There should be a rule that you can't post a picture of a default desktop with just the wallpaper changed (which I assume the person is probably just posting it to say, I'm cool, I got Linux, I'm a hipster, etc.) unless it is an exceptionally nice wallpaper :D.

You can even shorten that to Gnome2 + Compiz + Emerald = Invincible. Xfce4 is pretty damn good, but I like having a bit more functionality with Gnome2 (with added resource cost).

For me, it's because it works the way [b]I[/b] want it to work. Windows works, and I encounter less problems on Windows, but that's because I don't get the chance to tinker with things in Windows. If I have a problem in Linux, I generally will be able to fix it either on my own or with some light google-ing.
I use linux on a spare machine because it's nerd fun. In practical use, linux is real nippy-like and is great for devs.

I have more problems in Windows.
I use Linux for productive reasons. Instead of spending lots of time doing some dumb (but required) job in a limited GUI, I can type a command in the terminal and seconds later, the job is done.

Same with me. And the fact that things like libraries and binaries aren't stored the same place makes it hell to develop something on Windows, unless you make your own package manager + repository and storage system (which I did).
When I'm developing stuff on Windows, I usually use MinGW + MSYS to get the job done. Everything else just .. Seems slow and cluttered and .. Not really logical.
Just got Linux Mint, been playing around with themes and stuff.
The theme is Shiki-Wise (included with mint) with my own modifications.
I'm not sure I like the wallpaper, any suggestions would be awesome.

AFAIK it's just the default elementaryOS theme with changed settings for docky and other wallpaper (from the set elementaryOS provides).
I was just pointing that out, it's a really nice desktop anyways, I have a setup close to that too.

Also, I saw this neat command courtesy of [url=http://twitter.com/#!/climagic]this guy[/url] that lets you create a neat fractal background by the command line. There's probably some other things you can do with it as well. It also needs imagemagick to work.

I highly doubt that. I only had the problem once, and it only affected GNOME3 itself. No games or anything was affected, even when the GNOME3 problem you see above was present.
