Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

Can someone give me 4 legitimate reasons as to why someone should install windows 8 over windows 7?
(Trying to convince a friend it's totally worth it)

if you have to convince someone to use win8, you probably shouldn't bother.
Boots faster, lower resource usage, far superior task manager, better* multi-monitor support.
* Your results may vary

Boots faster, better task manager, better file explorer (even better in 8.1), better multi-screen support.
But like jung3o said, if he has to pay full price for Windows 8 (or a grudge against it), it's no point trying to convincing him.

If you're getting a good discount? Go for it.
Paying full price? I wouldn't bother.
Also, it boots faster.
Windows 8 is a nice upgrade, with a (arguably) better Start screen, file explorer (nice transfer dialogs as well), and overall faster performance, especially boot times. But it's not worth the full price (over 7 at least), unless you really, really, have money to spare.
I think that heatmap in the first post doesn't make any sense.
If the rectangles are larger and more spaced out it obviously takes longer to reach them.
So either the green region in the windows 8 heatmap should be a lot smaller or the green region in the windows 7 heatmap should be a lot larger.
The only way the current heatmaps would make sense if the speed of the cursor is increased as well.
And I don't think people want to change their cursor speed.
I other words: In the windows 8 heatmap the color should change towards red a LOT faster because there is a lot more distance between the tiles. (So the cursor has to travel a much greater distance)
Now matter how I look at it. I just don't get how scaling up the whole thing would make anything easier instead of harder. Isn't smaller distance = better??
If someone thinks otherwise please explain it for me :)
@Goz3rr: Could you explain why you think I'm mistaken? Don't be a dick and just rate me disagree without explaining :v:
Here's a better explanation of what I mean:

1. The red line.
How can the windows 8 line start with a better / greener colored square even though the distance to the cursor is LARGER than in the win7 screenshot??
2. The blue line.
Why is the "color change per distance" much smaller in the win8 screenshot.
If you would use a fair color gradient the result would be obviously in favor of win7.
Just imagine what would happen if you'd apply the win8 gradient to the win7 screen... Yes thats right, the whole menu would be green because everything is closer together and thus easier to reach.

Speed and accuracy are both factors, right now you're assuming it's equally easy to hit a tile and an element in the Windows 7 start menu, which is not the case.
I even put a very simple comparison in the OP: https://public.dm1.livefilestore.com/y1pbHyWlWOi0mSgCoqkiODnkyxm9JW267J1PVbtymY_jU9ZSJ6AvV6SfBsmaQa0xNI4R6JLrF5HnV6bTs08G6T6vg/6355.Page14-2_0CE4F0661.png?psid=1
Simply try to hit either box.

True, a valid point.
But I still think that it's a lot faster to aim a bit more precisely than to move the cursor a larger distance.
Well, we can argue all we want but in the end it's still a start-menu solely made for tablets.
Sure there are some enthusiasts but the meager 8% market share really speaks for itself.
If they really wanted to make it easier for the user to "hit" the rectangles they would have built something like the pokki launcher.
Windows 8 has some great new features, but the start menu is not one of them.
If they'd revert the start-menu completely to the windows 7 one I'd change to w8 in an instant.

I guess most people will say they find it easier to hit the square on the right and thats ok.
But personally it takes me longer to hit the right box. Simply because it's much farther away.

Get.
Out.
Seriously, we've dealt with enough of this half-assed shit. FOR THE PAST YEAR.
Regurgitating shit ad infinum does not make it true, and it does not make it valid. It just makes it heavily-digested shit.
Now get the hell out of here, you son of a bitch.

Real mature comment there. All those reasons really convinced me to like the w8 now.
Of course I'll also do as you say and leave at once.
Have a nice day sir. :v:

But it's not. Making it more touch friendly doesn't mean it's solely for touch devices as it still works fine with a mouse. The old start menu was barely functional with touch devices while the new start screen works fine with both.
Also the speed differences we're talking here are minimal. If you're THAT worried about how fast you can open stuff you shouldn't be using the mouse anyway (applies to both 7 and 8).

I don't think anyone here cares whether you like W8 or not. If you don't like the new start screen then you don't like, we can't change that. But when people go and start touting their opinions as facts is when it gets annoying. "Well it's only made for tablets anyway!!11"

Did you ever stop to think you're just used to the old Windows 7 menu compared to the new Windows 8 one
There is no "math" to which one is objectively better when the entire argument is subjective to begin with.
Was I wrong? Have we not had to deal with that idiotic, asinine argument since last October? Has it ever been more useless and less true than now?
Moreover, have we ever appreciated any of those "points" being raised here? I apologize for the vitriol, but the point stands.
Ever since Microsoft unveiled it. All people have done is cry.

calling him immature doesn't change the fact your argument is the most tired garbage about win8 and anybody who actually cares about functionality outside of bandwagon hatred moved on a year ago. it's just as functional as the old start menu if you're a power user who wants speed; hit start key, type the first three or so letters of a program, hit enter. I haven't actually relied on browsing the folder structure of the old menus for years and years, only occasionally to hunt down leftover bits after uninstalling something
for me it serves about the same functionality of desktop icons; bring the more used stuff up front and you've got a big fancy button to click. Maybe keep up an RSS feed or weather, that's pretty neat when you think about it.

Ok, you're right. I'm sorry.
I don't like it either when people present their opinions as facts.
I'll try to keep that in mind in the future.

I think you're right it's subjective.
I only tested it for a few minutes until I wanted the w7 menu back.
Do you think I could "learn" to like it if I just use it a bit longer? (a week?)

I've never done/tried that (opening stuff by using only the keyboard)
Still a good tip, I'll try it sometime.
Well, here's a heatmap of the start screen and start menu. Green takes longer to get to than red does.

Is it true that Windows 8.1 is coming out tomorrow?
Is it true that Windows 8.1 is coming out tomorrow?
Yep. Starting at 12:00am on October 18th in New Zealand (that’s 4:00am October 17th in Redmond).
From the bottom of the official blog post.
How long would it be a good idea to hold out on installing it from when it launches?
I still got from 8.1 RTM the Secureboot is not configured correctly watermark in bottom right.
What time is that in EST?
7AM?
Is Redmond in the same time zone as New York? If yes, then 8.1 would have been available in 3 hours.

No. New York is three hours ahead. 7 AM New York (EST) time. 5 hours and 48 minutes from the time of this post, regardless of time zone.

Then you need to go into the bios and find the option to install factory keys.
Also the Official Facebook App is out for 8.1 now.
Blurry text bug in 8.1 here. Any fix?
8.1 should now be live in the Windows Store for you non-MSDN plebs
