Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

Plans change I suppose. I'd rather they took their time.
Now that 8.1 fixes many of the issues with the start screen, I'm hoping Windows 8.2 version 6.4 will have some more desktop oriented features.
Shit, wasn't the first estimated release date suppose to be August?
RTM in August, it's not surprising that there's a gap. My first guess was September/October, so it fits quite well.

Really, "all" I'm hoping for is proper DPI scaling, and if they can cook something up, even better window management.
It'd be nice but I can't imagine the shitstorm that would ensue in Sensationalist Headlines.
You mean the "they added start screen support with xbox controller support when they could have been working on a start menu!!!!"
Been enjoying my surface, learn't not to buy a cheap mini displayport to hdmi adapter, cuts out on me every minute or has blue lines scrolling across it

Yeah, so, like the exact shitstorm happening right now in Sensationalist Headlines.

Interestingly enough a 4th DPI was added to the msstyles in 9471. So something with DPI scaling might possibly be changing. Either that or just disappointment.
yeah i got it, it's fucking awesome
is there any chance you could tell me how Paint tool Sai works on the pro? i have been considering one as a secondary mobile device/portable graphics tablet and it'd be great to carry it around instead of an intuos.

I am not Ezhik with a Surface Pro, but it is Wacom technology so it's probably fine.
is the 'Remove everything and reinstall Windows' setting as good as reformatting and installing from scratch?
is the 'Remove everything and reinstall Windows' setting as good as reformatting and installing from scratch?
Should be.
First time I reinstalled Windows 8, and now it shows my bios logo when I load windows. Since when did windows do this? I did upgrade from 7 last time, so that might be why it didn't last time, just freaked me out when it loaded slow, like the disc didn't burn correctly.

And then, I remembered this... God damn it, wasted my last DVD for nothing......

Windows 8 shows the logo of the OEM when booting.
installed 8.1 preview yesterday, shit's killing me
[I managed to fix this first issue by disabling a bunch of shell extensions]- attempting to open file explorer directly will crash explorer.exe and the graphics flicker to show my windows scheme color for a second, then reload my wallpaper. However, if I open it by trying to open a specific location (from recent locations list or a desktop shortcut to a folder), it opens fine. Furthermore, if I right click an individual file it acts normal but if I right click a folder with files in it, explorer.exe explodes.
Second problem, similar to the first (and becoming more prevalent today)- if I hit the start button and begin typing a program name, it can take 5-10 seconds for the search list to actually display results. New issue today though, if I hit the start button and begin typing immediately (like I've always done), it can overload and just kill explorer.exe again. I have to wait a second or two for my tiles window to show up, sometimes it dies flat out when I hit the start button. ALSO, when I begin typing, it lags then gets the order messed up. for instance, I rolled my fingers (in order) along ASDF and it gave me this

then I very carefully pecked out 'fuck' really fast and it messed up entirely

I also lost a good number of programs from my start menu, and trying to re-pin them gives me an error that there's no program associated with the type of file

the only advice I've found (outside of the shell disabling) has been to update my graphics drivers to the 8.1 preview version, but that has only presented me with the start menu crashes

What the hell is this? Is this some kind of joke??
This whole thing MS is doing with windows 8 reminds me of mass effect 3 extended cut.

In the case of this, it's not like they knew people would react massively negatively to some of the changes. Most of them aren't actually bad after all. This is just including stuff to try and shut people up. Less as damage control. They can't know what people don't like until the OS is out there. Bioware should have known the ending would annoy people :v:
Why not just put "Shut Down" and "Restart" on that main dropdown? Why hide it under a sidepanel?
That's just making things unnecessarily complicated.

Because there's more than two options depending on settings. Sleep, hibernate, restart, shutdown. It extends out exactly like it did in the start menu. As useful as the Win+X menu is, just a generic context menu feels a bit half-assed.
I'd rather they call it "Power" than "Shut Down", just because it has another sub menu called the same thing...looks weird

I guess my point is its out of character for MS to be doing this. They've never really cared about what people think so why the sudden urge for damage control? This OS was destined for failure anyway, its part of the circle of life in MS land.
98 - Good
ME - Shit
XP - Good
Vista - Shit
7 - Good
8 - Shit
9 - Probably good
It's also part of the circle of life for people to trash an OS using a cycle that deosn't even account for 2000, or 98SE, or how OSes ended up after service packs.
ME was probably the last truly shitty Windows iteration. Vista had a rough start, but was never horrible. Windows 7 was just better.
Microsoft has always been the sort to "try first, fix later."

But Windows 8 isn't shit?

Cept 2000 was mainly designated for business use, I'm more talking about the OSes meant for general consumption. 98SE was still technically 98 just as much as 8.1 is still 8.
Your "try first fix later" statement just reinforces the validity of the list I posted...

sorry but it doesn't work like that
Where's 2000 and 98SE and XP MCE and XP 64-bit etc?

Windows 8 isn't shit either way because it still improves on Windows 7 under the hood. Just because you think the new Audi is ugly doesn't mean the engine is any worse, either, and guess what! Lots of people out there like the new Audi!
Windows 2000 is an operating system for use on both client and server computers.
Again, it was designated for business use...doesn't mean you had to be part of a business to buy or own it.
FYI client just means the end-device like a workstation or PC while server means the device hosting services. It's not like client = consumers and server = businesses.
Windows 2000 Professional was designed as the desktop operating system for businesses and power users.
Just shut up and quit shitting up the thread with your fucking terrible opinion.

98SE is still technically 98, however 98 is still technically 95 and ME is still technically 98SE by the same logic that 8.1 is 8. Windows 95-ME are all Windows 4 (95 - 4.0, 98 - 4.1, ME - 4.9), so if 4.x can be separated, why can't 8.1 or SE?
Also you say XP is good however it was widely considered to be not that good until SP2. Vista too was considered shit until SP1. So how come you're using XP's reputation after it was no longer new and Vista's reputation when it was new?
And I love how people always remove Windows 2000 just to make this ~pattern~ work. Despite the fact it was highly popular on home computers as well as business computers.

Why don't you just use Windows key + D and then ALT + F4 and select shut down using the
arrow keys? That's the fastest way I shut down my laptop at school.

Win+X and arrow keys would be quicker.
