Has anyone found a solution for the "SecureBoot is not configured correctly" watermark in 8.1 yet?
Why can't I install the facebook app from windows store? Is it only for 8.1? [t]http://puu.sh/4XmfI.png[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/4XmhN.png[/t]

Both Windows RT and Windows 8.1 users can download this app.
So what's this shit about not being able to install the Windows 8.1 update if your Program Files folder is not on your C:\ drive? Does Microsoft not know about people like me who have a 64GB SSD and 2.5TB of storage hooked up to the PC that I would obviously prefer my application storage be on?

Or are you saying you don't have a program files folder on C at all? How do you even do that, I thought it was a regular ass folder and not a library.

I still have stuff like Visual Studio and Office installed on the SSD, but the default isn't C:\. I guess I could try changing it back but a part of me thinks it won't. It's still a stupid requirement anyway, just preserve the setting, dammit.

I've heard of changing the default location in the past, but I thought it was a registry hack. Doing stuff like that is never really a good idea if you don't want to run into issues later. Most software can be installed to wherever you want anyway.
It is a registry setting - that's why the registry exists, after all. Not much of a hack. (and you probably aren't surprised to know half of the applications out there ignore it anyway) I probably need to do a fresh install anyway but my flash drive is with my professor right now for a computer forensics project.

You can easily bork your system if you change stuff around in the registry. Just because the setting is there doesn't mean it's intended to be changed manually. If it was there would be a way to change it outside of the registry.
The Registry is a powerful tool. It's also dangerous. But it is meant to be used. Just use it with caution.

Yeah, you can fuck up a lot of low-level stuff, but I'm a fucking software developer, I know what not to change.

That's my point. Yeah, you can change stuff, but if you're not 100% sure of the possible side effects don't expect everything to work smoothly. Also being a software developer has nothing to do with this. Me being a professional java developer doesn't mean I know what every setting in the registry does and whether it's safe to change it or not.

That's why you don't change shit in the registry and expect everything to work properly.

I'm saying that's fucking stupid. It has nothing to do with the big bad registry.
My windows 8.1 just had a hiccup. When i started the pc it was stuck on Please Wait. But i fixed by doing a hard reboot.
Thats happen to me twice now. Weird.
Hm... Am I wrong in thinking that the Windows drive letters are dynamic, and can actually be changed with no ill effect through the disk utility? Because I'm pretty sure I've changed my C: drive to an F: drive and kept on chugging before.
does the surface pro 2 have cpu throttling issues? the original surface pro would frequently downlock itself to 1.2ghz on battery
well you should be able to change the letter whenever you want but it will probably fuck up paths for most programs and important software.
does the surface pro 2 have cpu throttling issues? the original surface pro would frequently downlock itself to 1.2ghz on battery
Anandtech wrote (afair) that it was running mostly at 2.3GHz, but it had no trouble hitting 2.6GHz. I don't think thermal throttling is too much of an issue, if at all, with the Surface Pro 2.
well you should be able to change the letter whenever you want but it will probably fuck up paths for most programs and important software.
Could you not change it back once you were finished? Also, this is why it's a bad idea to use non-standard drive assignments.
Alright, I'm pretty pissed off, since updating to 8.1, my search has been incredibly slow, I've noticed a drop in performance AND my activation is no longer valid, after spending hours with Microsoft Support, having to listen to their shitty hold music, just to be told that I should buy a new copy of 8.1, I figure that this update is just not worth the hassle. :(

Seriously, when customer support isn't helpful, you can always request to speak to a supervisor. It amazes me how many people don't know this is possible.

Yet they wont take my card so I couldn't pay even if I wanted to.... Good thing I don't need anything from the app store since MS doesn't like money apparently. Don't know if the US MS support is different but if its like the UK one it goes to a Indian call centre who are hopeless.

Keep asking until they put one on the line. It will work, trust me.
Update to 8.1 just fine on my laptop but it's been a nightmare on my desktop. It changed the language and the activation is no longer valid. Fuck this shit Is there any way to downgrade it? [editline].[/editline] Apparently I can't. Great, I formated my desktop last week and now I'll have to spend another weekend doing it all over again.
Decided to go ahead and download the 8.1 Update, the best thing was that my 8 Pro simply got upgraded to 8.1 Pro. :D
Windows 8.1 has made the Surface RT go from kind of unusable to actually really good. I've found myself using more apps for things rather than their sites, it's not really laggy like it was before (especially the music app, it was ridiculous before) and there's so much more functionality. Now I just need to get it to work on my PC.
One thing I hate about 8.1 is that it makes the "devices" panel useless since its now app specific and previous things that would work with it (streaming music to it from my phone) now are completely broken I also hate how the search is much worse now. I mean sure if you are just looking for a program on your computer it was fine but it was much better before when you could start typing, hit the "store" or "chrome" icon and immediately begin searching in in the store or chrome. It was also context sensative to where you were at which was great. Now it doesn't work like that at all, its just one generic search no matter what and the search results force you to scroll endlessly across HUGE bing search results that aren't actually good or what you want, before you get to the tiny area in the search results that show "results for store" or whatever I was actually looking for.

They should by all mean use the search hero thing when you're typing from the start screen or IE because I find it really useful and will find it even more useful when they expand it's featureset a bit more and make it able to access all sorts of things, but when you hit search in an app it should search that app.
