You wont.
Thanks for the list kaukassus, I'll stick with it. People need to start making more themes for 8.

You won't, I just really like aero.
You'd think they wouldn't pull this crap, considering every Sandy/Ivy processor has automatic overclocking enabled BY DEFAULT.
Come on, Microsoft. Do you have any idea what the chip suppliers even do?
Is this problem related to the clockspeed weirdness I get in the task manager?

DWMLoader will have 8.1 support to bring back Aero soon. And UxStyle will be available for 8.1 soon also.
WSB already has support for theming 8.1 so really there just needs to be a UxTheme patcher now.

- Skydrive integration (if you use it)
It's no fancy integration. It just comes with it preinstalled.
It's no fancy integration. It just comes with it preinstalled.
in 8.1 it will have automatic system backups to skydrive
plus adding 20gb to your skydrive account is 10 bux a year so there isnt much of a excuse to not do it.
Anyone heard much about the second-gen Surface Pro with Haswell? I hope it comes out for the end of the year, I'm keen.
Anyone got any strong opinions (for or against) regarding the Surface Pro? I'd like to hear them before I buy.
Anyone got any strong opinions (for or against) regarding the Surface Pro? I'd like to hear them before I buy.
My dad just bought a Surface Pro like a week ago. He's not good with technology at all (almost shed tears when he got an iPhone because he lost the physical blackberry keyboard he's had for like a decade) but he likes it a lot.
He got it so he could completely phase out his laptop (basically he needs to have the desktop environment so he can run his company's Citrix website which requires Java) and so far so good. He left his laptop at home on purpose one day and he said the only thing that he was unable to do is access files that were on the laptop's hard drive (he hasn't understood Skydrive yet, keeps trying to tell me it doesn't exist for Windows 7). He also doesn't get the concept of Metro apps vs Desktop.
In my point of view, if I have $1,200 to drop on it, I sure as hell will. It's basically as powerful as my laptop and has the same battery life. I love being able to go from flicking with my finger to tapping the screen, using the trackpad on the snap-in keyboard (you absolutely have to get that keyboard, the touch screen one slows you down), to using the pen that magnetically clips on the side. My biggest concern is the 90GB of space (with the 128GB model) but I'm pretty sure most of my disk space usage on my computer is from games that I don't even play.
I have yet to find a situation where the Surface Pro can't run an application well. That being said, the furthest it has been tested is Citrix remote desktop, watching trailers from the "Videos" app, and watching the "Back To The Future Part I" trailer via Flash on Internet Explorer in the Desktop app (I can't find a native Amazon Instant Video app on the store). It's a solid piece of machinery, I'm almost tempted to save up for one and ditch my laptop.
Here are my only complaints:
- You know that thing on the bottom right that you use your mouse to open? The charms bar or whatever? I have absolutely no clue how to make that show up without using the touchpad on the snap-in keyboard. I'm sure there's a way, I just wasn't there when he went through the tutorials showing you how. Until I figure it out, it's going to piss me off.
- I find the text-size on the Metro stuff on the tiny side (just a little bit). I'm positive there's a way to change it but it doesn't bother me that much.
- I cannot figure out how to do shit on the start screen (in regards to moving icons or the "right click" thing to bring up their options). Every time I hold the icon down to move it it does its little dance but doesn't do anything when I try to drag it. Can't get that little menu at the bottom up to save my life. Have to use the pen to drag them (works immediately) and then right click with the pen or the trackpad.
It's small stuff, and none of it would stop me from buying one

You can open the charms bar by dragging in from the right with your thumb. Alternatively, Win+C does the same.
You can change the DPI scaling by going to where you change the screen resolution. There's an option to scale text and such.
I haven't really used the touch devices, so I can't say much about the last thing.

This is a quite tricky one :v:
Hold it down until it starts to move downwards, then drag it up or down until it snaps out of place. Then you can move it around freely.
If you don't drag it that far, but still drag it down or up it will show the right click menu.

- I thought I tried that, but next time I see him I'll try again. Maybe I did it wrong or something
- Is this in "PC Settings" (found via the Charms bar :v:)

Thanks! Seems excessively complicated though, it should just work like the pen!
The launch of Windows 8.1 may not officially happen until October 18th, but today a new report claims that Microsoft's work on the RTM build of its latest OS is at last complete. The Russian website Microsoftportal.net reports that Microsoft has now signed off on the RTM build and it could be sent to its OEM partners in a matter of hours, if it hasn't been delivered already.
The website also reports that the final build number for the RTM version was 9600.16384. winblue_rtm. 130821-1623, which is what the version number was reported to be earlier this week. Microsoft has not officially made any statements about Windows 8.1 reaching the RTM stage, so take this latest report with a grain of salt. However, it would seem to be in line with Microsoft's own schedule of sending the RTM build to OEMs sometime in late August.
TechNet and MSDN subscribers may not be able to download the RTM build of Windows 8.1 ahead of the general launch date, as they have for previous versions of Windows. It's likely that Microsoft will continue to test Windows 8.1 between now and October 18th so that when the official launch happens, an automatic update will download some last minute bug fixes to the OS.
i hate to reboot my computer anymore because i'll get pass the windows blue loading screen and then i won't be able to login. it'll just be a black screen and i'll have to go into advanced options and do an automatic repair which will tell me it failed and then i can reboot and it'll show the login screen.
anyone know how to fix this besides refreshing/reinstalling? it started happening when i got my zowie ec1 evo, although that may just be a coincidence.

The Desktop is awful at scaling, but Metro scales beautifully. There's an option in the Ease of Access settings of the Metro settings app, and it works flawlessly.
I tried Windows 8.1 in VirtualBox and I really like the "under the hood" improvements they have done and various improvements to programs such as the task manager and the copying process but I really can't get into the whole metro layer, it feels so out of place and the workflow just feels too different from the non-metro interface. It covers up the entire screen making it impossible to follow along with guides and similar, something that was really easy in Windows 7 and previous versions, back then you'd just have two windows next to each other and there'd be no problem but now the closest you can get is to start up a separate web browser inside the metro interface and pin that to the side of the screen and then enter the metro menu.
I know the start menu can easily be changed using StartIsBack or Start8 but there's still so much other metro stuff going on in places like the control panel feeling out of place. I really hope they can somehow make it all blend together in future releases but for now it just feels like two different incompatible operating systems being slapped together.

Cool thanks. As for the desktop, can't you just decrease the resolution? That's what I did on my dad's Surface.
honestly I just don't see how can they ever merge them properly.
if metro apps run in the desktop, tablet users lose.
if desktop apps run in the metro, desktop users lose.
and with ms being so bent on making all kinds of devices have the same experience, I don't know what to suggest.
Is there a reason that both can't do both?
I imagine that would be a bit confusing.
I imagine that would be a bit confusing.
I would have absolutely no problem having my desktop have metro apps and a tablet with the desktop app. Hell, if I had $1,200 I would do it right now.
It actually pisses me off with how worthless iPads are for anything besides basic internet browsing and basic e-mailing. What's the point? These tablets (with Win8, not RT) can do anything my desktop can, so I can continue my work on the go. And with something like Dropbox or Skydrive, all of my files are synced across devices. I'm not sure where the confusion lies.
I don't understand what you mean by "basic" internet browsing and "basic" e-mail. The iPad web browser is pretty much the same as a desktop web browser. And as far as I know, the email app let's you do a certain level of formatting, but you can always download another one or use a web interface. And iPads can't do productivity really because the apps aren't there. There's no Adobe Photoshop for iPad. There is however Apple's official office suite, which does most of the things you need to do office wise

Well, there is Photoshop for iPad:

And it's about 80% of the desktop app in terms of functionality, but yeah, it's no desktop photoshop suite.
Tablets aren't good creation devices and tablet environments should be separate from desktop ones. What Windows 8 does is fine.
I wish Microsoft's apps didn't behave the same when they are snapped to the side to their smallest as when they are at their fullest size. It is aggravating to have Skype or Chrome snapped to the very side and not being able to navigate Mail properly or even be able to play solitaire at all. It is literally just an aspect ratio change, it's not like I'm losing content.

It's getting changed in 8.1. I see the motivation for making it like that in Windows 8, though, it just didn't really work in real-life.
I just wish Skype would work when I'm playing a fullscreen game. When I use Skype, and go into a game, it just stops working. It might be because when it goes out of focus, it mutes itself.

"Metro" Skype? Yeah, all "Metro" apps suspend when they go out of focus. That's why I still use "Skype for Desktop".
Cool thanks. As for the desktop, can't you just decrease the resolution? That's what I did on my dad's Surface.
That's even uglier.
But I suppose it works.
I bought half a new PC (reusing some parts) and thought now might be the best opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8 if I ever do. I have 3 monitors and an SSD so the better multimonitor support should definitely come in handy( and I think I heard something about SSD improvements too?).
I really, really, really dislike the duplicated UI though, how you have to switch between 2 UIs and two sets of programs and two sets of settings for different things. If I wanted multiple OSs running side-by-side I'd just start a VM.
Now my question are: Is it worth upgrading to Windows 8 in my case and which edition should I get and how much does it cost? Is it possible to completely remove Metro from Windows 8 and are the changes left worth the price of a license?
2 UIs, 2 sets of programs, 2 sets of settings?
