Ok so when i put things in fullscreen on my second monitor it cuts half of it off. Any ideas why? I can get a picture if you need one.

This happens on my laptop. AMD Graphics?

Nvidia.

Mmm, weird. I am unsure if mine is a hardware or software problem. Do you have dual graphics? The cutoff only happens on my laptop's dedicated graphics, but works fine on the integrated graphics. Happens in HDMI and VGA. Cursor draws on the "broken" half of the screen, but context menus and everything else doesn't. Sound like your problem?
As much as I like Windows 8, I have one infuriating issue with it that I cannot find a fix for.
If a program hangs and the only way to close it is via task manager, it'll shit out an access denied error. I'm a local admin with the UAC turned off. This never happened in Windows 7. So now if Java is stuck and raping my memory with its leaky ass or killing floor gets stuck and I can't relaunch it the only way to fix this right now is to restart.
What is with this? Any fix? I've tried right clicking it in task manager and manually giving me full control over it there was well, still no luck.
I've even tried using the older version of task manager to see if this new one was broken. Same problem so it isn't that.

Same problem with taskkill...

I really can't think of any reason why that would happen, could you try it with UAC on? I wouldn't think it'd make a difference but it's worth a shot.
Yeah, I imagine there is something wrong. That shouldn't happen at all.
Got myself Win8. I'm impressed and I like it alot, but is there any other place where I can download apps and install them without using the store? It's really empty compared to the other stores like the Play store for example.

Not officially, that's by design. Its possible if your a developer, or after reading a MS blog post, to sideload them using PowerShell. However I can't think of any non-MS repositories that contain apps.
With Windows 8 whenever I shutdown my computer I find that task manager also includes this as part of its system up time. Booting to the desktop is a little bit quicker than usual though. It seems to do this often pretty much often now. I'm running the OS on an SSD with a HDD as secondary storage if that helps. What's up with that? This never occurred before.

Just found out that this is a result of the feature called Fast Start-up. It seems to be ticked under power options but I don't recall having this kind of problem with it. Still keeping it enabled though.
i have two bugs with windows 8.1 - first I can't seem to add shortcuts to exes to the start screen, it comes up with an error message
second my USB 3.0 ports seem to stop working every time I restart my PC and the only way to fix it is to uninstall my 'xhci root hub' and then scan for harware changes again in the device manager which fixes it until the next restart
report it to microsoft

Mine does that too. Uptime keeps going because the OS isn't fully shut down, it just logs you out and then the system hibernates. And obviously run time keeps going until its actually shut down or you restart.

I had the first one because at first I upgraded to Windows 8.1 through the store. Now after a clean install it works as it should and I can pin anything again.
Are there any tumblr apps for W8 that aren't complete dogshit? Or does tumblr have plans to make one?
Is there anyways I can make search default to everywhere in 8.1 I'm getting really tired of this file search shit.
[editline]28th July 2013[/editline]
Oh shit I can use Windows+Q for that, interesting...

it defaults to everywhere for me anyway?
Was thinking about getting a Surface RT for basic college stuff. It'd also be much more portable than my laptop.
Does anyone here have one? Pros/cons etc etc
I don't have one, but they're old, running slow processors, and a refresh is likely right around the corner.
You'd probably be happier with something with an actual x86 processor.

I personally would never own an RT tablet, I need desktop apps
The reason I want the RT is really only for the portability and the use of office programs while I'm at university.
I have my laptop and it's very nice and powerful. However, it lacks the portability I like for me to take to class and use alongside my lectures. I'd mainly be using a Surface tablet for notetaking in class and using it outside of class for papers or what have you. It'd be much easier to carry 1.5 lbs over 5.5 lbs.
RT is really cheap compared to what I paid for my laptop ($1200) so money is kind of an issue. I would get the Pro if I had the money, but the thing is: I don't.
I'm definitely waiting to see if a new Surface 2 or whatever comes out. I probably won't be getting it until next semester anyways.

I wouldn't count on it. That, and I don't trust tumblr with apps, looking at the WP8 app that always freezes up my phone. For the time being, just have it open in IE, I suppose.

You know, and I hate to be the guy who brings this up in a Windows 8 thread, but have you maybe considered an iPad?
A lot of college bookstores sell them at a discount to students, they've got a ridiculous battery life, and all the usual notetaking applications (dropbox, evernote, even Microsoft Office) are there.
The functionality's comparable to that of an RT out of the box, but you've got a bigger selection of applications (if that matters to you) than you do on RT. From some tests I've done on store demo devices, the iPad seems a bit smoother and quicker in the UI and App Launches.
Didn't mean to come in here sounding like an Apple fanboy, and I apologize if I did. Just thought, given the circumstances surrounding the Windows tablet, you might consider another option.
Touch/Type covers are really a selling point. Same with USB and SD slots.
I'm not a big app person either.

Personally I would never use the iPad for notetaking because of the fact it doesn't support multiple windows, rendering it somewhat useless for research.

I consider iPads worthless and just being blown up iPods. They're not really good for anything but internet surfing or playing games in full screen, you've still got the same restricted iOS setup. I've used my mom's a few times and the bigger keyboard is nice but it's a very awkward device to hold and I can't do anything useful on them.

Here's an interesting article about tablets for school usage: http://www.zdnet.com/omg-theyre-using-windows-rt-7000018596/
Very good points, both of you. I'd have to disagree on the "only good for internet surfing or playing games" bit, though. With a decent Bluetooth keyboard, I've churned out quite a few papers on mine. (They get synced to my Office account, so I can print them from my desktop.) The touch keyboard is crap, but most touch keyboards are... But that's all subjective.
Still yet, I think if you're doing research and things, then maybe having the ability to dock two windows side-by-side, like you can on an RT running 8.1, would be more efficient.
EDIT: That's an interesting article. I can see the applications.
Is there an ETA for 8.1 ? I've came back to Windows 8 cause my windows 7 install was fucked

Late August, September or maybe October most probably. It'll (hopefully) be RTM in August, but I don't know whether the update will be pushed out at the same time.

It's hard to screw up a tablet where simply typing up a paper is difficult to do. However, the multitasking, as Noss said, feels better on Windows 8 devices.
