• Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

I'm looking for a laptop for college. In what ways is W8 better than W7 and in what ways is it worse? (it might be worth noting that I don't plan on getting a laptop with a touchscreen) Also, can someone give me a brief rundown of what's new with 8.1?
I find Windows 8 boots in a matter of seconds (single digits) while my Windows 7 installation took close to a minute, maybe more. Windows 8 also seems to use less RAM (I can boot using 800MB, I've never seen anything below 1.4GB on Windows 7). I think it's a huge improvement over Windows 7 and there's no real reason not to get it with a new computer unless you're going to bandwagon and bitch that the "START MENU IS GONE", but really, it's a screen you use for 4 seconds.
The lack of aero can also be a bummer for some people. Personally I preferred the pre-release version that had the ugly rounded corners removed but still kept the transparency. If you didn't like aero the Windows 8 theme looks much better than Windows 7 with aero disabled imo.
8.1 boots up way faster than 7 for me. And using the second monitor for netflix or using the weather channel is super useful.
I've been using Windows 8 for 1 day now, and I was pretty frustrated at first, but now that I've learnt everything I'm loving it. The most difficult thing for me on this laptop was figuring out how to get into the damn uefi. It boots incredibly fast, even with a 5400rpm drive and its running decently well even with 2GB RAM (for some reason the laptop came with half it was supposed to - amazon gave me a $70 refund which I have purchased 8GB RAM with though! So I'm still happy about that). The new file transfer thing is incredible. Really happy with it, the nay-sayers are silly whining about change. Does 8.1 come out soon? Is there any way to get the preview without using an iso?

The Netflix app in particular is much better than using the website since the terrible Silverlight player they use is not hardware accelerated.
The one thing I don't like is the new sounds, but I'll get used to them. I was going to complain about not being able to press win then run whatever, then I remembered win+r.

I havnt had any problems with it.
the only negative thing with win8 i find is the god damned location of the power button
the only negative thing with win8 i find is the god damned location of the power button
It's on your tower, dingus. [sp]I know you meant in the OS, I was just making a joke :V[/sp]

Windows 8 is about the same price, if not cheaper that W7 right now and i'm considering getting it for a new build of mine. Is it worth it?

Well i'm a sucker for progress.
the only negative thing with win8 i find is the god damned location of the power button
Windows + I, it's on the bottom of that menu. That menu is "settings" in the charms bar.
I've always just done alt+f4 on the desktop. It works on Windows 8 also.
I've always just done alt+f4 on the desktop. It works on Windows 8 also.
Yep. Works on pretty much every version of Windows ever.
Windows + I, it's on the bottom of that menu.
I've always just done alt+f4 on the desktop. Especially shameful since I use keyboard shortcuts for absolutely everything else
Everytime I search Windows 8 locks up for a bit. Is there any way to clear the search or the apps? It's really annoying when I type something in main menu and it lags.
Windows 8 is about the same price, if not cheaper that W7 right now and i'm considering getting it for a new build of mine. Is it worth it?
Look on ebay for there daily deals. I got Windows 8 Pro for $40
I've always just done alt+f4 on the desktop. It works on Windows 8 also.
I used that all the time on every program. But for some reason, Game developers got retarded and decided that it shouldn't work because "What if they didn't mean it!" I really miss not having to go through several menus and obligatory loadscreens to shut down a game. Now i have to CTRL+ALT+Del and then terminate the process. No different than ALT+F4 so why in all fuck...

My main qualm with win8 is that I can't run it on my thinkpad which would see the most benefit because it's not compatible with PAE while my computers that are otherwise completely fine with win7 can all run it rage hopefully once I get a new laptop I can enjoy touchscreen win8 in its full glory

Finally had a need to use that new boot loader. Except only to get a headache as to how shit it really is. Needed to boot into Safe Mode, had to boot into Windows, select "Advanced Startup", reboot, go through the screen and select Startup Settings, reboot again and then select Safe Mode. Why does this require 2 reboots? Why was it so important to make the boot time 100ms shorter and take away the ability to use the F8 key?
Welp... somehow got a virus on my computer for the first time in like 15 years - it just kept downloading random shit. I have no idea how, as I had up to date virus protection, and didn't download anything sus at all. I'm so confused. Anyway, decided to bid goodbye to Windows 8, as I just can't get used to the start screen on a desktop computer. Back to Windows 7 for now. Maybe 8.1 will be better.
I dreamed I got a virus earlier today while I was taking a nap. Dreamt somebody hacked my Xbox profile and it somehow transferred to my PC through my television. I also dreamed I was at a beach, but the beach was indoors, and had painted walls to look like cliff faces... And the only way to get to the beach was a set of really creaky rope swing things that stood fifty feet off the ground. I have weird dreams.
