At the store in my town, they had a scale where the bags were, so you just tossed it in a bag and you were done. But it was annoying with big items that didn't need to be bagged. They removed them from that store about a year or so ago, though. Maybe they got too many complaints.
The only place I know of that uses self checkouts like these is Homebase. They are absolute bullshit. It takes more staff to man and fix the fucking 4 self checkouts than it does to man 6 tills.

I guess that's kinda unfair since I work at a grocery store anyway. But still the machine tells you with audio what to do. Although I was using one once and the machine just said "wait for attendant" I did nothing wrong. [editline]15th March 2011[/editline]
We have a winner
Laptops?
Overvoltaging capacitors to make them break exactly after warranty runs out Even though you can some good money from fixing and selling monitors, it should really be illegal
Comic sans. :barf:

The DELL cases that open like a sideways clamshell. They're a bitch-tit to work inside of. :suicide: [img_thumb]http://www.yoolight.fr/lexique-internet/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/dell-dimension-8300_open.jpg[/img_thumb]
I've got two of those lying in my room, and while it may not be the best design, they're far from being difficult to work with. The only thing that is bitchy is the fucking green splat covering the CPU and heatsink. That's a fucking terrible design.

Item scans come up blank, the scales go bonkers and they freeze up, all of which require an attendant to come over with a little magnetic fob and reset it.
One of the old Power Mac models did this, I remember seeing one at my school (they don't update their tech too often) and thinking the opening mechanism was actually pretty cool because it meant you could work inside the computer without having to lay it down first. [img_thumb]http://www.storiediapple.it/wp-content/img/g3aperto.jpg[/img_thumb]
except that doesn't open like the Dell. It actually makes sense.
I agree with this particularly on phones. They make them thinner and thinner when they could just make the electronics slimmer, put in a bigger battery with the new-found free space they've created and make a phone that lasts more than 4 hours on a charge. That and I lost count on how many Razors my little brother's gone through while I had a cheapy "pay as you go" phone for well over 6 years before the charging cable finally broke on it. Seriously, the whole "it's more portable" excuse is stupid considering that it's not a big deal to lose a whole 7 cubic centimeters in your pocket/"man bag". Unless you're one of those trendy douchenozzles that wears skinny jeans. (I didn't know they sold denim in spray-cans these days)
yo i wear skinny jeans their quite comfy don't knock it till you try it
[img_thumb]http://i52.tinypic.com/15n8y0n.png[/img_thumb] Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be fucking shot. How you're supposed to backspace if you actually use the home row keys I don't even know. It's such a pain to backspace even if you don't use the home row keys.
I had to type some stuff at school today, and the keyboards had that layout. I silently planned a complex and brutal series of homicides every time I accidentally mashed the "ù" key whenever I tried to delete a word I had just written. "Well, this essay is going pretty well. Ooops, a mistake, I'll better delùùùùùùùùù someone will die today. Slowly."

It takes more staff to man and fix the fucking 4 self checkouts than it does to man 6 tills.
over here in the US you find them in Wal Mart prevalently, as well as Home Depot and Jewel-Osco [Chicago area grocery, see one in the Blues Brothers movie]. The self-checkouts at one of my local Jewels is awesome, you can buy a whole 12-pack box of ramen for the price of a single packet and it won't catch it. 12 cents can last me a week of bachelor cuisine. :frogc00l:
Jewel is great. I've been down in Chicago about 4 times or so, once for a couple months, so I know them. I'd love a hot dog right about now.
US keyboards have either a large enter key, a large backspace key, but never both... fucking tards designed this shit. >_<
US keyboards have either a large enter key, a large backspace key, but never both... fucking tards designed this shit. >_<
they need to put the [|\] key somewhere
I use a netbook pretty often, so I don't see the big problem with having a small backspace key. Mine is a little longer than the normal length of any other key, and the enter key is just barely shorter than two keys long. It's like this, and it's actually nice. They could just shrink the huge right shift key and put it there, I havent actually seen anyone using the left part of it
Or just put it left of z like in fin/swe layout
except that doesn't open like the Dell. It actually makes sense.
Actually the dell principe makes sense, too. It has to big "buttons" (I really don't have a better word for it) on the top and bottom, so no screws are involved when opening it. It can be opened a good deal more than seen on that picture, and I can see it being useful for opening/locking the case, when you need to repair it fast (another proof of this is that it has hot swappable drivebays). When a design looks inconvenient to you, it's probably because the manufacturer has some kind of purpose with it. Not that you didn't know this, but I'm simply annoyed by people only seeing something from one angle.
I dislike speakers with no weight on them so my cat knocks them over.
Thin and tall speakers are worse with big dogs
US keyboards have either a large enter key, a large backspace key, but never both... fucking tards designed this shit. >_<
I have both.
Pepper;28624015']Thin and tall speakers are worse with big dogs
That's why my old 300w JBL speakers are rectangular, heavy and encased in wood. No force known to man can knock them down. They make the windows shake when they put out some bass. At 1/3rd of the power. [editline]16th March 2011[/editline] Putting them at half of their power would make them try to draw BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD :black101:
How you can't write over the data in your blank CDs if you have already used them For example: My sister burned the same DVD on four of my blank discs cause she kept on losing the DVD, I found the four DVDs, and when I wanted to back up my itunes library (just today actually) *shudders* She's the Man was on there. Now I am stuck with 4 copies of She's the Man.
How you can't write over the data in your blank CDs if you have already used them
get cd/rws, not cd/rs
get cd/rws, not cd/rs
Wow, I didn't know those existed, I feel so stupid now. Thanks for telling me though!
Wow, I didn't know those existed, I feel so stupid now. Thanks for telling me though!
no problem, cd/rws are nifty and it's a good idea to keep them around

So I guess the main purpose was to make a tool-less design for quick repairs and upgrades, since the PCI and AGP slots also just have a latch to hold them in place that just have a plastic release. I think the sliders for the hard drives would be pretty nifty if you had a cloned drive ready and you could just swap it in and have it ready within a minute. The only thing I've seen like it is the case on my old Compaq Deskpro, and the screws slid in on a track and locked in place, and to release, you just pressed a button. Every other case I've used involves screwing the hard drive right into the disk tray.
