Downloading right now. Might update the OP with some of the new stuff, if the "edit" option decides to work today.
Holy shit, 3,62GB!? I expected it to weigh no more than 1GB.
Holy shit, 3,62GB!? I expected it to weigh no more than 1GB.
Standard fare Windows .iso size, really - it's the full installation, guess you could burn it to a DVD and install it on whatever.
I have windows 7 and want to upgrade to windows 8.1 now that it's fully released. If I download the RTM can I still update it to the final version that came out today, or does that not work?
Boots faster, lower resource usage, far superior task manager, better* multi-monitor support.
Windows Server 2012 is excellent, I assume they share the same qualities.
I just had a problem with a "Sentinel Runtime Driver" blocking the Windows Upgrade Assistant - it's apparently a remnant of a shitty lightworks uninstall, and the solution is to run this program with the argument -remove. Worked for me.
So this update doesnt erase anything does it?
So this update doesnt erase anything does it?
Shouldn't, at least - it gives you a list of incompatible programs first. Other than the hiccup described before, this is the most hassle-free installation of Windows I've ever done. Not totally done yet, though.
So when will 8.1 will be available as a free update to existing windows 8 users? Didn't see anything about in the posts above.. or is it available as soon as it releases overall?
So when will 8.1 will be available as a free update to existing windows 8 users? Didn't see anything about in the posts above.. or is it available as soon as it releases overall?
Its out now look in your store.
I installed the update from the store on my laptop (Vaio Pro 13), though I get this in the lower right: Since I want to dual boot with Linux, I need to have secureboot disabled. Has anyone been able to remove it cleanly?
Are there any official 8.1 pro Iso's? I'm having some driver issues with the upgrade and wanted to do a re format anyway.
Man;42552405']Are there any official 8.1 pro Iso's? I'm having some driver issues with the upgrade and wanted to do a re format anyway.
Can't seem to find any. Alternatively, format and install 8 and update to 8.1 from there. It's a detour, but that's that. Enjoying the changes in 8.1 so far, other than the removal of libraries from the side bar. I just put them under "Favourites", but still, unnecessary change in my opinion. Actually I just found a weird bug. Clicking the "Show desktop" button in the low right hand corner shows, well, the desktop, but clicking on it again [del]doesn't restore Chrome's window[/del], scratch that - it simply puts IE's window on top (wtf?). Anyone having the same experience? Fun Fact: the button's slightly smaller now as well.
Just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and wow so many new features!
Not entirely happy with Windows 8.1, the random tile colors are a strain on the eyes, can't find a way to set them back to just one background color. For the rest, it's working like I want it to.
The download speed of 8.1 is painfully slow. In over 2 hours it downloaded only 22% and I have a feeling I will have to let it download overnight.
The download speed of 8.1 is painfully slow. In over 2 hours it downloaded only 22% and I have a feeling I will have to let it download overnight.
That must be at your end, I downloaded it in less than an hour.
Just updated, pretty disappointed with the time it took just to install and setup.. Plus the setup was misleading, trying to force me to use a Windows Live account and seeming like it was going to require me to recreate my user account (although eventually it did say I could use an existing one). Edit: Oh and how lovely that all my services have been reset.
That must be at your end, I downloaded it in less than an hour.
I've measured the speed while downloading something via Steam, it indicated the speed of 500-600kb/s, while Windows store downloads with the speed of 30-100kb/s. My guess is that servers of Microsoft in Poland are just this horrible.
Also, is there a way to sign into a microsoft account but not require a password on startup?
I really dislike how the charm menu shifts it's position based on where your cursor enabled it. Is there a way to change it back to it's old form? Otherwise, 8.1 is wonderful.
I didn't mind Windows 8 when I first tried it, but some things greatly frustrated me. I enjoy many of the improvements, even the new start menu is nice, but I don't have any care for the metro apps of any sort. As it was when I tried it, a lot of old functionality, such as opening a picture in the "photo viewer" had changed to some metro app, meaning I got whisked away to Metro and had to wait for some overly flashy app to load. I just want a window to open and show me what I need. Does 8.1 have any sort of feature to help me out with this? Can I tell it never to open metro apps when I interact with things from the desktop?
Ugh.. I'm really really trying to like Metro. But when I double-click an .mp3 file, and it opens the full-screen Music app, loads for 5 seconds, and then tells me the Music app needs an update and it won't work without, that's when I give up.

Right click the file -> Open With -> Choose.... -> Check always use if it isn't already -> Choose Windows Photo Viewer (or whatever app you want to use). All the normal desktop apps are there, the metro apps are just set as default. Only bad thing is that you have to do this once for each file-type. You don't need to use Metro apps. They are just set to open with Metro apps by default. I personally don't use the Metro apps since I feel they are too limited for my use.
Then you need to go into the bios and find the option to install factory keys. Also the Official Facebook App is out for 8.1 now.
I'm getting the watermark on my laptop and it doesn't even support secure boot. It's plain UEFI and Windows still complains.
I just installed Windows 8.1 on my Intel Atom z2760 Tablet, and I'm getting massive slowdowns. Can anyone think of a solution? I lost internet connection while the update was downloading, but everything proceeded as normal when I reconnected?
so the Windows Metro Store app lists 8.1 as "preview", but clicking on it lists it as "pro", it's the real version right? Anyway to get an .ISO of it for future usage?

Pretty sure it's not the preview anyway though.
Are there any boot time improvements so far in 8.1?
so how does 8.1 handle start8 does it hide the icon that 8.1 made or what
