp]
A: It turns out I do not have standoffs :saddowns: and B: I only have one non-mac motherboard in my house, and that's in my computer, sorry.
Also, I don't think that motherboard is going to overclock well, which is what that Xeon excells at. Correct me if I'm wrong but 'H' class intel chipsets don't overclock well/at all, right?
[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
And replace those HD3450's with the 8400GS, since the 3450 isn't low profile.
don't get a biostar mobo
asus/msi/gigabyte
asrock if you're getting a decent amount more for the same cash as the others
good to know, thanks

For the price it seems great. I didn't notice anything that seemed bad, other than it doesn't say if it supports RAID or not, so you may want to consider a controller if you were planning on a RAID setup (I would recommended for servers)

What advantages would I have from raid? Besides redundancy, if a drive were to fail.
Well he said only 320gb per server, just enough to hold the games and a website or something, I assume, so I don't see the point of a RAID setup.
Speed!
so then a quad RAID of 80gb drives? Well I think we are right into the end of the computer parts budget. It could be done I guess. Is it possible to have a RAID0 of 3 drives then split them into 3 partitions and boot 3 computers from it?
Well if you wanted 320gb per server, you would need at least 2x320gb drives for RAID 0 or RAID 1. That would only provide a speed increase. If you also wanted fault tolerance with the speed increase, RAID 5 would require 4x320gb. Obviously if you are on a tight budget the 2x320gb RAID option is more feasible.
You could get two of these [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136797[/url] without spending a ridiculous amount of money.
RAID isn't something that is going to kill your system without, but it makes a big difference when used in servers.

Okay, but those are incredibly expensive. $70 for 250gb. That's as much as a 1tb Spinpoint F3. What's the advantage?
Those just happened to be the ones I use in my server. I realize the need to stay within a budget. You could be fine with any RAID compatible drive you find for a good price (assuming it's not a crap drive to begin with). You would be okay without RAID, so if you don't want to mess with it then I would just forget it. It can be very beneficial to servers, but it bumps up the cost.
On another note, that Spinpoint drive has half the cache of the WD.
-snip-
I believe I would be OK without RAID. I got and old PSU and sketched that onto my piece of wood mockup, and I will probably cut it down to size, when I find someone that lives close to me that has a spare/broken full atx motherboard that they are willing to give to a good cause.

Raid computer junkyards for old parts to use for test fitting and measuring.

Offer to help people get rid of old computers, or check for people giving old computers away for basically free via Craigslist??

i might just have one but i have no way of knowing if it IS atx
[QUOTE=ineedateam1;27972670]i might just have one but i have no way of knowing if it IS atx[/QUOTE]
Compare against the diagram or lookup the motherboard model number. It should be printed on it.

Any luck with this? I contacted someone on craigslist, but there was no response. They have 5 "towers" available with all "connectors" available.
A couple monitors, too. I might be interested in one of them to mount on the top of the server cart.

Get a picture of the back of them.
If they have 7 expansion slots and the characteristic ATX I/O plate, then they ARE ATX motherboards.
Though it might be a low depth one's, but the diagram I found and posted earlier should help you for when drilling holes for standoffs for full depth ATX boards.
Still no response from the craigslst person. I am getting impatient, as I can not work on this right now. I can only use wood availabe [not much] and I can't get into my dads shop till next weekend, since it will be a four day weekend. What should I try and do? I have plywood, some 1x4's, and a few 2x4's.
Make papercraft servers and have an imaginary LAN party!

There is the craigslist page. Anyone up for calling them up and asking about the specs of the computers?
[editline]10th February 2011[/editline]
I don't have access to a phone right now.
[editline]10th February 2011[/editline]
Anyone doing it? Or am I out of luck till I can get to a phone?
