How do you install custom tiles and where do you get them?
I am loving Windows 8. [editline]26th June 2013[/editline]
How do you install custom tiles and where do you get them?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1899865
Oh and if you install the preview version, you'll lose your installed apps when you install the final version.
Includes desktop programs I assume?
Includes desktop programs I assume?
Yup.
for x86-based Windows 8 systems, testers will need to reinstall both their Windows Store/Metro-Style and Desktop apps, a Microsoft spokesperson said.
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-goes-public-with-windows-8-1-upgrade-policies-7000016419/
So when is the preview coming?
Sometime later today when Build starts. Edit: If you want to try the preview and upgrade to RTM, make a recovery image of your current Win8 system with recimg and restore the image once RTM is out.

It creates a backup of Windows 8, installed applications, and other files on your drive, not including your user accounts. If 8.1 doesn't make any major changes in user profiles, you can replace the install.wim(Or whatever the file is called) on a recovery disk with the newly created backup to refresh your device. If you want a simple GUI, just go here.
Oh i just put a fresh install on Windows 8 on here so i dont have hardly any apps installed so its ok for me.
Yup. http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-goes-public-with-windows-8-1-upgrade-policies-7000016419/
Does this apply to programs installed on other HDDs, or all programs, full stop?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/download-preview Hurry up, dammit!
What a shame, apparently "The update is not applicable to your computer". I was actually looking forwards to the update, I wonder why it's not applicable to my computer.
What a shame, apparently "The update is not applicable to your computer". Yeah I'd say it's the same fucking issue that RSAT had at launch, it'll only let you install on EN-US systems and not EN-GB
Installing now
I installed the update and restarted, but nothing happened after that.
uhhhh
You might unleash Satan if you install that.
You might unleash Satan if you install that.
It's too late
I've had 7 Ultimate x64 since '09. with the release of 8.1 I have an opportunity to purchase and install. Would it be worth it to move from 7 to 8?
I've had 7 Ultimate x64 since '09. with the release of 8.1 I have an opportunity to purchase and install. Would it be worth it to move from 7 to 8?
I think its a nice experience. It has cool apps and faster boot time. Plus the new features are nice.
Does this apply to programs installed on other HDDs, or all programs, full stop?
I don't have more specific information, but here's what I'm guessing (based on upgrades between other versions): All of your data on your Windows volume, including program files, will be transferred to C:\windows.old. But the registry will be wiped, meaning those programs won't be "installed". Program files on other volumes won't be touched, but once again, they won't be "installed" anymore. So you will still have to reinstall every program that needs a registry entry (programs that are "portable" or "no-install" will still work fine.)
I think its a nice experience. It has cool apps and faster boot time. Plus the new features are nice.
Ive gotten hands on with it before, and it seems like it would be worth it, I'm just a stubborn and hesitant bastard when it comes to a switchover like this. I just need that little push that will either convince me, or prevent me.
Im now on 8.1 and none of my apps, installed things or files were removed or touched.
Im now on 8.1 and none of my apps, installed things or files were removed or touched.
yeah, they won't be touched until 8.1 officially comes out
Im now on 8.1 and none of my apps, installed things or files were removed or touched.
Yeah, they won't be now. It'll happen when you try to "upgrade" from 8.1 preview to 8.1 RTM.
Oh i thought it was the preview that did that.
Oh i thought it was the preview that did that.
going to the preview is the easy part its getting off it where microsoft DEMANDS you do a clean install and does everything in its powers to do so.
This seems a tad risky. I'm afraid to lose anything I installed
This seems a tad risky. I'm afraid to lose anything I installed
then don't install 8.1 until it actually releases. if you already did, lol too late
