Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

That's strange, when I go to upgrade using the iso I don't get the option to keep apps

Is this some dumb en-us / en-gb thing again or am I missing something

No, for me there was an option above "Keep personal files only". I upgraded from Windows 8 Pro 64bit using the Windows 8.1 64bit ISO.
Turns out there's a fix here, you essentially force en-us: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1_pr-windows_store/the-windows-81-preview-isnt-available-right-now/274c3506-19f8-4bc1-ae32-9f35e855915b?page=2
Why would I even...

you are the worst
I'm thinking for windows 8.1 is there a way to disable all the corner shortcuts?
it gets annoying when I move to click the X quickly and the charms bar pops up and blocks it
the charms bar is useless to me anyway

How does it block it? Mine just shows the icons, but I can still click the X.

Yeh, it is only once you move the mouse over the charm bar icons it blocks you,
Looking at getting a win 8 tablet with a digitizer pen. Been looking at the surface pro, does anyone know of any other decent tablets with digitizers. I looked at VAIO Duo however it has no where internal to store the pen and having all the cables exposed on the side when its on keyboard form sort of puts me off. (Cap is £900)
Oh my lord I should have read into the 8.1 changes some more
I only realized that the start screen synced after mutilating it from my laptop, now my nice tidy menu is irreversibly destroyed and until I can figure out how to disable the sync, it is going to look horrible on one device at any given time

Oh good it's in skydrive settings, my start menu shall be salvaged yet

get the surface
No! If you can wait a little while longer the 2nd gen Surface should be right around the corner for the release of 8.1
I'm in the uk and if anything Microsoft won't releace it here till next year we only just got te original surface so I can't see surface 2 being any time soon
Microsoft would be stupid to not release a Haswell Surface, and Haswell is absolutely worth waiting for.
I'm wondering why nobody, including Microsoft, has released a good desktop touchscreen... I mean, honestly, if you're marketing a touch-compatible OS, the least you can do is offer a Touch-compatible screen.
Sure, Dell and Acer have theirs, but they're $400+ each, and neither are that great (Although Dell's looks very, very professional. And fancy.)

Because touchscreens are much worse than a keyboard and mouse for desktops.
I'd love to have a dual monitor solution with one touchscreen
Some things would be cool with it

That wasn't the question, though. And, arguably, they're also worse than a keyboard and mouse for laptops, but yet the touchscreen laptop market is booming right now.
I'd never use a touch-screen monitor for my desktop. Ever. It seems like a pain to reach across and touch the screen, rather use a keyboard and mouse.
It makes more sense on mobile devices. Zero on home devices, imo.

Make a small touch screen monitor close by, next to your key-board and mouse. I could definitely get into that, if anything.
Is it worth it for me to get Win8 for just a Desktop machine. All I do is game really and I wasn't sure about the move.

If you can get it for cheap. I don't think the Windows 8 improvements are worth the full price.

Oh, we seem to have had a misunderstanding. I didn't mean as a primary monitor, or even a secondary. I meant something that could be lain slightly angled on a desk and used as an optional input device.
Sorry about that, guess I should have specified.

I was going to say. There isn't really a market for touchscreen desktops on the primary monitor. Or at least, I can't imagine there is. Only time I can think of touchscreens being useful on the main monitor is on PoS machines.
I think Wacom makes something along the lines of what your thinking of. But once again, expensive.
Good touchscreen monitors are pretty pricy. Probably due to the cost of the monitor plus the touch-sensitive mesh. And the fact they are sort of niche products.

I could see it if they offered functionality other than just being a touchscreen, but when you can sell an All-in-One PC with a really good touchscreen for $500, or the price of a touchscreen the same size itself, there's something wrong there... Either a supply chain disconnect, or manufacturing processes, or just a ridiculous markup. You shouldn't be able to buy an entire computer for the same price as said computer's screen in a different box.

$500? The cheapest I've seen is about a grand (monitor/pc set). Granted, I don't really look for that sort of thing so you might be right.
Though, I'm sure there is some fudging with the pricing because its a niche product.

This is what I'm going off of... The capacitive ones go for $600+.

I took your idea and made my own. :v:
I'd love to have a side touch screen to use Metro apps in
Just switched from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, and I regret it greatly. I had thought MS were going to change some stuff significantly in 8.1 and I feel like it's still just as bad. The start menu is still some giant home screen and there is no obvious way to obtain the useful startmenu which existed in operating systems prior. Switching back to Windows 7.

Well, yes, that's kind of the point... You didn't seriously think they were just going to scrap the whole thing and go back on two years of work and PR, right?
Besides, the start menu's not that bad. Between it, the desktop, and the taskbar, I have no troubles launching programs. It just takes some time to get used to.
