Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

when I get a new PC (high end, SDD purely for windows then rest of the shit on normal drive, gaming and shit like that) how much of an improvement will it be VS w7?
like, my new PC will be a MASSIVE upgrade for me, and no matter what be smoother W8 or not, but will I be better off with W7 or W8? I want to get the most out of my money.
I use 2 monitors as well, if that's relevant, will that also be very helpful compared to w7? I've seen classic windows style on one screen and metro on the other in some images.
Biggest thing I like about it is how simple it is and how much it looks way better. Definitely jumping into using high contrast mode though.

the most I hear of it is "it's just as good as W7, but not really an improvement" or the occasional "LOL wow what a fucking RETARD" douche.
if it's just as smooth, but VERY refreshing looks and feel wise I'll still get it no doubt.
Hot.
Are there even any RT only apps? That's a good way to not have any downloads at all.
No? There's no reason to think that. Windows RT is Windows 8 without the ability to run desktop applications. There's nothing special that RT brings to the table to allow apps that can't run on Metro.

I know. I wasn't asking for a description of the worst mobile OS of our time.
where can I find the windows 8 64 bit ISO? Needed to reinstall and I can't find it.

This is the Windows 8 thread - you'd probably have more luck asking the folks in the Windows Phone 8 thread.
How do I get a windows 8.1 style start button without the start menu?

i think start8 has an option for that
Just putting it out here that I'm selling my Surface Pro to facepunchers for 600 (I payed 1100 for that bitch); if anyone's interested just PM me.
Yeah right nows not going to be a great time for selling stuff over the forum

Why not just wait a few days until 8.1?
Or be a cool kid and install the RTM and get the start button today and still accept any updates pushed on the 17th!
So the windows 8 installation launcher wants me to uninstall two incompatible programs I can't uninstall.
Both Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software / Bluetooth are missing their .msi packages so I can't remove them.
It's like Microsoft doesn't want me to install Windows 8.

This is the part where a clean install should be considered.
Whelp, I installed the RTM GA Rollup A updates and now my graphics card insists on manual fan control and/or whatever fan speed it feels like regardless of temperature.
So just got a windows 8 touchscreen ultrabook not too long ago
I really like metro and prefer to use metro over desktop mode if I have the option
Sue me
can people with windows 8 get 8.1 for free now or is it still not out?
What's the preferred method for .iso mounting these days? Anything that replaced alcohol120/daemontools/poweriso?

Native ISO mounting in Windows 8.

To me it's still unavailable. Though I've read somewhere it will be released in 3 days.
The new start menu is pretty good compared to Windows 7.

For ISO I recommend the inbuilt tool in W8 while for other files like bin/cue and more I recommend virtual clonedrive.

Another great use for VCD is running disk-based games without the disks. I used to do that to run my copy of Morrowind off my hard drive, eliminated the loading screens entirely. Remember, though, piracy is bad, mmkay? I don't want to catch you kids using it for nefarious purposes.
Running a game you own without the disk falls under fair use. Running a game your friend owns without the disk is piracy and pleasedontbanme.
Looking forward to updating to Windows 8.1 Friday.
Whats even slated to go in for 8.1? I just bought an ultrabook would it already have it installed on it
No, it'll only have 8 on it. 8.1 brings better Modern UI stuff - half and half screen split, for example, the return of the start button, smaller tile sizes, more customization options.
It's free for those who own 8, though, since it's a "service pack".
Sort of. Except they don't do "service packs" anymore.
