Sometimes, the wireless will show up as eth(n). When I installed the proprietary Broadcom drivers on my laptop it showed up as eth1. But with the open source b43 drivers (+ closed source firmware) it shows up as wlan0.
So would I un-blacklist the B43 drivers? [editline]08:27AM[/editline]
This is why I just ditched my Broadcom 4311 for an Atheros-based Gigabyte AirCruiser Mach G I found on Amazon.com Sadly, my laptop has a whitelist of compatible wireless cards in the BIOS, so I had to hack my BIOS file with a hex editor to add the card's hardware ID to the whitelist before the laptop would even get past POST. It was risky, but I wanted to use the card I paid for, and it runs like a dream under Linux and Windows (XP, Vista, and 7 work flawlessly).
How could I check if my computer does the same?
So would I un-blacklist the B43 drivers?
Do you have a broadcom chipset? I couldn't tell from the output you posted. If it's an internal chip, post the output of sudo lspci. If it's usb, use sudo lsusb
It doesn't show anything but a series of numbers.
It doesn't show anything but a series of numbers.
Thats what I'm asking you to post.
me@ubuntu:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 058f:6377 Alcor Micro Corp. Multimedia Card Reader Bus 001 Device 002: ID 4317:0701 Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I'm pretty sure its the 4317:0701 one.
From that ID, it looks like you have a USRobotics Wireless MAXg USB Adapter 5425. Is that correct? If so, it has a Broadcom bcm4318 You'll want to use the in-kernel b43 driver, because the proprietary broadcom driver doesn't support the bcm4318. You'll need to un-blacklist b43 like you mentioned earlier, and run:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
I don't have internet access on the install, so how would I get the .deb file from Windows? I still have that VM of 10.04 up too.
There is no dependence on mono, the only default software which uses it is tomboy. Feel free to not use it if you like. DeMudkip: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/b43-fwcutter Also this is cool. http://overbenny.wordpress.com/2010/04/03/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx-boots-fast/ 3.65 seconds for the best boot.
I only dual-boot until two things get ironed out: 1.) Gimp 2.8 gets released. 2.) iPhone/iPod Touch support in Rythmbox. I'm still sucking on the Windows tit because I need iTunes for my iPod Touch, and Photoshop used Single Window Mode, something GIMP 2.8 has. I'm currently running GIMP 2.7.2, and I have my iPod Touch working in my installation of Linux Mint 8 using iFuse and Rythmbox, but I'm still waiting for GIMP 2.8 to be released before I delete my Windows partition and never look back. :h:
I just use Photoshop in a virtual machine.
I used to do the Mini XP in virtualbox thing, but it's a resource hog, killing my battery to fast and making my laptop run too hot.
Watch out for bad gwibber-service CPU usage (the app used for social networking integration). I've been away from my computer for a little over 2 days and when I came back, I noticed that the gwibber-service was using 100% CPU (as was an instance of the Flash 10.1 RC), my fans were working pretty hard, and we've just started to get some pretty hot weather around here (90 Fahrenheit). Not good for my machine :( don't be stupid like me. I just uninstalled gwibber because I find it to be annoying as a built-in feature.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 2 is released!
offical update that fully makes this a hipster distro
Anyone know how to upgrade from beta 1? "update-manager -c -d" isn't showing anything.
Add the beta 2 disc to the Sources list and it will update all packages from the CD-Rom. [editline]03:13PM[/editline]
Updates the OP with new Beta 2 info and links.
What was changed between Beta 1 + Beta 2? I can't seem to find the formal change log.
What was changed between Beta 1 + Beta 2? I can't seem to find the formal change log.
I'm not sure. I know that they are keeping the window buttons on the left side, but they fixed the button order so it mirror's a Mac's layout.
Mine moved to the right. Not sure how.
does Wubi installs beta1 or 2 ?
Mine moved to the right. Not sure how.
Same here, but I like it better that way, anyway.
does Wubi installs beta1 or 2 ?
Who cares? No self-respecting person would use Wubi if they were serious about installing Linux.
Who cares? No self-respecting person would use Wubi if they were serious about installing Linux.
Sure is helpful around here.
Who cares? No self-respecting person would use Wubi if they were serious about installing Linux.

sed s/Wubi/Mint/

Who cares? No self-respecting person would use Wubi if they were serious about installing Linux.
1. I have no self respect 2. Boot CD crashes at installation so does USB and network install
1. I have no self respect 2. Boot CD crashes at installation so does USB and network install
Carry on. :buddy:
1. I have no self respect 2. Boot CD crashes at installation so does USB and network install
Did you use the same iso for each? It may be corrupted.
Anyone else get the irony of a Beta for a long term support product? I know it's necessary but still kinda funny,
Did you use the same iso for each? It may be corrupted.
No i din't
So, we have a week until the release. I'm loving this update.
