Reposting for a new page. Every time i go to shut down my computer it gets hanged up by Steam or something else. It says 'this app is prevent shutdown' How do i stop this? I use to be able to hit shutdown then walk away
Not much you can do except make sure those applications are closed when you shut down. Windows is simply waiting for them to close so it can proceed with the shut down process.

Well that sucks. Oh well i suppose its not that big of deal.
Well that sucks. Oh well i suppose its not that big of deal.
There was a registry key you could change to modify the timeout period for programs being open for waiting before shutdown. I'll find it and post back in a sec! [editline]17th September 2013[/editline] http://techdows.com/2010/07/how-to-force-windows-7-for-a-faster-shutdown.html Please be careful with your registry and backup. Don't set the time to low to give apps a chance to close.
I have a question: If I install Windows 8 now can I install the preview for 8.1 on top of that or is 8.1 a separate OS install?
I have a question: If I install Windows 8 now can I install the preview for 8.1 on top of that or is 8.1 a separate OS install?
Pretty sure ATM, it's separate; if the preview is still even going
Is there any way of downloading the music which the music app has uploaded to the cloud to my pc as a usable file, or does it always remain in the app?
So this Windows 8.1 I got from MSDN - this is the one that's going to let the computer update to the full version in a month, right? AKA it's RTM, and not the preview. It does not explicitly say preview in the title.
Where is the cheapest place to get a Windows 8 key right now? I have the DVD but I need to get another key.
Does anyone know of a good way to type special characters on Windows 8? On my Mac I can hold down alt/option and press a key (like option-s for ß) and it's fast, simple and convenient. I don't want to change my keyboard layout. What are the best options here?
http://ilyabirman.net/projects/typography-layout/ try this one
Where is the cheapest place to get a Windows 8 key right now? I have the DVD but I need to get another key.
Ebay. I got mine for $40. Also Newegg sometimes in a blue moon has it cheep.
Assuming you're using United States English, if you switch to United States English - International you can use right alt to make alternative characters like ©, ß, ®, etc. and it's still QWERTY. Edited: I don't know what the equivalent is if it is different from United States English but any English International should allow you to do exactly what you're asking Edited: [thumb]http://puu.sh/4tCoF.png[/thumb]
Precisely what I needed. Thank you very much.
Is there a way to upgrade more than one Windows 8 machine to 8.1 without having to use a 8.1 specific key, or is this a feature coming later on the release?
I decided to install windows 8 on my laptop, everything runs fucking better.
Is there a way to upgrade more than one Windows 8 machine to 8.1 without having to use a 8.1 specific key, or is this a feature coming later on the release?
What? I didn't think the keys were different?
What? I didn't think the keys were different?
You have to use a key to start the install of 8.1 RTM but when you're in Windows you can activate it with your normal 8 key
You have to use a key to start the install of 8.1 RTM but when you're in Windows you can activate it with your normal 8 key
oh okay, that's weird. also 8.1 runs pretty well on my ultrabook's shitty platter drive - only 10 seconds of boot time. on a 5400rpm deathstar
new surface tabs being shown monday
new surface tabs being shown monday
Supposedly at the same price points too. Surface RT 2 - dead on arrival.
My dad is looking for a tablet to bring with him on a vacation. He uses a Galaxy S3 for a phone, though he seems interested in the Surface RT. I'm leaning toward recommending a Nexus 7 purely because he could reuse apps on his phone, but can anyone defend the RT? I like the tablet interface on my Vaio Pro, though I still have desktop apps.

Microsoft's announcing new tablets today, and they might just have something worthwhile to show.
Is it normal for Windows Defender to freeze the file explorer for a few seconds upon right clicking on a file/folder? It's been bugging me since many months and I'm starting to lose patience now.
Are you sure it's Windows Defender and not some 3rd party application that added a context menu entry?
I've checked in in Task Manager and when I right click on something, Antimalware service executable suddenly becomes more active until the moment the freezing stops.
I really hope Facebook gets a move on with their Win8 App, I'm really missing getting FB message notifications in 8.1. It was nice not having to keep it open in a tab.
I tried to get 8.1 work on my lappy that was running 7 before... Literally 5 minutes after I got into 8.1 and opened explorer.exe, my screen turned off and the "Device Plugged In" sound played at full volume... I booted into Safe Mode after that and everything was fine, but it was Safe Mode. Google results told me to install the old Intel HD graphics driver whilst in Safe Mode, but now it would boot into a black screen right after the Windows 8 logo showed up. As well as that, I couldn't get back into Safe Mode. Could this be a BIOS issue? HP hasn't supplied an update for 8 at all, so I mean, it could be that?

Preordered my 256GB SSD/8GB RAM Surface Pro 2 today. Keen as fuck!

[editline]26th September 2013[/editline] Like, similar to all iPhone apps can run on an iPad, Windows Phone apps on a Windows RT tablet.
Are there even any RT only apps? That's a good way to not have any downloads at all.
