Windows 8 - "8" because cats were taken and dog races don't sound as intimidating

Having to upscale resolutions on a netbook is what keeps Windows 8 of being the perfect OS for my netbook. Damn.
There is a way to get Metro apps on low-res screens, this guy did it, but afaik he never released how exactly was it done.
Holy crap, my desktop window manager is aging. Never thought I'd see the day..
"The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason : Graphics subsystem resources are over-utilised.
Diagnosis : A consistent degradation in frame rate for the Desktop Window Manager was observed over a period of time."
Great, i just updated from windows update, and now i get a black screen. I can move the cursor but that's about it, black screen and i can move the mouse. I guess changing to windows 8 wasn't a good idea after all...
Quick question. I have a couple year old Laptop, it's an Asus, and on the site they only have Windows 7 drivers for it. BUT, could I install Windows 8 on it and would it still work fine? Could the Win 7 drivers be used on 8 as well, seeing how they aren't that far different?

Works fine on my Asus laptop with Win7 drivers on 8.
Except that the USB ports on one side don't always work on boot. (on my K53SV)
Ah, sweet. I have a K52N. Thanks.
Hey we got our Windows logo on our posts finally!
it only took like 6 months or so

I'm using a Windows Vista audio driver in compatibility mode and works better than the one that comes with Windows 8 & 7.
whoa we finally got a W8 post icon for Facepunch, nice.
It needs to be blue. What the fuck, Garry?
eh it's fine
you can change the color in the OS so I think a neutral color like this is ok

The official logo is baby blue, though.

Probably hard to see as new posts have that blueish colour.
I am thinking of getting this, and have it on a 80GB SSD. Is this possible? As in I only have the OS on the SSD and then have the rest of my stuff on my 2TB hard drive.

It's very much possible, but if you want to have Steam games on the SSD, you'll want to familiarize yourself with mklink /j.

Didn't they add a function thingy when you downloaded a game you could decide where you wanted it downloaded to?

I heard something about it, but I haven't seen the feature yet.

I've seen it, was gonna get you a screenie but it seems it might be a beta feature.

If MS do end up naming future updates after colours, it'd be sweet if the little icon changed colour with them.
Speaking of which, I really hope they adopt that approach. Windows 8 has so much potential, I hope they don't start nearly from scratch again and give it a steady upgrade cycle like OSX where each update adds a whole load of super awesome features. Especially since Windows 8 is a big change they should move away from the numbering system so people don't expect as big a change each time.

It's really easy to sign up to the beta, though, isn't it? You've just gotta twiddle around with the settings for a bit.
It's a really great feature. I have Steam installed on a 128GB SSD. Loading screens are my bitch. But it was pretty much full. Any game I can deal with long loading screens on I just shove it on my 1TB external.

Eh, Firefox didn't give a shit. It went up whole numbers when they changed the littlest things. I remember a year or 2 ago, we were on Firefox 3. Now we're nearly on 20 http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/

Yeah but Windows has never been like that. Each version is usually a pretty big update. I'd feel weird using Windows 9 and it was basically just Windows 8 with a few more features.
Plus it would imply it was going to be full price which it'd damn well better not be.

On laptops it's black just like this though.
I got a new laptop with Win8 for Christmas. I really like the start menu (once I reorganized it), and how fast everything boots.
I absolutely HATE some of the Windows Integrated apps. Things like Adobe PDF reader and even Windows' own media player were essentially standards of PCs past but Microsoft felt the need to turn away from that with horribly integrated apps.
The default PDF reader is awful, doesn't really let you do anything and takes up the entire screen. The default media player is the same. Before, I could just install something and boom everything works with that. Now, everything seems to default to Windows.

Adobe Reader doesn't come with Windows. Just download it, use it instead. And WMP is still there, just change the file associations.

Just take the time to change the file associations. Its not set in stone, its just the default.
