Since I have nothing to do, I decided to do a final list of the builds I will be purchasing in the (near?) future. I believe everything is in order. If anything needs to be swapped, or I copied things wrong, tell me. And give any feedback on it. hey i;ll call in the morning / noon - what do you want me to ask? [editline]11th February 2011[/editline] Also i have a spare tube of compound you may have so you can remove that from the list It's not ATX
Well what kind of compound is it? Reason I added the MX-2 to the list is so he can overclock the Xeon quite a bit.
Well what kind of compound is it? Reason I added the MX-2 to the list is so he can overclock the Xeon quite a bit.
same stuff- i had ordered 2 thinking 1 tube was gonna be for only one use lol arctic MX - 2 its fresh and un used I dont mind giveing it away
Why an 3450 for a server machine? This should do the job fine (it's the cheapest available on newegg): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500118
Well I told him to swap it out for the 8400GS in the second build but I think he forgot.

Just basic craigslist questions like price, working condition, technical specs, the usual. And how many he has left.
Alright i'll call later around noon
Alright i'll call later around noon
Have you called?
Ok, so I got a bunch of cat5e raw ethernet wire[sp]for free[/sp]. And tonight, I am gonna order a bunch of mod plugs, so I can make custom length ethernet cable for this cart, and use the left over for my room. Just a little update, nothing big. Yet.
Ordered the mod plugs. They should get here wednesday or thursday... I hate to bump, but an updates and update, no matter how small.
I called but noone picked up / has replyed - will re try on monday
I called but noone picked up / has replyed - will re try on monday
I have pretty much given up on that craigslist add. There is (supposedly) a computer recycling plant in everett, and I might check that out today. But I doubt if they will have standoffs.. Maybe I can rummage through their trash for old cases... Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
My dad is coming home from work now. He is gonna run by the used parts store if they're open.. If they are open, I will have an update at about 4:30 (GMT -8) The store closed down.. Fuck me. Is goodwill a good place to look, or is it overpriced? I don't know of any local dumps in the area.. I live in Granite Falls, WA. Anyone know of a good place to start looking? I know I have asked this before and I got craigslist.. But thats not very reliable in my area, as people are more oriented around getting as much as possible for their crap.
Not sure if he would be willing to send you one, but this guy probably has a spare ATX mobo. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1059201-so-i-was-cleaning-my-room...a-tower-of-celerons-commodore-64-12-year-old-toshiba-laptop.
You can usually find great stuff for cheap at goodwill.
You can usually find great stuff for cheap at goodwill.
Thought about it.. But i dont know for prices.. Any help there?
i cannot imagine anyone actually making use of this at a LAN most people find it perfectly acceptable to host off the same computer they're playing on!
Maybe if it's just you and some friends, but if you are at a big event with 50+ people, that's not going to cut it if you are organizing games.
YES! A believer!!
Maybe if it's just you and some friends, but if you are at a big event with 50+ people, that's not going to cut it if you are organizing games.
uh I don't know if you have ever been to a major LAN before(obv not), but yeah, it will definitely cut it. obviously if you're going to be hosting a 64-man server you'll need to install HLDS/the dedicated server variant of the game onto your computer, but any modern computer should be able to run that and play the game at the same time. plus just because the LAN is huge does not mean every server is going to be huge. usually not every person is going to be playing the same game. they will talk to the people around them and probably join up in whatever LAN game presently sounds interesting(many of which either don't support a large number of players or are not fun at all with a huge number of players). ++ if the organizers of the event think everyone will be interested in jumping on one server, they'll probably have boxes dedicated to hosting with them. maybe if you actually own a 1gbit line at home and can use this server when not at a LAN it'd make sense to purchase it.
So... you are saying dedicated servers aren't needed, unless they are needed? But hey, you might want to listen to him [sp]Justin Bieber avatar = credibility[/sp]. In all seriousness, yes, someone could host it on their desktop. Having servers dedicated means admins do not have to give up their desktops to host tournaments, and can spectate.
Ok, I realize this is not 100% credible, but it would still be an amazing project.. Right? OR should I let it stop dead in its tracks? I have some, if not all, resources to do this.. But not 100% of the money for the computer parts. I can definitely make the money, though. Quite a few people are having bad thoughts about this project, but I still think it can be done.
So... you are saying dedicated servers aren't needed, unless they are needed?
except, not? I'm saying some kid wouldn't need to bring his sits-in-the-corner-doing-nothing server rack to a real LAN that might actually make use of it(probably not). hosts of a LAN would provision resources such as this if they deem it necessary. for some reason I doubt John here will be hosting any massive LANs any time in the near future. Is this worth it to continue? OR is soda just being an ass?
Is this worth it to continue? OR is soda just being an ass?
Oh let him have his hissyfit.
That isn't an answer...
