Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating
so how does 8.1 handle start8
does it hide the icon that 8.1 made or what
Once you finish installing 8.1 you should get a update for a new version of Start8, but even before I got that Start8 worked just fine and looked just the same.
I'm on windows 7 right now, if I wanted to install directly windows 8.1 without going first with 8 and then updating, what would I have to do?
Where can I find a .iso of the release 8.1, not the RTMs which lack some updates?
Then you need to go into the bios and find the option to install factory keys.
Also the Official Facebook App is out for 8.1 now.
idk how to get this to work.. I go to my bios enable windows 8 feature. go to install the keys and what not and when i try to boot i get a "non windows 8 logo graphics card. there is no GOP support detected in this card" then i get the options to restart which just puts me back in my bios or to just load default values and boot which is the only way im able to get back into windows..
I have a MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming motherboard with a MSI gtx 760 4GB card..
Any ideas anyone?
also how do i set it to boot into desktop automatically?
Is there anyway to change the lock screen text color?
apparently rainmeter's dlls got screwed up so you have to do the manual place dll into install folder
all better now
So probably my favorite feature is the ability to match my start screen bg with my desktop bg.
It makes it look so seamless to switch between the two, like pushing start just causes the tiles to overlay on the screen instead of it being a completely different menu. Super minor, but really good touch. I also love that to get to the apps menu I just swipe down instead of needing to long press.
I do hate the new search, maybe I'm not used to it yet. Bing still sucks at web searching what I need compared to google (and there is no way to change), and it no longer lets me search inside specific apps. I.E. I used to be able to type "pandora" and then tap the store icon in the search menu to the right and it would take me right to the results. Now, i can't do that - I have to be in the store app and search using the store search bar. Same thing with chrome/google/etc.
Also smaller tiles FTW and also how you interact with the start screen tiles. So much better, glad they changed it to work pretty much exactly like the superior windows phone 8 style of metro instead of the weird swipe-down thing (though I do miss down swiping for right click, its much faster than long-holding).

Oh and the multitasking for metro is now actually useful and SO much better. Wish we had the ability though to horizontally organize the windows instead of having to vertically organize them.
So I was playing around with powershell and noticed a windows.old folder on my C drive. I assume its okay to remove this?

Have you looked around in the registry? I wonder if it's possible to change the Bing connection to whatever Google uses for in-app searches?
Are we still able to make a Local account? because my dad doesn't want to use a Microsoft account.

Try something like localhost@localhost.localhost in the username (anything for password) and it should let you use/create one.

Looks like the option to make a local account is still there actually. It didn't even ask for a MS account during the install. Though that might have something to do with not having internet access until I log in.
Finally done downloading and installing, it took only 11 hours. And something tells me I will have to spend quite a lot of time on reconfiguring stuff.
This one is pretty easy to fix. Right click the file -> Open With -> Choose.... -> Check always use if it isn't already -> Choose Windows Photo Viewer (or whatever app you want to use). All the normal desktop apps are there, the metro apps are just set as default. Only bad thing is that you have to do this once for each file-type.
Also there is this (please excuse my terrible colors)(and program choices)

Weird, now my laptop won't boot sometimes. When I got to school it took three restarts before Windows started, the other times it would just go to black after the Vaio logo.
Looks to me like they borked the search function. I loved the 8.0 instantaneous search - but now it only does that for apps and programs, and files is back to being slow as ever. EDIT: Never mind, it still works quickly it just doesn't take the whole screen up anymore, which is still lame.

Also apparently I logged in with my Windows account instead of Local. I can change it though. Neat.
-snip-
Changing "My Computer" to "This PC" is bothering me more than it should.
Jesus christ how do I change tile icons and colors?
Whoever thought this orange was a good idea...

I've got a program for that, I've bundled a bunch of custom tiles too.

Malware detected, not sure if real or just due to registry changes.
There's definitely no malware.

Whoops, I guess that would have helped. I may end reformatting my laptop anyway since I want to install Xubuntu and Sony Vaio Control Center is fucked up for some reason.

what's the name of the program? Is it just oblytile?
Yeah, that's the one.
Still can't get this shit to appear in the Store.
Tried:
Clearing Store Cache
Installing all updates
Restarting numerous times
Changing Region
Getting sick and tired of Microsoft's shit

what is staged rollout for $300
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT. I don't need that stupid start button.
So 8.1's installer forces you to sign into an MS account, and I know later you can just disconnect the MS account but is there a way to simply not sign into it during the install? This is gonna make installing 8.1 on other people's PC's such a pain in the ass literally no one wants to do this.

Try putting this into your browser
ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade
It appears my stereoscopic 3-D got turned on after updating. Weird
