Expresscard is, however expresscard was never intended to attach high-performance GPUs.
Especially as the NVidia driver checks for a card on startup, if you don't boot with the card in, the card will not work, if you do boot with the card in, you are safe to remove/plug back in again.
There are also things that go on with the pcie address space, which do not bother normal devices but with GPUs with large memory can muck this up.

I think (ok, i'm 100 % sure but cant be arsed to do anything about) my laptop is broken simply because it develops the heat of a smaller star after being used for stuff like wordpad for around an hour or so
