Just switched from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, and I regret it greatly. I had thought MS were going to change some stuff significantly in 8.1 and I feel like it's still just as bad. The start menu is still some giant home screen and there is no obvious way to obtain the useful startmenu which existed in operating systems prior. Switching back to Windows 7.
oh no your life is over your start screen is bigger what ever will you do!!!!!!!!!!!!! you use it for 3 seconds, please stop what possible feature is missing from the start screen
you use it for 3 seconds, please stop what possible feature is missing from the start screen
The only real issue with the start screen is that it arbitrarily splits/removes results compared to the start menu Something i doubt he got the time to notice before "muh start menu"
Apparently Microsoft canned WEI in 8.1? Can anyone confirm?
Apparently Microsoft canned WEI in 8.1? Can anyone confirm?
I hope so... That was a piece of crap.
been using 8.1 for a while, the search is SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER it's crazy, that and some minor UI clunkiness were my main complaints about W8 also afaik WEI has been ditched, can't see any evidence of it in the system panel
Apparently Microsoft canned WEI in 8.1? Can anyone confirm?
I wouldn't really be surprised since no one uses it for it's original purpose. Though if true I hope they only remove WEI and not WinSAT.
I wouldn't really be surprised since no one uses it for it's original purpose. Though if true I hope they only remove WEI and not WinSAT.
What was its original use? Minimum computer requirements? Showing 'how good' a computer is when being sold?
What was its original use? Minimum computer requirements? Showing 'how good' a computer is when being sold?
A quick and easy way to tell a computer's performance, and for games and software to have a minimum and recommended WEI score. The games and software stuff is what I was referring to mostly there.
It wouldn't be a terrible metric if it didn't base the number off of the lowest performing component. Explaining to people that a slow performing disk would reduce system responsiveness, and integrated graphics are not ideal for playing games would have been great, on top of averaging out the scores with some sort of formula.
The response to 95% of Win 8 issues for new adopters is Classic Shell. Seriously. You'd think people would at least google before going on the internet and bitching about a self-imposed re-format.
Cotulla, the guy that ported Windows RT to the HD2, is now buying an HTC One for development As a reference:
What is the minimum requirements for Win8RT? Maybe I could get on a GalaxyS1 or S2 for the hell of it.

That was a very insulting way of saying "get used to it!" Why should they when they don't need to? I mean, the absolutely could, no denying that. But i can't yet. I might, but not for the foreseeable future. I'm sorry, but whoever doesn't think Metro is clunky as hell can't ever be taken seriously when calling anything else clunky. It's a full-goddamn screen to accomplish what you used to do on 1/10th of it. When you're sitting at a 26" monitor, you don't want your start menu alternative to come with obligatory full-screen mode and huge 240 size fonts screaming at you. That's huge and clumsy.

I really want a tablet to fully enjoy Windows 8, but for a desktop, Metro is negligible.
also, why does classic shell remove breadcrumbs? they're basically the up button on steroids
Because the creator of Classic Shell is a die hard Windows XP fanboy who does nothing but troll the comments section of Neowin articles and thinks anything post Windows XP is an abomination. I would highly suggest using something else.

It also has win 98 skin for actual autists. [editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
Yeah I guess it can be a touch annoying on a desktop, but I never use it. Unfortunately, what it's obligatory on isn't tablets... It's desktops. The "buttons" to click are so goddamn huge that you could lose the curser in them.

Would I need a disc for this if I just want to wipe all of my files and have a fresh start?
This is gonna take some getting used to. On top of that I have to find and delete all the bloatware ASUS packs in.
Would I need a disc for this if I just want to wipe all of my files and have a fresh start?
No, you won't need a disc. But I think it takes a really long time for it to be done, so get your patience ready.
Is it possible that Windows 8 would be running worse than Windows 7? My brother says that on his low-end notebook (1.4 dual core cpu, 2 gigs of ram and Radeon 6310M) he could watch HD videos without any problems on 7, while on 8 they stutter.

You could check those settings as well. But no, it doesn't make sense that Windows 8 should be slower.

Can anyone on 8.1 tell us a bit about the search? Is it improved? How did they change it? Does it actually give results outside of metro now?
Can anyone on 8.1 tell us a bit about the search? Is it improved? How did they change it?
If this is your last resort then i guess do it but if not DONT. It takes fooooooorever.
Going to put my hard drive into a new computer, so I'm going to wipe it via this feature.
