Just wait until both Sandy Bridge and Bull Dozer come out. Then you can know for sure what to get.
Indeed. Best wait to see which competitor has the best price/preformance ratio. *COUGH AMD*.

Eh, I disagree. Intel has very good price/performance. Mainly in the i7 and i5 (quad-cores) series.

Yeah man because the $230 1090T sure is worth it right?
[editline]12th December 2010[/editline]
or the $300 1100T
It has everything to do with what he asked. Prices will drop.
No.
You see, he was talking about the Phenom II X4 965 and Phenom II X6 1055T processors which have nothing to do with Sandy Bridge let alone Intel or even price for that matter. :colbert:

What is your point? Can you tell me this?
Let me ask you something. If someone were to ask you one day prior to the release of some groundbreaking technology, doesn't matter what it is, if they should buy something from the midrange of this generation which actually ends up costing more or something else also from that midrange, would you tell him to wait even though you knew all prices were going to drop and performance records of the previous generation were going to be shattered?

I was referring to Bulldozer vs Sandy bridge.

Well, the new sandy bridges (i5s in particular) they perform as good as the $1000 gulftown, and they are around $200.
Now that is good price/performance ratio.

Well, it's not very surprising if they perform the same in games. Let's see about multi-threaded applications, as the 980x really is meant for that.
Of course in multi-threaded apps regardless of Sandy Bridge or not any i5 will get butt raped by an i7

And that's my point, the i7 isn't meant for gaming, so who cares about that?
I got the 955 and have sufficent aftermarket cooling to overclock. What are some good outcomes with overclocking this cpu?

Speed is the outcome.
with a decent cooler I would expect to hit ~4 GHz
Ive got this

Just go as high as you can without pushing the temperature over 70 degrees
alright i have a asrock 870 extreme3 that comes with a somewhat "easy overclock" feature in which it chooses the clock speed based on predetermined percentages. Should i try using this first? Im not new to overclocking necessarily but by no means am I an expert.

I don't know much about overclocking either, but I think this is pretty simple and helpful
In AMD overdrive you can simply max out the CPU voltage towards 1.50V and increase the multiplier. Play around with it, don't be afraid of a crash.
Here's what we did though. With a simple OCZ Vendetta 2 35 USD air-cooler we reached 3800 MHz 100% stable. If you use a decent cooler or even better, water-cooling .. 3800-4000 MHz should not be an issue. These are very common tweak frequencies for AMD Phenom II processors.

after playing around with this go into the BIOS to make it final

So basically test the settings in windows with AMD Overdrive to verify stabilty, and then make said changes final in the BIOS?
Is it better to raise the multiplier or the Ghz?
I want to say multiplier but I'm not sure
Alright cuz that guide says increase just the multiplier.
X6 all the way
