Same here, about $85-$90 for 16GB of DDR3 1600
My current setup on my notebook now. [t]http://i.imgur.com/3NHio.jpg[/t]
That would be about $100 where I come from, and as a student, I can't afford to upgrade or purchase a new computer, or components for this.
that's the point, you're pretty restricted.
I just started with Arch and XFCE... Any suggestions on how to make my desktop look prettier? I'm new to this. [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/24554595/2012-03-25-003051_1920x1200_scrot.png[/thumb]
Try to match up colors, you have a black desktop background highlighted with a green cord. Change your terminal pallet/xfce4-panel to match, and maybe install some icon themes that are also highlighted with green. anycoloryoulike-icon-theme from the aur makes it easy to get a green icon theme.
I'll try, but I'm not a fan of keeping everything a certain set of colors.
I picked out 3 colors X: Black, White, and Blue [img_thumb]http://bit.ly/GOOtxe[/img_thumb] Tablet & Desktop: Black with Blue led's [img_thumb]http://67.177.47.177/images/IMAG0045.jpg[/img_thumb] Monitor & Keyboard: Black/White with Blue led's [img_thumb]http://67.177.47.177/images/IMAG0046.jpg[/img_thumb] I didn't actually hand pick my hardware colors out, but I think the color scheming is so pretty when it's all assembled.
So do i download the program OR chage the ~/.bashrc file? Can you link me to a beginner place?
if you want archey for debian based systems (ubuntu, mint, debian) then you can use this to download it and install it:
wget https://github.com/downloads/djmelik/archey/archey-0.2.8.deb sudo dpkg -i archey-0.2.8.deb
if you install it on arch linux, you need to take it from the AUR Here's the link: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40420 and here is a small tutorial, on how to install packages from the AUR: LINK when you have archey installed, you can execute it in terminal by typing in "archey" if you want to display the archey informations, when you open up the terminal, you need to edit the ~/.bashrc file. if the .bashrc file doesen't exist in your home directory, then you need to create it first. Then you need to adit the file, and add the entry "archey" somewhere into the file.
Does anyone know how to move the menu bar that has File, Edit, View, etc. onto an XFCE panel instead of it being on the application's window, like Mac OS X or Ubuntu's Unity?
Does anyone know how to move the menu bar that has File, Edit, View, etc. onto an XFCE panel instead of it being on the application's window, like Mac OS X or Ubuntu's Unity?
sounds rather difficult, that would require some rather extensive reworking(though TBH I have no expertise in this area).
sounds rather difficult, that would require some rather extensive reworking(though TBH I have no expertise in this area).
I don't either, actually. However, I found a package in the AUR that allows this and it works perfectly!

Can I borrow someone's dwm configuration please? Thanks.
Replacing Gnome 3 with Cinnamon 1.3 works well. :)
I realize how incredibly late I am replying to this post, but what's Cinnamon like? I do like Gnome, but there is plenty about it I don't like. My GUI is one of the only things I don't like to get into with configuring (which might sound weird coming from an arch user who just loves to spend time setting things up. :v:) [editline]6th April 2012[/editline] I'd really like a GUI desktop environment sorta like what windows has, since that's what I've used up until my switch to Arch. Any recommendations?

You've saved my day once again, thanks!
Does anyone know how to remove the bottom panel in Ubuntu 11.10 with the Gnome Classic desktop? It looks fugly.
I think you can just right-click the panel, then select "Delete panel".
Nothing happens when I right click it, or the top one.
Does alt-right-click work?
You're amazing. Thanks.
might as well post this cuz I have nothing better to do.. Behold, my fugly desktop. The wallpaper is something from the E svn, based on the qlocktwo. Using the solarized color scheme for urxvt..and the shelf at the bottom is set to autohide. The RAM usage is mostly from Steam and Firefox, by the way..without either of those running it hovers around 500mb.
Wrong thread, damn it.
So I had some fun time for the past couple of days with my Linux laptop. I removed all applications that came from the Mate and LXDE repositories so I would have a "clean" ubuntu install again, going back to (the frankly quite disgusting) GNOME classic temporarily. After thinking about it for a bit I installed Cinnamon. Thank God. It looks absolutely beautiful: I changed the colour scheme of Terminal just for this, but I think I'll keep it that way. By the way, does anyone know how to permanently remove repositories from Synaptic? I've removed the repository URLs from my sources.list file and did sudo apt-get update, but they still show up in Synaptic Package Manager and in my packages list (when I use dpkg).
Very nice desktops everyone. I think im gonna be moving to Linux pretty soon. Windows is just to ugly and bloated and im tired of it..
