No, the problem is that we have no way of making the light stop and reflect at that specific point in place.
I wanna see real physics. Like water on things that evaporate, also realistic drip effects. I especially wanna see things that break differently every time. And all these things put in a game.
I don't care what else they make better, I want nicer grass. Grass isn't meant to be completely flat.
direct brain interface(so it can tell you what to see, hear, smell, even feel) is where I thinks it's going. but that's really far off.

On topic: They need to make physics so precise that materials on destructible objects actually break apart like they would in real life. Also needs detailed and dynamic collision.

In other words, tearing.
Anything can rip, shred, break, shatter, melt, or freeze.
As for realism, we need to involve more senses than sight and hearing; we need realistic force feedback, a way to smell, and even a way to taste. Think of how realistic that would be.
What you guys are describing is much like the physics engine SW:TFU used, not sure of the actual name anymore, but GTA:IV also used a less complex version of it for it's prop physics. There's a technical demo video on Youtube somewhere, it's not to hard to find. It shows realistic, (Or about as good as we can get), tearing of wood, bending, shattering, as well as some other things. If you can find the video, I'll look, it should show up pretty easily.

As for my standing, graphics will always be improving. We'll always find one thing or another to improve the realism factor, and immerse the player further into the game. New, faster, and better looking techniques come up all the time, as well as hardware breakthroughs that allow magnificent advances in graphics.
Just think, about 30 years ago we had:

We hadn't even gone into true 3D by that time, and it was thought to be fairly out of reach. Of course it was being faked by some companies for racing games, but the end effect was quite hard to play with, and wasn't very good.
Now we have:

Far beyond the beginning of true 3D, so many techniques are displayed in almost every new game now. Parallax mapping, real-time soft shadows, softbody/ragdoll physics, vehicle physics, specular and ambient occlusion mapping, post-processing effects, (Such as DoF, HDR, and motion blur), and faked ray-tracing.
I believe the next step is realtime ray-tracing, as it's being so closely developed. It's been done before, (If I'm not mistaken, it took the combined effort of a few PS3s to pull it off), and may not happen quite so soon, but it'll happen.
However, I hope the increasing graphical presence in games doesn't create a larger lack in story-telling and gameplay. In my opinion, if anything should be added besides graphics, it's got to be physics as the others have said. Physics in games such as HL2 help create puzzles and ingenuity, and gives the game a better sense of realism.

I still want them to have a camera mode that is always first person. The mods don't do it justice, because the textures are stretched.

Improved physics and prop/environment destruction is probably what will improve. However, I fear that a game where people can be ripped apart would be banned here in Australia because it wouldn't fall under a MA15+ rating.
What we all know we want is the ability for every object in a game to break dynamically and realistically. Awesome for FPS games, especially on multiplayer. Imagine shooting a water tower with a gun to see a hole form in the steel (with realistic deformation of the metal) and the water to rush out onto the map. Imagine the fun you could have with GMOD and completely realistic water.

Well, the developers could push further the envelope of real time graphics on games for PC like 3 times better than in consoles but they won't because that would be suicide.
What's holding them back are the consoles, but it's not a bad thing since its forcing them to master and optimize all their technologies so they can get the most of them.
AMD is doing a presentation next month showing its new line of Radeon graphics cards supporting DX11, we will see some good looking demos there.
