So how do i remove the start button?
Installed it on my Surface, and it kept my programs. I updated from normal Windows 8, though.
I'm trying to install from regular Windows 8 as well. When you asked how to upgrade did it just say "keep personal files only", but after it installed, your programs were still there? If not, I guess I should look some more.

No, it asked me what to keep - I chose keep everything. Are you using Windows 8 Pro?

I used Windows 8 Pro too. Which version of 8.1 are you trying to update too?
I had to follow this to make the keep everything option show up:

One last question, can I install it using Windows 8 native iso mount or should I burn it to a dvd?

I installed it just fine with just Windows 8 native iso mount.
On my windows 8.1 pro it says SecureBoot isn't configured correctly.
My brother-in-law found a refurbished Surface RT with Touch Cover for $200
I'm excited

This.

I'm not sure how much my two cents are worth to you guys, but as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't trust a Windows .ISO from any source that isn't direct from Microsoft itself, you never know what type of shit a third party would inject in there. Especially considering that it's going to be a free update in about a month.

Thats why you should compare the md5/sha256 hash before doing anything.

To what? We don't have hashes for the original ISOs because they were leaked in the first place. :v:

This is the most legit thing I found. http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-8-1-rtm-downloads-leaked/
But as mentioned there are no official hashes yet, or not that I'd be aware of.
Anyone know where I can get a cheap copy of Windows 8 Pro now? I know it used to be dirt cheap, but what about now?

If you have Windows 7 Pro or ultimate, the upgrade assistant till net you a Pro copy of Windows 8. Maybe Microsoft is going to lower the price of the 8.1 upgrade, though, to get more people to adopt? I doubt it though.

And by the way, Windows 8 marketshare jumped 2.4% on http://netmarketshare.com/
Windows 7 went up as well, and XP just plummeted. Anyone have an explanation? Maybe the recent fuss about XP's EoL? Or simply Netmarketshare doing something different?

Yeah I'm getting the same error.
-snip-, fucked up the quote
I've decided I want a Surface Pro but I wish Microsoft would hurry the fuck up already and announce the Pro 2 if there is going to be one, my course starts on Sept 30th.

If you're shooting for Pro, be wary of the battery life

You won't get a Pro 2 by then, mine starts on the 30th too and I'm not holding out. I mean look how long the Pro 1 took to be on sale here after being in the US for ages.
At least I have a ThinkPad x220T which has a serviceable touchscreen and digitizer.

Probably companies starting to move off of XP, I just got a new job helping a company do just that.

Well, it's dwarfs every other gain in market share accomplished by Windows 8 by 3, which is kind of dramatic.

Yeah, that was one of my concerns but I think that it'll work fine for me. I've heard you can push 5-6 hours on power saving mode, and that would be all I'd need to take notes in lectures. Any other times I'll have a power source near me.

I might get one this week then, was just a bit scared that there would be a Haswell model announced at the same price, or if that announcement would make the first Pro cheaper.

Haswell should, not double, but add at least 50% to the battery life if Surface Pro ends up being consistent with other laptops (and this is a bit conservative - though the 1080p panel probably takes its share of the battery).
So where can I get W8 Pro 64bit the cheapest?
nvm snippity snap
Hey guys. So I'm upgrading to 8.1. I have the option for "Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps", which is good. Except I don't give a shit about "apps"; does this option also keep my programs?
EDIT: Took the plunge. The answer is yes. It keeps everything: programs, desktop icons, even my saved session in Chrome. Woohoo.
